Part 23
Rano was starring at her hot coffee, trying her best to avoid Sahils gaze. Sahil had taken her to a popular coffee shop. The unconvienent silence between them was broken by Sahil. 'Rano? Please let me start by saying that I'm extremely sorry for whatever I've put you through. I ... I ...' Sahil reached for Rano's hand. She got scared and tried to pull it away, but he hold it tightly yet gently. Sahil took a deep breath before he continued. 'About three years ago I met a girl. It was love at first sight. I was madly in love with her and did whatever I could to win her heart over. After weeks of persuading her she finally accepted to be my girlfriend. We dated for a couple of weeks and I was on cloud nine. I had bought and engagement ring and kept walking with it for weeks. I was desperate to find the right place and time to ask her to marry me. I kept planning and planning. One day I was walking down the street when I passed this small and cosy. I decided that, that was the perfect place. I walked in to make the arrangements for the perfect moment of my life.' Sahil paused, while Rano was on the edge of her chair to know what happened next. When she saw the tears sparkling in Sahils eyes she put her other hand on both their hands and pinched him lightly as an encouragement to continue. Sahil fought against his tears and continued his story. 'I made all arrangement and walked out again all excited. I wanted to cross the streets when I suddenly saw Simran walking down the streets giggling and having fun with her best friend. I called out for her and she was suprised to see him. She came running towards me and crossed the street without looking and she got hit by a car.' Sahil was crying by know. Rano had a hard time keeping her own tears. All she could do was rub Sahils hand in comfort. 'I screamed for help, but it was too late she died in my arms and right there I promised her to never love anyone else again.' A deep sigh escaped his chest before he continued his story with a suffocated voice. 'Years later I met you. I saw you for the first time with you sisters at the mall. I by accident over-heard you conversation.' A little smile broke through Sahils face. 'You and Pia were fighting over who loved your Bani didi more. Pia said something like she loved Bani more than this world and you replied back saying you loved you Bani didi more than your life and that you lived just to see your Bani didi happy. Your words touched me and I thought you were cute. After that I met you a couple of times in college and I started to feel attracted to you. Every time my heart skipped a beat seeing you I hated myself more. I couldn't fall in love with you. I couldn't betray Simran. I had promised her! So I tried to hate you and did whatever to make you hate me. I never thought things would go out of hand like this.' Rano didn't hear anything else Sahil was saying. She was blushing while she let Sahils words sink in.
Jai tip-toed to his daugters room. He opened the door and peeked in. He saw how Bani and Anjali were sleeping peacefully. It was just a litte past 6 p.m. and he wondered how the two could sleep so early. He walked to Bani's side of bed and kneeled down. He watched her as she was sleeping. She was holding Anjali in a tight embrace and her face was covered by her silky hair. Jai couldn't fight the urge to remove her hair. He pulled her hair back carefully and kept watching Bani and Anjali for another 15 minutes before deciding to wake Bani up. 'Bani. Bani.' Bani pulled the sheet over her head. 'Shut it Pushkar! I'm tired let me sleep!' Jai was taken aback. He wondered what was going on between Bani and Pushkar. If she thought he was Pushkar, that meant Pushkar had been in her bedroom before. Jai was annoyed by the jealousy he was feeling all of the sudden. He cleared his throat and tapped Bani on the cheek to wake her up. 'I'm not Pushkar, I'm Jai.', he said with a louder voice. Bani sat up straight at once. With sleepy eyes she blushly looked at Jai. 'Mr. Walia?' Jai and Bani were just inches away from each other. Jai starred in Bani's dark eyes. He was searching for words, but he couldn't find only one word. 'Beautiful', he wisphered. Bani looked shocked at Jai. 'Excuse me?' Jai realized what he was saying and doing and he quickly got up. 'I said, don't you think Anjali is just beautiful?' Without waiting for a reply he walked towards the door. Bani quickly straightened her hair and got out of the bed. She felt so embarassed that Jai had seen her sleeping. She silently hoped she wasn't snoring. Before closing the door behind him Jai told a confused Bani to get Anjali up and ready, so they could go and pick up her sisters.
