Chapter 3

Jai couldn't shut his eyes that day. What has he gotten into? He had hit a girl and she had lost her memory. The look in her eyes took his peace of mind. The doctor was offered another room upstairs to rest. Jai left his bed and walked to see what she was doing. He tip toed towards the guest room. The door was ajar. He could see the bed slightly through the door. He stood hesitantly before the door. She was not on the bed. He opened the door little more looking into the room she was walking down the room scratching her shoulder and arms and tugging at the shabby gown. He instantly knew the gown was making her very itchy. He knocked on the door and she turned to him startled. 'I am sorry to startle you.. does your gown make you uncomfortable?'

She took a second to nod. 'is this my dress?' she asked in her small voice.'

'No, er on the way I took you to a small hospital they changed your dress. You were dripping wet…. Let me see if I can find my sister's dress in here.' He said turning away from her.

'Your sister is here?' she was anxious there was at least a woman in this place other than her.

'Er no.. she lives little far but she visits here and let me see if I can find something…' he walked hurriedly to the room his sister used.

Bani sat on the bed looking lost itching her hand. He came after sometime with a long night gown. He handed it to her. 'I can only find this, I think the size is too big for you but hope you will adjust with it I'll do something in the morning.'

Bani looked at the gown it was too long for her. It was a silk gown looked very expensive and it had a good smell. She needed to take bath and if she could get little hot water it would be god send. She was feeling very cold.

'Can I take bath?' she asked hesitantly.

'Yes sure .. all the things you can find in there and let me switch on the heater you can take a warm bath and it will help you..'

She nodded feeling very grateful towards him when she saw him for the first time she felt he was unapproachable. Here he was being very nice to her talking to her with warmth did this man hit her ..caused her accident? She did not want to think any unpleasant thing right now she needed good bath. She saw him leave the bathroom at the door he stood holding the handle. 'Take rest.'

She nodded.

Bani had nice bath. She had no idea how long she spend under the shower. She scrubbed her skin and then stood under the shower for a long time. Dried her, wore the gown that was too loose and long she held the gown in one hand came out with the towel to dry her hair. It took her along time to dry her long hair. Her shoulder ached and she put the towel away. In another fifteen minutes she was fast asleep.

Jai did not sleep he was up in the morning. He walked to the living room to find the paper on top of the tea poi. His maid was home. She had always kept the paper and tea on the table when he woke in the morning. He needed a good explanations to give it to her. He was on the way to kitchen he saw yashoda dai walk in with a cup of tea. She smiled at him.

'You are up.' She handed the tea to him.

'Dai ma…you have to make two more tea we have guests.'

Her face lit with a smile. 'Mausi and your sister are here?'

'No dai ma, Dr. Sharma and a girl is here she is resting in the guest room .'

The woman frowned. She did not understand why a doctor and a girl. Jai explained to her his endeavor.

'Is she alright Munna?'

'Yes and No. she has lost her memory and doesn't remember her name. and the doctor was here to take care of her.'

The woman called God loudly. She did not understand what loosing memory was and how can someone forget her name that was beyond her. she went to the kitchen to make more tea. The doctor came down wishing him good morning and asking about his patient if he had taken a look at her.

'No doc I did not see her in the morning.'

'I'll take a look at her..' Dr.Sharma walked to the guest room knocked and went in.

She was sitting on the bed looking lost. She looked at him and got up holding the gown in her hand.

'How are you young lady? You look hm.. fine.'

She forced a smile. Had tea?'

She shook her head.

'Come out of the room dear we will have tea together. He extended his hand. She hesitantly took his hand and took a step forward tripping over the nightgown. He steadied her. Bani held the gown in another hand and walked to the living room with the doctor. Jai saw them and he got up. She looked very comical in the long gown. She sat on the settee and looked at him. Dai ma bought tea for them and the lady and Bani exchanged glances. Bani was glad to see a woman. She handed her tea and smiled at the girl.

'Well Jai, we need to get her to the hospital for proper check up and before that we need to get her some suitable cloths.'

'Yes, I'll ask someone to pick something for her.' he said.

'I'll ask Rama to pick something suitable for her. she is hm…' the doctor assessed Bani. 'My Reshmi's size… let me call her.'

Thanks doc I don't know how to repay you this.'

'Oh yes You can my boy I take a huge fees..' laughed the doctor throatily looking at Bani. She looked very pathetic. Her skin looked pale.

'Get this girl something to eat first.' He said.

Jai nodded and went to search for Dai ma.

Rama Sharma came with shopping bags to Jai's house. He had called his office to his secretary to get his schedule for the day some he postponed and some he decided to attend. The lady Rama who was in her early fifties went to meet Bani spoke to her making at her ease. Asked her to freshen up and change in to one of the dresses she had brought. Jai left home earlier than the doctor couple and promised to meet at the hospital.

Dr. Sharma left to his hospital and his wife promised to take the girl with her to the hospital. Bani knew by the middle of the day all these people were very busy ones and was taking their time off for her from their tight schedules.

Bani went through all the possible tests at the hospital. The doctors that had checked came with the conclusion she was suffering from Amnesia in time she would remember everything and the time….. no one could say when.

Jai reached the hospital later in the evening and was upset with the news he had no idea what to do with her. He then decided to find out about the girl in his own way. He would look for any clue at the place of the accident till then he had to bear with her. he did not have the heart to send her anywhere till then. Dr. Sharma felt bad for him. he loved the man and their relationship went a long way. Dr. Sharma had only one thing to say let the girl stay with Jai. He would have taken her under his wing but he and his wife were going out for a month and that was vacation planned six months ago. Jai did not want o alter their plans. The other option was to call up his Mausi and sister. His sister would make a big hungama and upset the girl and Mausi he did not know what to do he decided to take her home with him and find out about her.

His schedules were planned before hand and everything would turn upside down if he went after finding who she was but this was about a life of a girl he did not want to spoil her life because of him. He did not want to be a reason for anything bad that would happen to her. He took her back home and was quiet on the way back. Bani was lost in thoughts. She had no idea what was in store for her? how would she cope with her life? What was she supposed to do? Who was she and what was her name? how the accident happened.

As far as she remembered she heard him and the doc talk about the weather on that fateful day. What in the world was she doing on that particular day alone on the road? Where was she going? Did she have any one? Her eyes filled at the thought.

Jai turned his attention on her as he heard her sniff. He felt bad.

'It's alright we will find out who you are I have my source.'

Chapter4

Jai took off to the village to find about a missing girl. He took Mahesh with him. Jai was sure he would not leak anything confidential. By the end of the day Mahesh came with the news a girl named Bani was missing and she was one Nishikant Dixit's daughter he died recently of heart attack and he had worked for Walia's factory.

Jai was stunned at the news. He did remember Nishikant. They had fired him for cheating the company. He had seen a confidential letter from Nishikant on his table. He couldn't read them. He was busy the whole day in the office. The letter was lying in the drawer of his office. He couldn't believe the man was no more. He decided to stay the night at the guest house. he had arranged Dai ma to stay with the girl. The next day Mahesh went to the village with the girl's photograph to make sure it was same girl they were talking about. He returned in mid afternoon with the news. It was same girl. The only person who was worried about her was her next door neighbor. Mahesh had to cook up some stories about Bani. he told the woman Bani had send him to tell he she was fine and she got a Job in a company and she would contact her soon. Mausi found it very hard to believe but Mahesh had convinced her somehow. He made sure that her missing case was not registered in the local police station.

Jai returned in the afternoon. He went straight to his office. He wanted to read the letter first. He reached for the letter and opened to read. The man had cited his innocence all through the letter he was working for the firm for 20 years and he wouldn't dream of doing such thing to the company he swore on his daughter he did not do anything wrong. If at all Mr. Walai believed him he requested to unearth the real culprit.

Jai folded the letter and kept it back in his drawer. He would look into the matter he had decided.

Bani were sitting in the living room watching something on TV. She heard the sound of the car. She looked expectantly at the door. Jai walked in saw her and stood looking at her. he knew she was waiting for the news. She got up and walked towards him. 'Did you find anything about me?'

'hm…'

'Tell me..' she said eagerly. Jai looked at her small face and said. 'come and sit down.'

She obeyed him. 'Did you eat something?' he asked casually.

'Yes.'

'Did you take the medicine?'

'Please tell me what you found about me? What's my name? and who am I?'

'Your name is Bani, Bani Dixit.'

Bani..' she repeated. 'Bani Dixit.' it did not ring any bell but she was glad she has a name. Dai ma can call her by name now… 'And?

How will he tell her she is all alone in the world her father had passed away few days ago and she was an orphan he did not have the heart to say …

'Tell me…' she went and caught his hand. Jai felt a cold hand on his wrist. Her hold tightened as he took time to answer.

'Tell me.. Please what else do you know about me? Do I have any one? Am I an orphan?' her heart tore at that question.

He looked away from her.

'tell me please…. Who am i?'

He cleared his throat. This was difficult. He had dealt with hard core business men and he never faltered. He couldn't lift his tongue before this girl.

'Please…' she knelt beside him holding both his hands in her small hand.

Jai looked at her woeful eyes and said, 'you had a father and he died few days back and there's any one left who can be called a family but there's a neighbor who cares for your well being…'

'I don't have anyone? My father died? No mother? No siblings?' she couldn't believe her greatest fear had become the reality of her life. Bani buried her head in his hand and cried.

I am an orphan?' she couldn't believe she was one. Now what was the use of regaining her memory there was no dear and near ones for her whom she can remember she had spent her life with . she was like a blank paper. Anything could be written as her fate from now on. God! She broke down holding his hand. Dai ma walked into the living room hearing her heart wrenching cry. Jai sent her back signaling with his head. He released his hand from her hold and patted her head. 'I am sorry Bani.'

The name sounded strange in her ears. She slowly moved away from him wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. She stood up and looked at him for a moment.

'I'll not trouble you anymore. I'll go away tomorrow. You have done enough for me.'

'No.. No Bani .. you can stay here till you feel better.' He said getting up from the settee.

'No.. I have given you only trouble I don't want to and there's ….. I don't want to be a burden.'

'We will talk about this when you are in good mind Bani. until then good night.' He moved past her to his room leaving her behind.

Jai was up in the morning he hurriedly got out of the bed and walked to the guest room. The door was closed. He stood for a moment and knocked on the door. There was no response. He knocked again.

'One minute..' she called out.

He breathed a sigh of relief. She came and opened the door wearing a turban on her head. She had taken a bath and changed into a salwar Khameez . her eyes looked sad. She looked at him.

When he did not respond she smiled and said, 'I won't leave without telling you..'

'I don't want you to leave now. Let the medicine course get over then you can do whatever you want and by the way where will you go?'

'I'll go to my village.' She said moving away from the door.

'And what will you do?'

'what does the villagers do? I'll also do that.' She said with a smile.

He smiled back and that was the first she saw him smile. He looked very handsome thought Bani.

'I can offer you a job Bani. will you accept my offer?'

She was shocked. She did not expect him to offer her a job and how will she work for him. She doesn't know anything or any idea about her education and if she did go to college and all would she be able to work in the firm. He is a big man. Highly qualified and owns business. She had learned about him that much. She would make a mess if she couldn't follow…

'where are you lost?'

'You are making a mistake I don't think I am qualified for the job you are offering me.'

'You are…. I have your certificates. You have done your college b com and went to learn computer…'

'You know about me more than I do… but still what if I make a mess of the job you give me?'

'my staff will assist you and don't be negative about all this. Try and see if you can do it or not. Then we will think about some alternative…'

'Okay… if I can't you should let me go… I do not want to be burden for anyone.. you have done enough..'

'Deal. Take rest for few days then we will start the job.. you can speak to Dr. Sharma about it on the phone.'

'I can leave here… I don't want ..'

'To be a burden.. no you are not a burden.. you will stay here till I say so no more arguments on that front…'

'Yes sir.'

'Good.' He left her to think over the new offer. Her life was taking a new turn.

Dai ma stayed at his house on his request till his guest remains with him. The lady agreed on his behalf. She served them breakfast. Bani noticed him using fork and knife where as she was comfortable using her hand. At first she did not know what to do she had pricked an omelet with the fork and it fell on the plate back. When she looked exasperatedly about her she saw him looking at her. Her face had gone red.

'You can use your hand. This habit I picked up outside home.'

When she frowned he continued. 'A convent bred.' He had continued eating and she left the fork and knife and used her hand. After breakfast he had called the doctor asked his opinion about offering her a job. The doctor gave him a green signal. He gave the phone to Bani and Doctor assured her everything will be fine.

Bani hardly slept the previous night. She was excited about her new job. It was in the morning she had shut her eyes. She was up early took shower and dressed in one of the best she had A magenta and white salwar khameez. She combed her hair had quick breakfast before Jai. Dai ma blessed her and asked why she having her food before him. She gave her a lame excuse.

Jai did not notice her absence at the breakfast table he was pre occupied with an issue in the office. He quickly had breakfast and Bani felt bad he did not ask for her. she over looked it soon. Went to the room and got a purse Rama had bought for her. she was at the door she saw him go out quickly Bani had to run after him to stop him.

'You are going without me?' she asked standing before him.

Jai looked at her apologetically. 'I am sorry I was little occupied. You know something at work.'

She stood hesitantly. 'Then it's okay I'll go with you tomorrow then.' She was little disheartened when she said it. He noticed her fallen face and said. "no.. it's okay.. come along…'

She nodded happily and followed him to the car. In the car both of them were occupied with their own thoughts.
