PART 27

Jai had come to Rano's room not long after Pia had finished recounting the events of the past few months. He saw Jatin take Bani and Rano by the hand and sit them down. He heard him resolve their problems in one fell swoop, feeling a familiar clenching in his heart as he watched that stranger so effortlessly do what he had been attempting for days now!

He was happy for all of them, especially for Bani of course, but that didn't quell the niggling feeling of annoyance that they had listened to Jatin so readily, when they had taken no heed of his attempts to patch them up!

Roshni watched him walk back down the stairs with a despondent look on his face – she wondered what he had walked in on…?!

The party is well under way – it appeared the Walia's really knew how to throw a party!! After a champagne toast for the two newly-wed couples, the band began playing music and the two couples were invited to dance, soon joined by many other couples.

Jai stood at the edge of the crowd, his eyes searching for one person only. They lit up on catching sight of Bani in conversation with Mr and Mrs Khanna. She played the perfect hostess, calling waiters to serve them with drinks, engaging them in conversation. He was mesmerised by her smile, her laugh. His heart beat faster everytime her saw her fingers fidgeting with her earrings or her bangles. But through it all he couldn't shake his disappointment at what he had seen in Rano's room. Yes, maybe his ego was hurt that she had listened to Jatin but ignored his attempts to mend things with Rano – but wasn't he entitled to this feeling?!

Lost in his thoughts he failed to notice the object of his reflections standing next to him.

Bani nudged him, wondering what had him so occupied. Failing to get a response she snaked her hand around his waist and pinched hard!

Jai: OUCH!! Bani yeh tum kya kar rahi ho?!!

He rubbed his side surprised at this rude interruption to his musings.

Bani: Aap ko sapne se bahaar nikal rahi hoon!! Kahan khogaye the aap?!! Main kabse yaha khadi hoon!! Ya phir koi aur nazar aa gayi aapko is bheed mein?

He can't help but smile at her childlike pouting!

Jai: Meri nazar hamesha tum par hi tiki hui rehti hai – in aankhon mein tumhare siva kisi aur ke liye jagah hi nahin hai!

She smiles up at him and he leads her on to the dance floor. At his request the band have begun to play the song they danced to in the Shamiana restaurant, just before leaving Edinburgh:

"O saathi re… tere bina bhi kya jeena… tere bina bhi kya jeena…

phoolon me kaliyon me…sapnon ki galiyon me…

tere bina kuch kahi na… tere bina bhi kya jina… o saathi re…tere bina bhi kya jina"

The dancefloor is full of happy couples but to Jai and Bani there is no-one else around them. The song ends much too soon and the music changes tempo. The band begins to play a medley of new songs starting with "rock'n'roll soniye" from KANK.

Jai: Bani, ab me jaa raha hoon, mujhe aisa music pe dance karna nahin aata!

Bani: Nahin Jai, aisa mat kaho mujhe yeh gaana bahut achcha lagta hai!!

Jai: To tum dance karo na, please….

Jatin appears from nowhere!!: Bani, inhe force kyun kar rahi ho!! Waisa bhi inhe kisi aur ki baat man ne ki aadat nahin hogi. Tum mere saath dance karo, chalo!

Bani looks surprised at this sharp remark from her friend. Before she can say anything further Jatin pulls her onto the dancefloor. She decides this isn't the best time to question Jatin and they join Anu and Rano for a dance.

Jai watches from his table replaying Jatin's comment in his head. He was not stupid – judging by his reaction to Pia's words in Rano's room he guessed that Jatin thought he was still treating Bani as badly as he used to. Funnily enough – this didn't upset him, to be honest he couldn't care less what Jatin thought of him – what hurt him was that Bani had twice now failed to correct him.

He called the waiter over with a glass of whiskey, downing the sharp liquid in one go. In his mind he played over Bani's reaction to Jatin everytime they met. He couldn't stand her even smiling at someone else! That smile was his! Bani was HIS!

He looks up again but cannot see Bani and Jatin anywhere! He stands up, roving the room for a glimpse of her but to no avail.

Roshni: Kisse dhoond rahe ho Jai?

Jai rolls his eyes: (under his breath) yeh yaha bhi tapak padi!!

Roshni: Tsk tsk!! Itni becheni?!! Itna pareshaan hone ki kya zaroorat hai Jai? Bani ko dhoondh rahe ho na? Abhi abhi to voh yahi thi… Jatin ke saath!

She smirks as he whips round, his eyes breathing fire.

Jai: Tum kehna kya chahti ho?

Roshni: Kuch nahi!! Me kya kahoongi? Bahut garmi hai andar, shayad dono fresh air ke liye baahar gaye ho?

Jai recognises that evil glint in her eyes and goes to walk past her towards the main door.

Roshni, placing a hand on his shoulder: Arre Jai, itni bhi kya jaldi hai?! Kahin bhi pohonch jaate ho tum!! Achche dost hai voh, kitne din se nahin mile, I'm sure they have… a lot to catch up on!

Jai clenches his fist trying to control his temper. As much as he would like to slap her again he doesn't want to ruin the party for the newlyweds.

Jai: Maine tumse pehele bhi kaha hai, apni kaali zubaan bandh rakha karo Roshni. Bhale hi tumne Bani ko apne jhute achchepan se jeetliya hai, but I am not as nave as her. Main tumhaare har chaal ko predict kar sakta hoon Roshni, and if you ever even insinuate anything derogatory about my wife again, to mujhse bura koi nahin hoga!!

He stalks towards the entrance leaving Roshni to smirk evilly and flick her fringe! ;-)

Making his way towards the brightly lit garden he is getting more and more worked up. He knows what Roshni is like and yet he still lets her wind him the wrong way! But he couldn't help it, when it came to Bani the normal rules didn't apply anymore. The iconic Jai Walia had become an emotional fool when it came to his wife – not that that was a bad thing!!

Approaching the garden he hears voices.

Jatin: I'm sorry Bani, mujhe maaf kardo.

Bani: Koi baat nahin Jatin, lekin aisa phir se kabhi mat hone dena!

He turns the corner and is stopped in his tracks to see Bani and Jatin in each other's arms. Bani's back was towards him, but Jatin faced him.

Jatin looks up and notices Jai standing at the entrance to the garden. He smiles at him and hugs Bani even tighter…
