Part 6
The next 24 hours were the toughest in Jai's life. The nurses asked him if there is anyone they call for Bani, but Jai couldn't think of anyone except one person, Rano. He dialed the number himself, "Rano, is Ranveer there?" Jai didn't want Rano to worry in her condition as much but he knew that Bani would want her here.
Ranveer listened quietly to Jai and tried to think about how he was going to tell Rano about this. "Rano, we need to talk."
"What is it honey? Wait, don't tell me, you are leaving me for another girl?"
"What?" Ranveer wondered where that came from…
"Calm down, why are you so serious? I was just joking." Rano kept a hand on her stomach as she tried to sit down.
"There has been an accident and Bani is hurt and undergoing surgery, and Jai thought it would be best if you were there when she wakes up." Ranveer said everything in one breath hoping to lower the hurt but it didn't work.
"But she is okay… right? Tell me she is okay!" Rano had never had a better friend in her life then Bani.
"We should go see her." Ranveer got Rano up and grabbed the keys and his wallet.
The two of them came to the hospital and Rano saw Jai pacing back and forth. For a slight second, Rano felt that everything would be all right, Bani would have to come back because people were here for her, waiting. She wasn't surprised that Bani's dad wasn't around, he never really was. She walked over to Jai and put her hand on his shoulder. Jai turned around and gave her a quick hug making sure not to hurt her in any way.
"Rano, she will be okay, right?" Jai needed reassurance if nothing else at this time.
"Of course, she will be perfectly fine. She never leaves an assignment in the middle and at this time she has a lot of unfinished work left. Don't worry, give it a few days and she will be back to work." Rano had no idea how much of that was true but she needed to say it, needed to believe it.
The doctor came out after several more hours with some good news, but a lot of bad news as well, "Mr. Walia, Bani has regained consciousness and you can go see her but there are some complications that we have to discuss."
"What sorts of complications?" Jai was happy that she was awake!
"She is dealing with a lot of injuries and some of the major ones that will be affecting her for a while are temporalmandibular joint injury as well as whiplash injuries. Basically in simple English, Ms. Dixit has had a direct injury to her jaw which prohibits her from speaking or eating normally. The whiplashes have caused a limitation of the neck and head movement and also effected her peripheral vision which is usually temporary."
"Peripheral Vision? She won't be able to see? She won't be able to eat? But…" Jai couldn't believe what he was hearing, how can that happen to her?
"Well these things are usually temporary, she will have a hard time moving her body as the muscles are really stretched and they were under a lot of stress. She will be needing her family and friends to help her out a lot."
Rano couldn't believe her ears. Bani had never depended on anyone in her life and the fact that now she would need other people in order to survive would break her. That was one of the weakest points for Bani, she couldn't accept other people's help because she didn't trust them to want good for her.
Rano went inside the room and found her best friend lying there, with bandages all over her body. Bani opened her eyes slowly, finding only darkness around her. She tried to move her hands but was restricted by the bands surrounding her body, she felt totally lost.
Rano took Bani's hands and whispered, "Don't worry Bani, we are here for you."
Bani was glad at least someone was around her, she tried to speak but could not do that. Bani closed her eyes and tried to calm herself before opening them again, she could see a very blurry Rano standing next to her.
Rano wondered if Bani could see her, "Can you see me Bani?"
Bani had no way to communicate with her friend and tell her that yes, she could see her.
Rano realized that Bani couldn't speak, "If you can see me Bani, then flutter your eyes twice."
And Bani did as instructed and tried to smile but pain overtook her. Pieces of glasses had been taken off her face and it hurt for her muscles to expand or contract. The events of the previous night hit her and her eyes started roaming around the room to find that one person who she was worried about.
"Bani, don't worry he is perfectly fine, just worried sick about you!"
Bani closed her eyes but she still wanted to see him to appease her heart but had no way of telling that to Rano. Just then the door opened and Jai came inside the room with his hand in a plaster. Bani felt relieved that he was okay and made another attempt to smile.
"Hi Bani." Jai couldn't stand to see her in this position, it hurt him to see her in so much pain. "You probably want answers right now Bani and I wish I could give them to you but the Doctor will tell you a few things."
"Ms. Dixit, we are going to try and put some liquid down your throat with this test tube because at this time you can't feed yourself. We checked your vocal chords and you will be able to speak soon but at this time your throat is really dry and therefore there is no sounds coming out of it. You will have random losses of vision because your nerve cells are overacting and you will probably get migraines due to it. So, if you would please cooperate with us, we can get you fixed as soon as possible."
Bani tried to nod but her neck restricted her. She had never felt so useless in her life before a drop of tear slid down from the corner of her eyes. Rano couldn't stand there to see her friend have something pushed down her throat and so after a quick kiss on Bani's forehead Rano went out of the room. Jai came and stood right next to her and took her arms.
"You know Bani, maybe you are better like this, now you can't come up with excuses as to why you can't go to dinner with me," Jai tried to distract Bani as the doctors put needles in her back and on her arms to lower the pain.
Bani squished Jai's hand as the needle went into her arm.
"Bani, you know the first time I saw you enter that door in your suit with papers in your hands, I knew I was going to have a tough time chasing you, convincing you for a date."
Bani lowered her eyes because she could no longer hide her real face through cynical comments or sharp tongue.
The doctor proceeded to take Bani's mouth and push in a tube through it. Not once in this whole process did Jai leave Bani's hand even when due to pain, she squeezed it hard enough to stop any blood circulation. The process took less then 5 minutes but to both of them it seemed like eternity. Soon afterwards the tube was taken out and Bani's mouth was rinsed with a special medical wash. Bani tried to speak and a hearty cough came out, along with some blood. The doctors informed them it was normal but that didn't stop Jai from worrying.
Bani opened her mouth and it took a lot of energy to utter two simple words, "Thank you."
Jai bent down and landed a quick kiss on Bani's forehead in an attempt to get her to forget for one second where she was, and it worked.
Rano watched them from the window and felt a sense of peace. She went and sat down in the lobby and took out her diary.
What should I say in here? My best friend is in the hospital fighting for her life and I am sitting here trying to be optimistic. I just talked to the doctors and they told me that she is out of danger but a lot of damage has been done and it will take a lot of time for her to recover fully.
Knowing Bani and the type of person she is, I can't help but wonder, how will she be able to live without having control over everything she does? Isn't control the most necessary thing in her life?
Maybe this is God's way of letting Jai Walia get close to her because she can't really complain at this time, can she?
Maybe this is exactly what she needs, someone she can trust, someone whose shoulder she can put her head down and just rest.
Maybe Jai Walia will be to her what Ranveer is to me, my life.
And maybe, just maybe this time she will at least be able to tell Jai the truth about her past. She needs to tell someone because she has been hiding it for too long, and it doesn't have to be me.
Is that too optimistic? Well from what I see right now, Jai is sitting in the room, reading Bani the news—no this might just be it.
