Chapter 6

Bani stood stunned at what Rano just said. Ranveer was on his way here?? And with his family?? So many things were going through her mind! She was feeling a myriad of feelings all at the same time; shock at the fact that all this was happening so fast, excited because Ranveer was sincere about his relationship with Rano, anxious at what his family would say about them and their being middle class.

Bani: Kya?! Ab kya hoga?? Hum ko bilkul tayyar nahin hain. Aur papa, wo to abhi bhi so rahe hain! Kya karoon main… pehle ghar saaf karoon. Nahin.. Nahin pehle mein tumme tayyar karti hoon. Hain.. Chal to Rano jaldi se nahle aur ek achi si sari pehen lena.

Rano watched as she saw her Di getting all panicky. She couldn't help but giggle at the how adorable she looked all worried. Walking to her, she took Bani by her arms and led her towards her bed and sat her down.

Rano: Di, relax. Sab kuch thik hoga. Ranveer sir bohot ache hain aur inke parivaar wale bhi. I've met them a couple of times and they are very nice folks, sach Di. Di kya apne papa se baat ki hain?

Bani: Thik hain Rano, bas thodi si chinta ho rahi thi isiliye. Tum fikar mat karo papa ki.. Kaal raat maine baat karli thi before I went to bed. Kaal raat unnone sharab nahin pi thi.. Aur meri baat maan li thi. Wo sirf tumari khushi chahte hain. Ab jaldi karo! Mujhe bohot kaam hain. Jaoo na!

Rano smiled softly at her Di and taking her things, she went towards the bathroom to shower.

Meanwhile, Bani went to wake her father up and told him about Ranveer coming over. He was more than glad that there were coming over for Rano. He wanted nothing more than his daughter's happiness. Tears threatened to spill as he remembered his wife and how he took the support of alcohol after she passed away. He felt useless that he didn't do anything but drink and drink. Instead his daughters had to manage everything. Bani glanced towards her father and saw his eyes moist.

Bani: Kya huwa papa? Aap thik hain na?

Nishikant: Mujhe maaf kardo Bani. Mein bohot bura pita hoon. After your mother left, I did nothing but drink. You and Rano had to take up jobs to keep the house running. I am useless, Bani, useless..

Bani: Nahin papa. Aap bure nahin hain. Humne apko kabhi doshi nahin mana papa… aap hamesha hamare pyaare papa rahenge.. Hamesha. Having said that, she hugged her father.

Nishikant was touched at her words. After a while, he wiped his tears away and went to freshen up. Within the next 15 minutes, Bani made breakfast and also some snacks for their guests. She cleaned up the house which was now looking tidier. Impressed at her work, she went to freshen up and changed her clothes. She wore a pink and white salwar kameez and a matching pair of pink dangling earrings. Combing her hair, she tied it in a bun. Applying kohl and lip gloss, she went over to Rano's room who was standing at the window, dressed up in a blue and white sari. Her younger sister was about to get married to the love of her life. She prayed that all goes well today.

Bani: Rano, tum wahan kyun khadi ho?

Rani turned upon hearing her Di's voice: Nahin kuch nahin. Bas aise hi.

Bani knew she was feeling nervous. She walked over to her and gently took her into a hug. That warm hug said everything. Just then, the doorbell rang. Both sisters jumped apart. Telling Rano to stay in the room, Bani went to her fathers room who was heading out to open the door. Greeting their guests, Nishikant led them towards their living room and sat them down. " Ayye ayye batheye."

Aditya Bali: Shukriya. Main Ranveer ka pita hoon, yeh Jigyasa meri patni, aur yeh Uday Walia Jigyasa ke bade bhai aur unki patni, Krishna Walia.

Nishikant, folded his hands and greeted everyone: Namaste, Namaste. Mein Nishikant Dixit hoon, Rano ke pita. Aapko yahan aane me takleef to nahin hui...

Aditya: Nahin bilkul nahin. Kaise baat kar rahe hain. Apko ajeeb lagraha hoga ki hum kitne jaldi aye hain.. Lekin kya karein.. Hamare Ranveer ko bohot zyaada jaldi hain!

Everyone laughed as Ranveer blushed. True he was impatient but that wasn't to be told to anyone, especially Rano's father! After he left yesterday, he had immediately gone to his father and explained everything; how he fell in love with Rano and that he wishes to marry her and that he had already asked Rano's sister who had accepted. Aditya was very pleased and was surprised too. He had met Rano a couple of times and she was a lovely girl. Ranveer was shocked when his Dad had told him that they would go to Rano's house to ask her hand in marriage the next day and was more than happy at that!

Nishikant called Bani and introduced her to everyone: Yeh meri badi beti hain, Bani. Isne hi yeh ghar sambhala hain. Apni khushi se pehle dusro ki khushi ke bare mein sochti hain. Bani shyly greeted everyone with a Namaste and smiled at them. Krishna noticed Bani, she was a beautiful girl. There was something about her that seemed special… just then a thought striked her. She broke out of her thoughts as she heard Nishikant speak, Zara Rano ko le aana. Ji papa.

Bani went to Rano's room and soon came out with Rano who was looking down all shy as well as nervous. Rano first went to take the aahirwad of the elders and then sat down, Bani too sat beside her and held her hand in assurance. Ranveer meanwhile was watching her with his mouth wide open. She was looking gorgeous in a sari! Krishna Walia saw that, smiling inwardly she whispered to him, " Ranveer beta, mu to ban rak varna kya sochenge yeh log? Ranveer immediately closed his mouth and looked elsewhere.

Uday Walia: Hamein to yeh rishta manzoor hain. Ranveer ne hamein sab kuch bata diya hain. Hamein Rano jaise sanskari aur pyaari si ladki hi chahye thi Ranveer ke liye. Ap kya kehte hain Nishikant ji?

Nishikant looked at his daughter who was smiling and looking down at her hands: Hamein bhi yeh rishta manzoor hain. Lekin… dahej.. Hum middle class hain aur isiliye…

Uday Walia: Aap yeh kaise baat kar rahein hain? Hum in sab mein vishwas nahin karte. Humein to sirf apki beti chahiye hamare ghar ke hone wali bahu.

Nishikant was touched at what they said. He was grateful towards them for having accepted his daughter despite being middle class. "Hamein maaf kijye. Apse yeh sunkar bohot achha laga. Hamein khushi hain ki hamari Rano ko aap jaisa parivaar mila hain. Bohot khush hoonmain."

Uday Walia: Hum aab chalte hain. Hamein hamare punditji ko bhi bulana hain, shaadi ka date fix karne ke liye. Jigyasa, zara yeh shagun tum Rano ko do. Jigyasa stood up, she wasn't liking the idea of having a middle class girl as her bahu, but her son's happiness came first. She walked over to Rano and presented the shagun to her, a pair of intricately designed gold bangles. Rano bent down and took her blessings. Aditya walked over to Rano and affectionately caressed her head. "Jeeti raho, hamein khushi hain ki Ranveer to tum jaise jeevan sathi mila hain. Aajse tum hamari amanat ho." Rano had tears in her eyes. She was so happy that she had no words to say. "Hum ab chalte hain."

Nishikant walked them to their cars. When he returned, he saw his daughters crying. He walked over to them and took both of them in a hug. In a few days time, Rano would be at her sasural.

~ On the way back to Walia Mansion in their car

Krishna: Suniye, mujhe aapse kuch kehna tha.

Uday: Haan kya baat hain?

Krishna: Bani hamare Jai keliye kaisi rahengi?
