Chapter 1
Bani swung down from the horse, and it dipped its nose into the long grass growing along the side of the building. She shaded her eyes with one hand. The glare was intense. She should have worn sunglasses.
A man was leaning against the railing surrounding the small corner store, legs crossed negligently at the ankles, a bottle of pop in one hand. He was staring at her.
She gave him a long, appraising look, and he met her eyes without blinking. Her immediate impression was of thick, dark hair and wide, brown eyes. He needed a shave; beneath the stubble she observed a rugged but handsome face, with a strong jaw and thin lips. He was wearing a blue t-shirt and jeans, the denim worn and faded, stretched across muscular thighs. His stance was casual, but she had a feeling hed been watching her intently, perhaps all the while shed been riding up the lane. The thought sent a pleasant nervousness through her spine.
He grinned at her, raising a bottle of pop to his lips, and she realized that shed stood for some time gaping at this good-looking stranger. She had a feeling he knew just the effect he was having on her.
She glanced away, tied the reins loosely around the rail, and mounted the steps to the store, intent on walking by without looking at him. She was conscious that the dark strands of her long hair were tangled from her ride, and she automatically reached to smooth them down.
As she approached him, she betrayed herself by casting a sidelong glance in his direction. He was still watching her, his eyes taking in her green halter top and snug jeans, then rising again to study her face. She now saw that his eyes were a startling light brown.
"Hello," he said. His voice was smooth, husky and deep.
She stopped again, and stared, her eyes traveling the length of his well-formed body. He was absolutely gorgeous standing there, she thought. But there was something else about him that arrested her to the spot. He was handsome, and tall, but it was in the way he leaned back, confident as she assessed him.
"Who are you?" she asked.
He raised one eyebrow. "Who are you?"
"Bani," she said.
"Jai" he said.
He lounged casually back, as though waiting to see what she would do next. She was gaping at the man as though shed never seen one of his species before. Collecting herself, she nodded curtly. He grinned at her. She forced her eyes away and headed for the door. She slipped inside quickly.
As her eyes adjusted to the light in the store, she pushed the man from her mind. She had a million things to do today, and she could not afford a distraction, even if she was curious. It wasnt often they saw strangers in Mount Abu. At least, not men who looked like him.
"You can close your eyes to the things you do not want to see, but you cannot close your heart to the things you do not want to feel."
