PART 16

The shrill sound of the telephone ringing makes them both jump apart. They stare at each other for what seems like an age and Jai thinks to himself that he should kill the person on the other end of the line!!! Bani smiles softly as she turns away and Jai goes to pick up the phone…

Jai: HELLO!!

He almost barks down the phone, highly irritated at being disturbed so annoyingly!!!!

And the Queen of Bad Timing strikes again…..

Pia: Er… hello? Hello… Mr Walia? Woh me Banidi ko birthday wish karna chahti thi – kahi maine aapko disturb to nahin kiya?

Jai sighs and rolls his eyes: Nahi Pia, ek minute mein Bani ko phone deta hoon…

He hands the phone to Bani and doesn't fail to notice the smile playing at the corner of her mouth, irritating him even more!

He goes into the bathroom to change and Bani takes the phone into the front room.

Bani: Kaisi ho Pia?

Pia: HI BANIDI!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Sorry, itni der se phone karne ke liye lekin me sabse pehela aap ko wish karna chahti thi!!! I was the first one na?!!

Bani blushes as she remembers Jai's touch: Sorry Pia, aaj sabse pehele kisi aur ne mujhe birthday wish kiya tha!!

Pia is quiet for a few seconds and then giggles as she realises what Bani is saying.

Pia: Oh di, koi baat nahin! I guess abse yeh haq kisi aur ka ho gaya hai na?! Achcha yeh batao, Mr Walia ka gift kaisa laga?!! Itni mehanat ki unhone aapka yeh holiday plan karne mein! I feel so guilty ke mein unki theek se madat nahin kar paayi!!

Bani: Koi baat nahin Pia, sab kuch achcha hi hua! Mein kitni surprised thi I can't tell you!!! Mein kya kya soch rahi thi aur unhone mere liye itna achcha surprise plan kar ke rakha tha!! Oh, by the way, ab Pushkar ki tabeeyat kaisi hai?

Pia: Ab unka fever pehele se kam ho gaya hai. Kitni bar kaha hai ke agar baarish me motorbike bina helmet ke chalaonge to bimaar honge hi na!! Lekin meri sunta hi kaun hai?!! Maine unhe Doctor ke paas le hi jaanewaali thi par achanak yaha Rano-Saahil aagaye aur-

She stops and bites her tongue, mentally chiding herself for mentioning Rano. It would just upset Banidi and she was on holiday!!

Bani, quietly: Rano… Rano tumhaare ghar pe aayi thi?

Pia: H… haan. Sorry Banidi, mujhe kehna hi nahin chahiye tha, aapka mood kharaab ho gaya na?

Bani: Aisi baat nahin he Pia, bas… kaisi he woh?

Pia: Udaas mat hoiye di, woh bilkul theek hai, aur aapko bahut yaad bhi karti hai. Usse lagta hai ke aap unse bahut naraaz hai, warna woh bhi aap ko birthday wish karna chahti thi! Kal main usse phone karke bataane wali hu ke aap unhe kitna miss karti-

Bani: Nahin Pia, aisa kuch mat karna!

Pia is surprised at the uncharacteristic harshness in Bani's voice!

Pia: Kyun Banidi kya aap Rano se ab bhi naraaz-

Bani: Haan Pia mein ab bhi Rano se bahut naraaz hu. Aur naraaz se zyaada disappointed hu me usse…. Chhoti behen hai woh meri, fikar hoti hai uski lekin iska matlab yeh nahin ke uske dhokhe ko maine maaf kardiya hai.

Pia: Di yeh aap kaisi baatein-

Bani: Jaane do Pia, mein is baare mein abhi baat nahin karna chahti…

Tum so jao ab Pia, der ho chuki hai. Mumbai pohachti mein tum dono se milne aajaongi ok?

Pia doesn't want to upset her sister anymore and so lets the issue lie.

Pia: Ok Banidi, I hope you have a great birthday, aap dono khoob enjoy karna!

Bani puts the phone down and tiptoes back into the bedroom. Jai is already in bed, asleep – though she fleetingly suspects otherwise! She smiles and shakes her head, looking down at her mangalsutra. It was the most precious gift she had ever received and she didn't think even Jai knew how happy he had made her tonight. She pulls the quilt over his shoulders and lay down next to him, content to just watch him sleep. It is not long before her exhaustion catches up with her and she too slips into a world of dreams.

Promise I'll post a better and longer part very very soon!!! 😳
