The next day was Jai's 10 year college graduation reunion and he was allowed to bring a guest and of course he thought of none other then Bani.
Jai: Bani, today is the reunion, do you want to come?
Bani: Of course, I am sure all your friends are probably eager to meet your wife.
Jai: Well, it would be my pleasure to introduce you to them.
Bani: Really? You have no problems about me being so simple?
Jai: What are you talking about?
Bani: Nothing, never mind (turning around just a little hurt)
Jai: Bani, what is troubling you?
Bani: Here (handing him today's newspaper)
The heading of the article reads "Tycoon Jai Walia's simple, old fashioned wife."
Jai: What the hell is it?
Bani: Why are you asking me? I am not the one who wrote it… nor am I the one who has been quoted in that.
Jai: Quoted?
Bani: Enjoy reading.
With that Bani walked out of the room and decided to show everyone what she was made of. In gatherings till now she had worn a simple salwar kameez but if that was too simple for them she would show it to them. She took out the sari she had been gifted to wear after her wedding but never wore it. It was a spaghetti strap, a lavenderish pink color. (imagine a Barnali type of sari) Bani went into the bathroom and let her hair loose rather then the usual pony tale. She took a curler and curled the bottom of her hair (imagine Durga's hai when she came to Mumbai). Bani came out of the bathroom perfectly ready and all Jai could do was stare at her beauty, she looked mesmerizing, gorgeous to say the least.
Jai: Bani… I didn't say any of the things they quoted me in the newspaper. They are all just lying because they need a story.
Bani: I know
Jai: What?
Bani: Mr. Walia, I know you would never say such things as you hold a lot of respect for your family so if not for my sake, you would never say it for Dadaji's sake.
Jai: Then why were you so mad?
Bani: Oh come on, everyone has to get mad sometimes and anyways it gave me an opportunity to wear this sari so that I can tell the world what I am made up of.
Jai: You are looking pretty.
Bani: I know that too, are we ready to go?
Jai: More then ever.
Jai and Bani arrived at the party together and were instantly surrounded by the press, everyone was talking about Bani's new beautiful look. They took pictures of her nonstop and usually she would have been annoyed by it but she was in a good mood today.
Most of Jai's friends had been married by now and there was a couple compatible test that all the couples were told to play. Jai and Bani looked at each other and wondered how much they really knew about each other.
First all the wives were taken inside and asked a series of questions and their answers to them. For example a girl was asked her favorite color and then later on the husband would be asked what his wife's favorite color was and it was to see if there answers were correct or wrong… to see how much they knew about each other.
The hosts came out and started asking the husbands about their wives. Jai was the last person to be asked the questions and the highest score so far was a 8 out of 10. Jai had to beat that to be the most compatible person.
Host (Rocky): All right Mr. Walia, it's your turn. Ready?
Jai: I hope so.
Rocky: First question, what is your wife's favorite activity?
Jai: She loves cooking.
Rocky: Second question, what is the one day she cherishes the most.
Jai (remembering a convo he had with Bani about Rano): Her sister's birth.
Rocky: Third question, has your wife had any other boyfriends before you?
Jai (confused since they had never talked about it): I don't think so… at least none that I know of.
Rocky: Fourth question, what is her favorite song?
Jai (smiling as he remembered the ride to the party how they had talked about songs): Well it keeps changing with the time but as of right now she really likes Jiya Dhadhak
Rocky: Fifth question, what is her most priced object?
Jai: Her diary that she doesn't allow anyone to read.
Rocky: (jokingly) Not even her husband?
Jai (faking sadness): Nope not even me.
Rocky: Sixth question, If you guys have kids what would you name them?
Jai (embarrassed as they had never talked about it…) Well I want to name my child Krishna after my mother but I don't think she knows that.
Rocky: Seventh question, who is her favorite actor and actress?
Jai: Shahrukh and Preity for sure.
Rocky: Eight question, if there was a place she could go back to visit it would be?
Jai: Mount Abu.
Rocky: Ninth question, what is her favorite color?
Jai: Light blue.
Rocky: And final question, how long has it been since your marriage?
Jai: Three weeks and 2 days.
Rocky: Wow, Mr. Walia! Almost a perfect score. Now you are probably wondering which question you missed… well it's the most controversial one… this probably will lead to a conversation the two of you will have later on in this night.
Jai: Which one?
Rocky: The only question you missed was about your wife's past boyfriends. According to her, she has had one even though it only lasted a couple of weeks.
Jai: Really? She knew about Krishna? How?
Rocky: You will have to ask her that one… Well, it doesn't matter as you got the highest score so you are lucky and you passed. Now it is ladies' turn. We will start with Mrs. Bani Walia.
Bani: Yay.
Rocky: Your husband did really well so all the pressure is on you. First question, do you think your husband has had previous girlfriends.
Bani: Yup for sure.
Rocky: Wow, confident in that one aren't we?
Bani: Well he is famous, rich, and good looking why wouldn't he have had past girl friends.
Rocky: Allright then, we will see what the truth is. Second question, which band car does he like the most?
Bani: Black Mercedes because they are slick.
Rocky: Third question, who does he admire the most in his life?
Bani: His dadaji.
Rocky: Fourth question, does he want a girl first or a guy?
Bani: A girl, I think.
Rocky: Fifth question, where did you guys first meet?
Bani: In the middle of the road, I don't want to have to explain that story in front of this crowd.
Rocky: Sixth question, what was your first fight about?
Bani: About how he is all wrong for me to get married to.
Rocky: I am guessing he won?
Bani: I think we both won.
Jai was amused by her answers and somewhat touched.
Rocky: Seventh question, who was most happiest person with your marriage?
Bani: Mr. Walia's dadaji.
Rocky: Eight question, who is his best friend?
Bani: Aditya uncle
Rocky: Ninth question, which country does he like better, India or America?
Bani: I think before we got married he liked America but now because of Dadaji and everyone he seems to be enjoying India as well.
Rocky: And last but not least, what is his favorite food?
Bani: Gobbi Manchurian with some puris and choley.
Rocky: Wow, you have beat all the guys including your husband since you got a perfect score now lets see the rest of the ladies.
The rest of the game passed and Jai and Bani had gotten the highest scores in their fields and were given the Most Compatible Couple award.
When they were finally alone, Jai got to ask Bani the things that had been bugging him.
Jai: Bani how
Bani: did I know about Krishna?
Jai: Yah…
Bani: Dadaji came to be a few days ago and was talking randomly when he started to talk about your mom and how she was really sweet and nice and he told me how you have always wanted your kid to be named after your mom.
Jai: Oh…
Bani: Yah
Jai: And you have had boyfriends? Who? I mean you don't have to tell me…
Bani: Just one. When I first met him, he flirted with me and I ignored him but then he asked me and I finally agreed. We went out for a couple of weeks and realized that we were just meant to be friends and ever since then he has been my best friend, Pushkar.
Jai: You and… Pushkar?
Bani: Yup, of course that was a long time back. Almost 4 years.
Jai: You know more about me then I know about you.
Bani: Nope we know more about each other then most of these other couples who are probably are fighting right now
Jai: fighting? Why?
Bani: Because the girl is probably saying "I told you this last week during that party how could you forget?!'"
Both of them broke into laughter that made everyone look at them but neither of them cared they were enjoying.
Over the next few weeks, they were used to each other's presence. Bani was fulfilling all the roles of a bahu, a wife, and a student. Her final exam was the next day and it was about the time she was getting worried. That night for the first time ever since their marriage, Bani didn't cook dinner and Jai was already missing her cooking. She wanted to cook but he had forced her to focus on studying and so she was in their bedroom studying.
Jai went into the kitchen because he wanted to make some coffee for Bani to keep her awake while she studied. Usually it was Bani that brought the coffee for him when he needed to work or had a late night meeting. Bani's eyes closed on top of her books, it had been a long day. Wwhen Jai saw this he knew she needed some rest. But he also knew that she was the kind of girl that if she didn't study she will think the next day that she will fail. And so he did what he thought was best. He picked her up in his arms and put her on the bed to sleep. And he put the alarm on his phone for 5 in the morning so she would have 3 hours before the test to worry. It was already 12 and Jai knew he had to finish some work as it was urgent. By the time he was done it was 3 and he got up for Bani again at 5.
Jai: Bani, get up. (Brushing the hair off her face)
Bani: Hmm… in a while
Jai: I don't think so. Come on honey, its time for you to get up.
Bani realized in her sleep who it was that was trying to get her up. She woke up and saw Jai standing there with coffee in his hand.
Bani: Oh my God! Don't tell me I fell asleep! Oh No! I am totally going to fail. It's probably 7 and I have no time to review. Oh my God!
Jai: SHhhhhhhhhhhhhh Calm down! First of all my ears hurt so shhhh and secondly it's 5 so u have 3 hrs to cram. Let's get moving.
Bani: Oh… thanks for getting me up.
Jai: I knew you would go crazy if you got up at 7.
Bani: Uh huh.
Bani got up from bed too abruptly and the blood rushed to her head making her dizzy. But Jai was quick. He put the coffee down and caught her before she was down.
Jai: Are you okay?
Bani: Yah, wow. Got up too quickly.
Jai gave his hand and Bani grabbed it, getting up slowly.
Jai: Okay, now I have this review prepared for you… just go through this and you should be fine.
Bani: You prepared a review? (Incredibly touched)
Jai: Well, can I break your illusion? I didn't prepare it but rather a friend of mine who took the class last time prepared it.
Bani: Still you asked him for it, that's nice enough. Thanks!
Bani took the notes and was furiously studying and trying to memorize everything. The test was 4 hours long, with a break in the middle for 15 minutes. Bani went into the room, a little calm but mostly going crazy. During the break, Bani came out thinking there would be no one there for her but was surprised to find Mr. Walia sitting on the couch.
Bani: Mr. Walia, aap… yaha?
Jai: Of course, you didn't think I would just let you go through that pain all alone. How was it so far?
Bani: It was okay, I really have to thank you for the review it was quite useful!
Jai: No problem. Here this is for you.
Bani: What is it?
Jai: Open it. I figured you would get hungry so I brought some chocolate to keep you awake throughout the test.
Bani: Oh thank you! You have no idea how much I owe you for all of this.
