PART 31
Just before 11pm Jai hears a car driving in through the gates. He storms into his bedroom, onto the balcony and sees Bani getting out of a taxi.
Jai, unable to see through the alcohol and his anger: …I trusted you Bani…
The house is silent and all Bani hears as she walks up the stairs is the ominous ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. She knows Jai is back home, Tony had told her he had come in at 8pm!!
She walks into the bedroom and sees Jai standing on the balcony. He turns as he hears her close the door and she can tell straightaway that he has been drinking.
Bani: Jai… I'm sorry, I-
Jai: Kahan thi tum?
Bani: Voh me… voh traffic aur uparse itni barsaat… me-
Jai: KAHAN THI TUM?!
She jumps on hearing him shout so loudly. He walks slowly towards her and she backs away from him as he advances, quickly hitting the wall behind her. After a long time she feels afraid of him again – the look in his eyes… anger… despair… desperation?
He places his hands on the wall either side of her, preventing her escape, his eyes burning into hers. His face is so close she can feel the heat of his anger on her cheeks and doesn't realise she has stopped breathing…
Bani: Me voh… Jatin ne meri madat maangi thi, unka naya ghar decorate karne me… voh me dadi ko bata ke gayi thi…
Jai: Aur mujhe…? Mujhe bataane ki zaroorat mehsoos nahi hui… RAAT KE GYARAH BAJ CHUKE HAI BANI, ITNI DER SE UNKE GHAR PE KYA KAR RAHI THI TUM?!!
Bani: I'M SORRY! I'm sorry Mr Walia, voh barsaat… aur traffic… aur mera mobile-
Jai whispers: Kyun Bani…? Kyun?
The look in his eyes silences her. She is shocked to see… tears?! Jai's eyes are tearful and he looks so broken, hurt, helpless… this frightens her more than his angry shouts! She places her hand on his cheek, her voice shaking with worry…
Bani: Jai… Jai aapke aankhon me aansun? Kya hua… batao na mujhe… mujhe bahut ghabrahat ho rahi hai please batao na…
He doesn't answer her – he doesn't move. His hands stay on either side of her and he leans closer, his eyes searching her face for… for what?
After an eternity he moves his hand from the wall and strokes her cheek with his hand, pushing her hair away from her face. He seems so agitated, so desperate to say something. His forehead meets hers and tears fall from his eyes…
Jai cannot bring himself to say what he is thinking. He had spent the last three hours anxiously waiting for her, planning in his head how he would confront her. One look at her and that had all fallen away. She was dressed in a baby pink sari that was soaked through; her hair was wet and her skin pale. One look at her and he was blown away. Just being so close to her knocked him for six… he couldn't think straight… he wanted her, needed her so badly.
Jai: Kyun kar rahi ho tum aisa Bani… kya ghalati hai meri… Bani main… voh tum… bahut dard hota hai Bani...
Bani: Please Jai mujhe batao, problem kya hai?! Kya mujhse se koi ghalti hogayi hai… kissi ne kuch kaha…?
Jai remembers what Jatin had said the night before - "maine aisa kuch bhi nahin kiya jo tumhaari biwi nahin chahti thi……maine bachpan se lekar aaj tak pyaar kiya hai……mere paas chali aayegi……"
His temper flares again and he grabs hold of Bani's arms pulling her close.
Jai: MERI ho tum… suna tumne…? Sirf meri!!
Bani: Jai… Jai you're hurting me… please mujhe chhod do!!!
She breaks free and pushes him away. He staggers backwards, lowers his head and closes his eyes, unable to stop his tears. He runs both hands through his hair and falls to his knees in front of her. Now Bani is crying too – and even she isn't quite sure why! She kneels in front of him, begging him to talk to her, becoming more and more anxious.
Bani: Jai… aapko ho kya gaya hai… aap-
Jai: YAHAN KYUN BAITHI HO… WAPAS CHALIJAO UNKE PAAS… Sirf vo hi tumhe samajhta hai na…? Sirf vo hi tumhaare problems solve kar sakta hai, vo hi tumhaari beheno ki chinta karta hai… vo hi tumhare bina adhoora hai… sirf vo hi…
She stares at him in shock, unable to process what he has just said. He looks straight at her, tears in his eyes, his jaw set in barely contained bitterness. His mood after the party, leaving this morning without telling her, the drinking, the anger… the reason behind his strange behaviour finally dawns on her. It was jealousy! He thought she and Jatin were….!!
Bani, quietly, and hurt: Itna hi bharosa hai Jai…? Mere pyaar par… meri wafaa par… mujh par…?
Their eyes lock and she feels a familiar electric current run through her from head to toe. Those eyes… already so intense… today looking into them made her heart race uncontrollably. Her breath catches in her throat as she feels herself fall into those eyes so deep, expressive and passionate. She stands up and turns away from him.
She is so hurt that he could believe her to feel this way about anyone else other than him, after everything they had been through together. But in those eyes she sees his pain too.
This was Jai Walia – passionate and possessive, his pride guarding his vulnerability. She should have known from experience that whether he hated someone or he loved them, he did so with his entire being – to extremity.
He sees her tears and hates himself for causing them. He sees on her face the pain he has caused her but at the same time, he knows she understands. He knows that no-one knows him better than her. He had been hurt so many times that he didn't know how to trust anyone anymore.
Just one question from her banishes his every suspicion and insecurity. He should have known that someone who had the compassion to forgive all of his past misdeeds could never hurt him this way.
Each question answered, every feeling validated… wordlessly… such was their connection.
He stands and turns her around to face him. Taking her beautiful face into his hands he kisses her cheek softly, catching a tear with his lips.
His hands come down on her shoulders, travelling down her arms. She shivers at the touch of his warm hands on her moist, clammy skin.
Jai: Don't… don't ever leave me Bani… zaroorat ho tum meri… marjaonga me...
His lips press down onto hers as he kisses her with such urgency, pushing her back against the wall, muffled moans at the back of his throat.
Linking his fingers through hers, he lifts her arms above her head and presses his body against hers. He runs his hands back down her arms to her waist.
He hears her moans smothered by his deep, rough kiss, tasting her lips, biting them…
Weaving his fingers through her damp hair, his lips move to her neck.
He kisses her cool skin, as he wraps his arm around her waist pulling her so close. A shiver runs down her spine and at the same time heat envelopes her; she bites her lower lip as she feels his kisses all over her body.
She arches her back in ecstasy and turns around leaning against the wall. Her hands are still outstretched above her head and his hands interlink with hers as he places aggressive, lingering, smouldering kisses across the back of her neck and shoulders.
He forcefully spins her around to face him and kisses her lips again, unable and unwilling to stop for air.
The passion in his touch is different tonight – rougher, more desperate, more intense…
Each kiss, each touch, wreaks havoc on Bani's senses and before long she is overtaken by a desire… a need for Jai and his burning touch.
She pushes him towards the bed, clawing at his clothes as they move.
Her wet sari is soon discarded too as he wraps her in a warm blanket before they fall onto their bed, unaware of the rain and thunder outside – conscious only of the lightning felt with each touch, each kiss…
