Chapter6
Bani was sitting on the bed lost in thought she had no idea what was in store for her. she heard a knock on the door. She went and opened the door. He was standing at the door.
'Masui and my di has come they want to see you Bani.'
She nodded and stepped out with trembling feet she followed him to the living room.
She saw two pairs of eyes boring into her as she reached the living room. She looked at them uncertainly. She clasped her hands and looked at them.
The older lady's eyes had warmth but the younger one's looked hard on her.
'You are Bani?'
She nodded. 'come and sit down with me dear.' Said Masui. Bani went to sit with her she threw him a look. She did not find any assurance from him he looked at her like his sister had looked at her.
'Jai told me everything dear and we feel awful about it. I was telling him whatever the reason must be, it's not right for a woman to stay with a man alone in a house.'
Bani's face reddened. She did not look at anyone. 'I er told him I would like to move out I can take care of myself. He has done so much I don' t want to burden him.'
'There brother she feels the same then what's your problem?' asked Jigyasa. Jai shut her up with his look.
'Masui I told you about her condition let the doctor return from his vacation we will find a place for her.'
"Alright if you say so. Jai I am worried about people talking so I have decided to stay here for time being.' Said Mausi.
Jai smiled.
'But Mausi you can't do that to me. I can't handle the house without you.' Chided Jigyasa.
'You learn without me Jigyasa it's high time and now munna needs me more than you .' she turned to Jai. 'Tell your guard to get my things from the car.'
Jai nodded and then smiled at Jigyasa. Jigyasa turned her face in anger. 'This is not fare.'
Jigyasa stayed till dinner. Bani helped dai ma in the kitchen with dinner. She made her specialties for his family. Mausi praised the food. Jigyasa nodded Jai looked up. Bani ate silently. Jigyasa left the house after dinner. She had come to say many things to the girl who was taking advantage of her brother's generosity. She couldn't look at her and say things she wanted to. She had noticed Bani kept her away from her brother or her family.

Mausi watched Bani when she was with her. the girl had good manners she did not talk unnecessarily. She kept away from Jai spoke only needed she would retire to her room or she would help dai ma. Mausi started to have feeling for the petite girl. Her gaze followed Bani as she roamed around the house arranging fresh flowers cleaning the dust. Taking care of mausi . she always asked if she needed anything before retiring to bed. The days went by. Bani got busy with her office work. Radhika took her out for shopping on Jai's request took her to buy clothes for her. Bani refused to buy anything. She did not want to take advantage of his kindness. She would buy them when she would receive her pay. Finally Radhika turned up buying cloths for self.
The next day she complained to Jai. "You will have to pay for my cloths now. Your Bani refused to buy anything. I felt bad for the sales man I ended buying. That was not in my budget Walia I need a raise.'
'Shut up and go back to work.' He sent her back to her desk.
For some reason addressing Bani as your Bani made him smile. He has to do something. He will make his mausi buy for her. she has pride may be she will not refuse mausi. Jai was tired of seeing her in the same cloths. It was high time she bought something for her.
As the days passed by Jai noticed Bani seldom went with him. Either she left early from home to work or she would be missing when he got ready to go. On the return too she would slip away before he noticed her. Was she making conscious effort to stay away from him. for some reason he did not like it. she was becoming a habit for him and he did not like change in habits.
It was in the evening he had returned home tired from a meeting. The meeting took more time than he had intended.
He parked the car in the porch and walked into the house. He heard a song coming from the back of the house. May be a radio he had thought but there was no music. His mausi was nowhere in sight. Dai ma usually arrived as he stepped in with tea she did not seem to come. The song continued and he followed the sound. Suddenly the song stopped and he stopped then he heard a voice saying.. 'Abh thum log gao mausi aap bhi okay… 1 2 3.. gao… Jai heard them chorus the song. He walked to the kitchen and stood before it. his mausi dai ma and the guard was singing along with her. she was standing in the centre of the kitchen with the rolling pin in hand making action with her hand and singing along with them. her face was radiant with a smile her hair fallen in lock from her shoulder. She stopped suddenly looking at him the rolling pin fell from her hand and landed on her feet hurting her toe. She did not flinch she stared at him. the gang stopped and followed her gaze.
'Munna… sorry baba abhi layi chai.' Said dai ma. Masui looked at him with a huge smile. Bani slowly slipped back taking the rolling pin from the floor.
'What's happening here? Aur Ramu kaka aap yahan?' he looked at the guard. The guard bent his head left the kitchen through the back door.
Jai's gaze followed Bani. she cleverly moved away from his sight. Mausi took his sleeve and propelled him to the living room. 'We were having little fun munna.. this is not your office it's a house. 4 walls does not make a building a house you need to make it..'
'Yeah, yeah..'
'Kaisa raha din?'
'Good…' Jai knew Mausi wanted to tell him something. 'you wanted to say something Mausi?' he asked her with a mischievous smile.
''Han.. thum beto..' she pulled him on the settee and sat with him.
'I'll ask you a straight forward question Jai. When do you intent to get married?'
He shook his head with exasperation.
'Don't you shake your head boy. How long do you think we have to wait for that occasion? You tell me about the girl you wanted to get married or we will select for you?'
'Aisa ghazab math karna mausi.'
'then? Have you anyone in mind?' she asked eagerly.
He did not answer. He did not think about marriage he was too busy to find a place in the business world.
'Munna we have given you enough time. You decide fast or we will take up the task of getting you married.'
Jai nodded. Dai ma came with tea . he took the tea from her and got up. 'I'll freshen up mausi. Aap jake gana gayien…..'
'Munna thum bhi na.' mausi laughed along with dai ma.

Bani quietly joined them for dinner she felt very awkward. Jai looked at her and said, 'how did you get back home? Radhika told me you left little late.'
Bani knew it was casual talk. 'I took a rickshaw. I am fine now and I know about the place.'
'hm..'
'Dr. Sharma called in the evening. He wanted me to meet him tomorrow.'
'Okay. I am little busy but I'll try to be there.'
'No…' she raised her sound then lowered feeling bit embarrassed. 'I can manage don't make me feel handicapped.'
Masui looked from her to munna. 'Munna she will take care thum pareshan math ho.'
Bani's cheeks reddened. She knew as the days progressed she was getting attached to him. she was taking conscious effort to stay away from him as possible. She did not want to form a tie with him that would be too difficult to break. As it was she was … she was what? Bani choked at the thought.
Masui patted her head as he looked on.

Chapter 7
Bani met Dr. Sharma. He gave her a clear chit. She was fine and healthy. And there was a possibility she could regain her memory back in time. She had mentioned to him there were times she remembered things vaguely about her home and things.
Jai called the doctor as she left his clinic. The doctor assured him she was fine. Jai knew next thing she would convince him she can take care of her and would like to stay in a hostel.
At dinner Bani started the topic about her meeting with the doctor. Mausi listened to her carefully. 'He told me I am fine. Now you can ..' she did not know what to say. She looked at Mausi for help. 'that he need not have to worry about you right.'
Bani nodded not looking at him. 'I spoke to Radhika about a bed space in the hostel she was in.'
'Al right Bani if that's what you want.'
She did not comment she finished her food. The dinner went silently. Bani helped dai ma and mausi with the dishes. She wanted to speak to him before she left she had told Radhika she would move in with her the next day. she waited for a chance to talk to him.
Masui saw her linger in the living room. 'what happened beti? Do you want to talk to him?'
'Han mausi may I?'
'Han kyon nahin? He is at his study.'
She walked to his study and knocked on the door. He was sitting behind the desk looking at the mail. He looked up as she walked in.
'Yes Bani …'
She had no idea what to say. She had come here to thank him for what he had done for her and she wanted to tell him she would move out tomorrow but….'
'Tell me..' he closed the laptop and got up.
'I'll be moving out tomorrow….' She saw his face form in to a scowl. 'you have done so much for me thank you I don' t want to burden you more I….'
'Why is it important for you to move out so soon?'
'Soon? I have been here for eternity. How long I'll stay… and there's something else like mausi said it isn't right for me to stay here it was your kindness and I couldn't refuse it that time because I too felt I couldn't cop without anyone. I am feeling better now and I don't want to tarnish your image because of me you are a good man..' her cheeks reddened at the last word.
'How come my image will be tarnished?' he knew the answer but just wanted to hear from her.
She looked away embarrassed.
'Oh okay as you wish and I hope you will take care.'
She nodded. Her eyes filled for no reason she backed away.
Bani….' he called walking swiftly towards her surprising her he took her in an embrace and left her immediately. She was surprised at his action. She opened the door and left him staring at the closed door.

Going away was very painful thought Bani. It was not easy as she thought. She packed her bag. She had brought from the market with Radhika. She had received her pay from the office. She bought 3 salwar khameezes on Radhika's insistence. Teasing her boss and was tired of seeing her wearing the same thing and making Bani blush. She packed her bag, took it out side she bid Mausi and dai ma farewell. She looked for Jai who was absent after breakfast. Mauis saw her and said, 'If you are looking for Jai he won't come out to say bye beta. He hates farewell. Bani left his house carrying her bag looking back at the house she lived she bid bye to the guard and Gardner and got into the rickshaw the guard had hired for her.
Jai refused to come out of the study. He hated farewells and he never felt comfortable about it.

Radhika was waiting for her impatiently. 'Where have you been Bani I am getting late for work.'
'sorry Radhika…'
'you look sad Bani is everything alright?'
'hm… it was just difficult to leave you know…'
'Han painful it will be now where you will get to live with the mighty boss you will miss seeing him?' teased Radhika.
Bani made a face. Radhika took her to the room they were supposed to share took her around introduced to some of the women and the warden. The warden recited rules and regulation of the hostel. It was almost 12 pm they reached office. The boss was out.
Bani hardly saw him after she left the house. He had gone for business trip and was busy with meetings and stuff. A week later she saw him in the office. Bani smiled at him as he passed her to his office. He looked at her without any acknowledgment. Bani felt bad. That was it. he had enough of taking care of her. Then she scolded her for thinking pettishly. It was her idea to jump out of the house.

Jai had put an investigation on Nishikant's case. Mahesh had called him up saying they have got evidence on Ganesh Babu the factory manager in Bade Gaon.
By afternoon Jai got full report on the guy. It was him who had embezzled the funds and the real culprit, he had trapped Nishikant. Jai felt bad they had been little haste in taking decision regarding Nishikant. They had suspended him and now he was no more. He felt a pang of guilt. He had kept the truth from Bani that her father was an employee with the Walia. He prayed to God that he was not responsible for his heart attack and sudden death.
He just saw her in the reception and god only knew how much he missed her at home. She remained out of his sight but made her presence felt by doing little things in the house. Mausi too seemed to be missing her. dai ma had only things to say about her. He would go and tell her hello. It was rude of him to look through her. He got up from his seat and walked to Radhika's cabin. He heard laughter in the room . He opened the room and saw His finance staff Rohan chatting with Bani. They were laughing about something the site clicked a raw nerve in him. he snapped. "Rohan no work?'
'Yes sir I have come to give a file to Radhika…'
'Where's Radhika? He asked looking around.
'She is .. she has …' Bani did not have anything to say. Radhika has gone to wash room and…
Jai looked at her stammer. He turned his attention on Rohan. 'you finished your work here?'
'Yes sir..' he left hurriedly. Jai turned to Bani. she looked like a mouse.
'relax.. yeh sab karna padtha hein..' he said with a smile. Bani heaved a sigh.
'How are you doing?'
'I am fine.'
'How's the job here?'
'You tell me am I doing fine?' she asked.
He nodded. Radhika tells me you are a fast learner.. And Bani every one misses you at home visit them when you get time.'
'Yes.. how's mausi and dai ma?'
'Fine…' he did not have anything else to say he turned to the door Radhika walked in she stopped as she spotted him. 'Boss …'
'where have you been ? seat se kahan gayab hojathe ho? Kam vam sabh khatham hogya kya?' he asked in mock seriousness.
'Kyon? Muje sack karne ki soch rahi ho?'
'Shayad.' Saying that he left.
Radhika turned to Bani 'your guardian sometimes give me jitters. Patha nahin kabh mera patha khat jayein.'
'Aisa kuch nahin hoga he is good man.'
'Oh hooooooooo… yeh thum hein patha hoga kyon ki thum hi..'
'Kya mathlab?' she asked hesitantly.
'kuch nahin budhu.. who admi yahan bas thum se bath karne keliyein ayein the..baki sab dikhava tha?'
'Nahin.'
'Han….'
How do you know?'
'He never comes in this room mere budhu mein yehan 5 sal se hoon.'
'Rubbish.'
Radhika shrugged if you want believe then so be it.'
Bani did not continue the subject. Was Radhika right? He came to talk to her?
