As in every show based on Mahabharata ever, Karna is rejected by Drona in this one too. Here are the citations from two acclaimed versions that prove that Karna was indeed Drona's student.

KMG translation:-

And, O bull of the Bharata race, many other princes also flocked to that best of Brahmanas for instruction in arms. The Vrishnis and the Andhakas, and princes from various lands, and the (adopted) son of Radha of the Suta caste, (Karna), all became pupils of Drona.

Bibek Debroy's translation of BORI CE pg. 131:-

Other Princes also came to Drona, supreme among Bramhanas, to learn the use of arms-The Vrishnis, the Andhakas, Kings from many countries and Radheya,the son of the suta.

Yes, as per Mahabharata, Karna was a student of Drone. The rejection came later when he wanted to learn Brahmastra, and so went to Parshuram for advanced weaponry.

The complete denial of Karna by Drone from the beginning is shown by Kavita Kane in Karna's Wife novel. The CVs are following the book here, coz it helps to make the story more dramatic and fetch more sympathy for the protagonist.
