Chapter 6
Bani pretty much left Jai alone the next few weeks, attending to him only when he needed medication or when he needed stuff that he couldn't do himself. Jai was recovering pretty well and the doctors had finally given him the green signal on doing whatever he wished. Some medicines he still needed but otherwise he was pretty much back to normal. This was the first week he had started driving and going back to the office.
Getting back behind the wheel was not as easy as it seemed, not remembering how he was involved in the accident but he had managed to get over the ordeal and was driving again. His new BMW was equipped with all the necessary luxury to ensure safety and Jai loved it.
Things were slowly coming back to him but very vague thoughts. If he concentrated too much it left him with really bad headaches which took few hours to finally disappear so Jai didn't stress to much on it.
One thing that kept bothering Jai was Bani? He wasn't able to figure her out. She was always so distant towards him. Talking to him only when spoken to or when she wanted to give him medication or tell him dinner or breakfast was ready. This was eating him up. Why was she hostile towards him? What was it that triggered so much distance between them? Every time he tried getting close to her, she shut herself up from him. Every time he questioned her, she changed the subject, akhir kiu? Dadi had left for home this morning, what now, Bani easily used Dadi as a weapon whenever he approached her, but what would she do now? She was his wife, he could demand an explanation for her actions right? That was his marital right, as a husband he was allowed to be concerned about his wife, her feelings, her whereabouts, her thoughts. Everything!
Work was the one thing that kept him busy these days but the growing tension between him and Bani was electrifying. Everything seemed so normal around him, his wounds had healed but his empty feeling in his heart was wrenching. The thoughts that came day in and day out, what was the mystery behind his and Bani's relationship?
Looking at the time, 3pm! That was it, he was going to call it a day and today he was going to find out exactly what happened. He couldn't handle this anymore!
Bani on the other hand felt the total opposite, living a life where she didn't have anybody to talk to. Friends were long gone; her one sister had her own share of problems to deal with. Everything was so much on pretence. Why could Jai be the husband whom she could tell all this too? Why could he be her friend who she could share all her problems with? Why did he treat her like that? When would he get his memory and tell her why he did all that to her. After all she has done for him, he should at the least tell her the reason he hated her so much, the reason he used her like a rag and than threw her out!
Bani sat on the stairs deep in thought. Each day was becoming hard to handle and she couldn't live anymore thinking what if Jai remembered all today. Same old thing every day. Sleeping with the same thought and waking up with the same thoughts. Why is Jai so nice now, that isn't the man he is supposed to be? Caring for her, making sure she was okay, considerate to her feelings. It was too much for her to handle and it was biting her inside. All this was making it so hard for Bani to keep her distance from him, to not go into his arms, to not turn at night and embrace him into a hug, to not cuddle him close to herself. It was so difficult. Couldn't it be possible that Jai would never remember the past and she would never find out why he treated her like that. So that they can continue living the way they were, to start afresh. He was after all the first man she had ever loved, still loves!
Closing her head over her knees that were folded to her, Bani wanted to scream. Why was it this way with her? Things were going so perfect for her why Jai had to come in her life, why didn't she learn a lesson to not trust love when Rano didi suffered. Only If she could go back to that concert night and say no instead of the yes she did, she would have been a successful business associate right now living her life. All her dreams had changed once she had met Jai, everything had become from hers to his. Everything in her life had started from him and ended with him. She was so madly in love that she forgot to see reality of life. A man of such caliber would never be interested in a girl as herself. He had gone out of his way to impress her, doing everything in his power to get her attention, all for what? Those flowers, those meetings, those dates! What am I going to do?
Jai left his office heading towards the busy traffic of the city; today he was going to clear everything. He needed to know what was the truth, why did Bani keep her distance, if she was his wife, why weren't they leaving like husband and wife, why was there so much tension between them. He had to know.
Turning the radio on; he almost changed the station when he heard the song playing…

It was such a beautiful song. He was never into poetry or romantic things but these days everything appealed to him. The reason Bani and her actions were bothering him so much was every day he failed to realize how much more he was in love with her. He didn't know what circumstances they got married in or the situation that led them to be so distant with each other, one thing he knew is he was glad with the fact that she was his wife and he wanted her to be his wife in every way. And not only because he wished it but because she wanted it as well, today he was going to find out what exactly is happening!
The shrill of the phone ring got Bani out of her dilemma that she almost got her foot tangled around her dupatta and almost fell on the stairs. Luckly she was able to control her balance and made it to the phone.
Bani: hello?
Rano: Bani? Came Rano's weak and tired voice, almost sobbing to limits!
Bani: Rano Di? "Kya hua?" "what happened?" "why are you crying?"
Rano: Bani, oh Bani, crying more, Varun, Varun
Bani almost panicking didnt have to ask anymore, "didi saaf saaf kaho kya hua?"
Rano: Bani, Varun, raath bhar?
Bani wanted to hold her sister as she continuously chew up words and cried. "didi if you don't stop crying, how will I know what's wrong, and how will I help you?"
Rano: breathing hard, "Varun," paushing "raath bhar" pausing further "oh Bani" doctors ne kaha ki operate karna padega, "
Bani: why? Hua kya hai?
Rano: his conditioned has worsened and the incubator isn't helping much anymore with his breathing, talking rapidly without stopping
Bani: hold on didi, where are you?
Rano: Bani I gotta go, he needs me, do something Bani mera Varun, his all I have
Bani: didi, where…hello? Hello? Looking at the phone and than shouting again, hello? Didi?
Jai had come in the house at that instance and hearing Bani shout, ran towards her holding her "Bani?" "kya hua Bani?" "Why are you crying and shouting?" "What happened?" shaking her
Bani: Varun, Jai, Varun, nanha sa Varun, Bani held onto his shoulders the phone dropping from her hands, holding Jai really tight. "Varun?"
Jai held her making her look at him, worried at her condition, he had not once seen Bani cry like this and oh God he would do anything to fix whatever it is. "Bani, honey whats wrong?" "will you tell me?" "who is Varun?"
Bani crying looked at Jai, "Varun, hamara nanha sa Varun, his in critical condition," the doctors need to operate, crying she hugged Jai, holding him. Jai held her so tight, felt like so many years since he had her in his arms like this"who is Varun." Still holding her, "Bani, shsshhh, what happened?" "Where is Varun?"
Bani: crying more, all the emotions finally flowing, everything taking its toll and Bani not able to suppress it anymore. "oh Jai," "didi ne kaha agar operation nahi hoga toh phir Varun!"
Jai: aaah Varun is her sisters somebody, "which sister?" Jai looked more confused, but first things first. "where are they BAni?" Bani still mubling in-between sobs, "I don't know, didi ne call kiya par she was crying so bad and didn't tell me anything." "okay shsshhh, quiet down," "quiet down Bani, this is not good for you." holding her he picked up the phone and dialed Aditya "ha ADitya, patah karo the last call to the house where was it from?" "Its very urgent!"
Jai lifted Bani in his arms and carried her to the bed, "I will take care of this, tum araam karo Bani" "lekin Jai, Varun?" "Varun ki chinta math karo, I will take care of this, you rest!" Pulling the sheets and trying to calm her it was after half an hour before Jai finally got her to sleep, she looked so drained and tried. His cell buzzed!
"ha Aditya" …what?...okay give me the number. Jai went to his study, pulling open his laptop, okay London, which hospital was it. Picking up his cell phone!
Jai: yes my name is Jai Walia and I am calling for a Mr Varun admitted at your hospital. "Yes sir" came the reply from the other end….!
Jai sat stunned after finishing up with the call and making all the arrangements. Why would Bani keep such a thing from him? Her sister's son was suffering from a very severe condition which has been needing surgery since he was born and she was in a position to help. God she was his wife, she shouldn't be financially worrying about these things than why hasn't she. He had gone ahead and made all arrangements to get everything started ASAP and had even given instructions to get the best treatment out there. Taking whole responsibility of any cost involved. It's the least he could do for his wife. But why has Bani kept such a thing away from him. He wasn't able to talk to the sister as she was with the baby, but as soon things are stable he wants Bani to go see for herself on the progress of the recovery. Why would Bani keep such a thing from him! He had to meet this sister to sort out what is going on. Maybe she can shed some light to this unusual relationship they have. But the main concern was Varun and he was going to make sure things go well for the 16 months old baby
Jai entered their bedroom to find Bani deep in sleep. She hadn't slept well for a long time, closing the door behind him entering his study he sat infront of his laptop and opened explorer. He hated the media and hated everything they had to say but today he was going to glimpse in what they had to offer about him and Bani and try and figure out what all is happening out there. With a man as himself there should be something. As it is the media hadn't left him alone when he was involved in that accident and all the updates.
Google, search, he sat thinking, than he typed "Bani Walia"
