Light of Loneliness
Part 1:
"Throw her in with the others" said a man with a raspy voice. The next thing she knew, she was thrown onto the floor. The mud felt soft against her skin. She was too tired and exhausted to get up and look around to see where she was. She just lay there, hearing voices surround her, too exhausted to even think of what she was going to do. That was all she remembered before sleep pervaded her and threw her into oblivion.
Bani woke up to the sound of voices around her, some crying and consoling each other, and others talking in hushed voices. She couldn't remember where she was and then it just hit her, as reality dawned upon her. She remembered everything that had happened. The harshness of the world dawned upon her and she started crying. She couldn't believe that this had happened to her. She was just walking home from her school, Mavers High School, where she happened to be a senior, when someone came from behind her and threw her into a van. They tied her up and all she could hear were voices talking about how much money they would get for bringing in fresh meat.
All of a sudden, the door burst open and two men came in and forced her and some other women into the back of a van. They locked the door and both sat in the driver and passenger seat. Bani looked around and saw 3 other women who seemed to be older than her. One of them was consoling the other while she cried in her lap. Bani couldn't fathom what was happening. Where was she going? Would she ever see her family again? All those questions flew threw her mind at warp speed.
The car halted to a stop and all 4 women just stared at each other, not knowing what to do. The door flew open and both men forced all the women inside a building. It looked like a club, but Bani couldn't be too sure, since they came in from the back entrance. The men threw some clothes at them and told them to get changed. Bani just did as she was told, knowing that if she didn't, they would probably do treacherous things to her. These people didn't care about her feelings, they just wanted money, and if Bani wanted to get out of this place, she would have to oblige, or else, she thought horrifically, die trying to protest.
Bani knew what these people wanted from her, and she knew that if her parents ever found out, they would be shamed for life, but what else was she supposed to do? Let them hurt her? When the time came, the door opened, the men forced the women out once again, and took them into a room full of men. They were told to start dancing or else face the consequences. She saw two of the women start to dance, fearing the wrath of the two men. She followed their lead, all the while crying, knowing that what she was doing was wrong.
The men all around her started whistling and clapping, throwing money at her. Bani felt so ashamed, she just closed her eyes, wishing it would all just end.
When it was over, all the women were put in a room. "Go to sleep. We don't want you to be tired for tomorrow" the man with the raspy voice said with an evil laugh. Sleep was something that wouldn't come so easily to Bani. She was too ashamed of what she had done to go to sleep peacefully. It seemed like that for all the women around her.
"Hi, I'm Puja," said the woman sitting next to her dejectedly. "Oh, I'm Bani" she replied with a weak smile. "I was brought here a week ago. You're probably new here right? I can tell because I haven't seen you before" she said and continued "I know, you're ashamed of what you did, as are all of us here, but you have to know that you really didn't have a choice. When I was first brought here, I tried to stay put. I didn't want to go against my parent's teachings. But all that got me was the bruises all over my body" she finished sympathetically. That night, Bani cried herself to sleep, thinking of all the horrible things that were happening in her life right at that moment.
