"Mr. Deb you're up early, how's your neck pain".
"Much better thanks to you and yes I am up early I have a meeting to get to".
"What Mr. Deb you should have told me about it, I would have prepared your breakfast, get your clothes and briefcase out andâŚ"
"Ganga relax, its okay, I can do these things on my own".
"Okay but let me get your breakfast ready atleast".
"Okay".
The truth was there was no meeting it was a lie, he needed to get away from ganga for a while, and after the dream he just had he wanted to bolt out of the room without any small talk.
As Aparajit came downstairs he saw his mother and ganga making preparations for something.
"Maa, good morning".
"Good morning beta".
"Whats all this are we having a party this evening"?
"No we are having a pooja".
"Pooja for what".
"Jeet today is Karva Chauth, and come home early its not right your wife will be fasting for you and you come home late".
"Of course maa, I would never do that to ganga".
"Jeet your breakfast is on the table and I have kept juice instead of tea, is that okay"?
"Haan than(catches himself)âŚYour such a sweetheart ganga always taking care of my needs, thanks jaan".
Ganga stands still and shocked, of course they acted fake and in love in front of maa but this was the first time he used words and not actions(hugging from the side, occasional kiss on the forehead).
"Umm no problem".
Maa was very pleased with the change of attitude from her jeet now she needed ganga to come out of her shell.
Jeet was about to take a bite out of his breakfast, but puts the fork down, he didn't feel right leaving ganga to starve herself for him, and him filling his stomach throughout the day. He decided he would fast too.
"What's wrong beta, eat your breakfast or you'll be late".
"No maa, I will not eat at all today".
"are you feeling okay".
"im feeling fine, I just feel guilty, ganga will be here at home starving, I will fast too".
"I am so proud of you beta, finally you both are coming close".
"maa please don't tell ganga about this, she will not like it".
"okay it will be our secret".
"thanks maa, okay I must leave".
Later that evening Jeet was 5 hours late, ganga began to worry and maa had to keep her calm.
"maa he is still not back yet, what if something happened, we should call the police, he's never late when he promises to come home early".
"ganga beta calm down, I'll try his cell again okay"
"I tried 15 times now maa", ganga begins to cry and maa just holds her.
"Maa I am so sorry there was an accident andâŚ", aparajit sees ganga's tear-stained face and walks over to her.
"Ganga are you okay".
THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASH
Aparajit felt a stinging sensation on his right cheek, and in front of him stood a very upset ganga.
"AM I OKAY, AM I OKAY, THAT'S WHAT YOU ASK ME AFTER MISSING FOR 5 HOURS, NO IM NOT OKAY, DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH MY HEAD, I THOUGHT SOMETHING HORRIBLE MUST HAVE HAPPENED, I WAS ABOUT TO CALL THE POLICE".
"Gang im sorry IâŚ".
"SORRY YOU'RE SORRY, NO MR. DEB IM SORRY, YOU CLEARLY DON'T CARE ABOUT OTHER PEOPLES FEELINGS SO WHY SHOULD I, RIGHT".
Maa speaks up, "bahu enough, jeet is sorry na beta".
"NO MAA, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, I CANT BELIEVE I FASTED FOR THE LONG LIFE OF THIS SELFISH MAN", with that ganga turns around and runs up the stairs to her room.
"Maa I hurt ganga very badly, I know I should have called but I thought I'd explain when I get home, plus I didn't think.."
"..she would care", said maa completing jeet's sentence.
"beta she loves you so dearly, of course she would care".
Aparajit looks at his mother and thinks no maa she doesn't love me, she just cares for me and I care for her very deeply.
"umm maa i should go apologize and explain why I was late".
"of course and while you do that also, break yours and her fast", maa hands aparajit a thali and glass of water.
"I will send up a plate of food for both of you".
Aparajit goes into his room and looks for ganga and worries because he doesn't see her there. Then from his window he sees the moon. Of course shes probably on the terrace. He was right when he opened the door to the terrace he sees his pretty wife staring off into space gazing at the moon as the wind blew through her silky hair.
Ahem " Ganga im very sorry for the worry I put you through please accept my apology".
No words came out from ganga.
"Ganga I was late because I went to the mall, and from there I went to mandir".
"mall, mandir but why and mandir you never believed in god", replies ganga.
"I know but you do, and I went to the mall to get you this", he handed her a silver wrapped box.
"what is this for"?
"woh maa said since it is karva chouth I should get you a present".
"Mr. Deb I am sorry I slapped you I had no right to, im very sorry please forgive me".
"ganga please just forget about it, its fine I might have deserved it, no I did deserve it".
Ganga opened the present and found a lavender and blue sari with matching jewelery and bindi, "it's beautiful mr. deb, but why did you go to mandir"?
"for this", he pulls out a red and gold piece of string, "its said if this thread is tied around the sacred tree then the relationship of a husband and wife is kept strong".
Ganga begins to tear up and is about to say something butâŚ
"I overheard one of the workers talking about it, I thought by going and bringing this home, maa's doubt about us would be gone for good", says aparajit.
Ganga's hopes are once again destroyed, maybe her husband would never want or desire her, maybe she was also not destined to get her love.
"Ganga we should break our fast now".
Ganga snaps out of it "Yes of course, wait mr. deb did you say our".
"Um uh actually I.."
"Yes beta he wanted to keep it a secret but I must tell you, jeet has not eaten anything since morning, he felt bad seeing you starve yourself so he decided to fast as well", maa kept their plate on the table and left.
Ganga starts to cry again "Mr. deb im an awful friend, I slapped you and yelled at you and here you haven't eaten anything since morning for my sake so I don't feel bad".
"Ganga please stop crying".
The wind begins to kick up and the lights go out, but the luminescence of the candles gives a romantic atmosphere. Ganga runs inside to her room and cries profusely. Jeet enters with the food and sets it down.
"Ganga don't feel bad on my account, we are friends right".
Ganga turns around and embraces her husband. Jeet is confused whether or not he should hold her, he didn't want to lose control and take advantage of a vulnerable girl. He couldnt help it so he lightly embraces her and begins to carress her milky white skin and he brings his hands to her waist and gently skims his fingers across her flesh. He realizes the position he is in so he gently pulled her off of him and gazed into her eyes and wipes the tears that were falling.
"Ganga lets put this behind us and become friends again please".
Ganga nods and smiles.
"Thank God you finally smiled, now lets eat please, I feel like there is nothing but air in my stomach".
Ganga laughs, "Okay lets eat".
While chatting and eating Jeet mentions how there is a problem with their factory in Mumbai and how he must go for a couple of weeks to fix the problem. Ganga thinks this is her chance, she must go with Mr. Deb to India, it's time.
