Marathi actress Pallavi Subhash is Ekta's new find , Aug. 17 (UNI): Marathi television actress Pallavi Subhash is Ekta Kapoor's new find on prime time with her new serial "Karam Apna Apna" which goes on this month air on Star Plus.

Star Plus will introduce its new prime time star Gauri (played by Pallavi Subhash) in the forthcoming serial of the channel with Balaji Television starting August 29 at 2130 hrs.

A new member and an addition to the Star Parivaar, the promising young and talented Pallavi Subhash will play the lead in the show.

Before being spotted by Ekta, the dimpled actress featured in two Marathi daily soaps "Char Diwas Sasuche" on ETV Marathi and "Adhuri Ek Kahani" on Zee Marathi.

An all new concept, "Karam Apnaa Apnaa" promises to be a show with a difference from the Balaji Telefilms stable. With its simple narrative, it vows to touch many a hearts and become a part and parcel of the viewers' life, soon after its launch, the channel said in a press release.

With the impressive ensemble of seasoned and popular faces of television in its line-up, the cast of the show includes Roopa Ganguly, last seen as "Draupadi" on television's path-breaking and biggest historical series of its time, Mahabharata, cricketer-turned-actor Salil Ankola, Apara Mehta (Savita from Kyunki), Sumeet Sachdev (Gautam from Kyunki), Geetanjali Tikekar (Apo*na from Kasautii) and Delnaaz Paul to name a few.

It is a story of a middle class, likeable and non-ambitious character "Gauri" who hails from Kolkata and puts her family's interest before anything else in life. "Karam Apnaa Apnaa" will be told in a simple format, as its focus remains on the central character.

Gauri's only dream is to live a simple, happy married life with her husband and her kids, and as she reaches to the threshold of realizing this by getting married to her fianc, Shashank, her life takes on a different journey all together, on a path she had never imagined to walk.

Deepak Segal, ex VP Content of STAR India said "Star plus has been successful in entertaining the audiences, continuously for the past six years. With the launch of 'Karam Apnaa Apnaa', we further aim to consolidate our leadership in the prime-time slot and stay on, with our single-minded endeavour to provide compelling entertainment and content for the viewers."

Produced by Balaji Telefilms, the show is conceptualized by Ekta Kapoor. The screenplay is by Mahesh Pandey and Aniruddh Pathak, the dialogues are from Brijmohan, and the show's directed by Anil V Kumar.

First, it was plain-Jane Prachi Desai. Then came the mind-blowing Mouni Roy. Now it seems to be time for another Ekta Kapoor discovery -- the promising Pallavi Subhash.

While both Prachi and Mouni were newbies in TV, Pallavi has been around for some time on Marathi TV. Playing the lead role in the new show Karam Apnaa Apnaa, Pallavi will share the screen with Roopa Ganguly, (Draupadi Mahabharata) Salil Ankola, Apara Mehta (Savita from Kyunki...), Sumeet Sachdev (Gautam from Kyunki) and Geetanjali Tikekar (Apo*na from Kasauti).

Pallavi will play Gauri -- a loveable middle class girl from Kolkata, who puts her family's interest before anything else in life.

Here's more dope on Karam Apna Apna. After Nach Baliye, Rajiv and Delnaz Paul are all set to play couple on television. The lovey-dovey couple is back on screen, for a change playing their real-life role in reel life. They are paired opposite each other for the first time in Karam Apna Apna.

As Rajiv says, "Delnaz and I worked together the last time in a serial called Parivartan where we shot together for just two days. After Nach Baliye, people wanted to see us together and this offer was too good to resist."

Any Balaji offer is, right?

Basic instinct

She has popped more eyeballs on television than most television producers can lay claim to. Critics follow her every venture, but nobody can ignore
Ekta Kapoor. The soap queen plots with Mathures Paul

The world Ekta Kapoor creates on screen is fantastical. Her characters, at times, conniving. The women manipulative. The soaps, not at all inspired by the West. On the contrary, they can teach directors in the West a lesson or two. Kapoor has grown up on a healthy dose of television in an era less known for glitzy sets and more for acting skills. Today, she is a household name, every housewife's companion during luncheon and television's only queen. Quite particular about her looks, she is not at all a fan of Jeetendra when it comes to dressing up! And she is different from her brother Tusshar, who believes in making a name for himself in films. It was her illustrious father who supported Ekta, both financially and as a concerned parent, in her endeavours. Success came in the form of Hum Paanch, which changed her future completely. And the production house synonymous with boo-hoo-hoo and I-will-get-you productions, Balaji Telefilms was born. Ekta has made the small screen a lucrative field for countless upcoming stars and stars of yesteryears. However important a name she maybe in the industry, Kapoor is a down-to-earth person who is never tired to wear a smile even after working 20 hours a day.
"It's sheer instinct," she says as to how characters jump out of her creative thinking process. "We (members of the creative team) discuss the emotions and reactions of television viewers. Kasauti… was about cursed love, Kahani… has an idealistic plot in which people are good and in Kyunki… there was a role reversal. While watching Kyunki… a mother-in-law can remember her in-law."
Her latest effort is Karam Apna Apna ~ the story of a simple girl. "She is the third angle of a tri-angle." The serial, which Star Plus will air on 29 August, is the story of a middle-class girl, Gauri, who hails from Kolkata. Her ambition is to lead a simple life complete with children and husband. But when she is about to realise her dream by marrying her fianc, Shashank, life takes a different turn. The serial's first few episodes have been shot in Kolkata around Victoria Memorial, on the banks of the Hooghly, Howrah Bridge and so on.
"Kolkata is such a romantic city. It makes you feel at home. The laid-back nature makes you read a book or do nothing. The city has always appeared in my shows. This time the backdrop is the city. When I visit the city, my only craving is for sandesh. I live to eat! Since I am not Bengali, my view of the city will be different and that's what is presented in the show."
She is also open to experimenting with all kinds of plots for her films and serials. "I don't believe in moral policing. As long a plot does not show things in a bad light or is cheap, I don't mind working on it. In my films I don't mind being bohemian."
Ekta is working on a reality show to be aired soon. "This is uncharted territory. Nothing has been finalised and I will be endorsing a spiritual product. It will have my face on the cover." So, that tilak on her forehead is for making a style statement? "Definitely not. I apply the tikka because of my beliefs. Some consider it a style statement… I am not a conformist, just spiritual."
And about the men in her serials? "People like bad boys. Men are best when they are bad. Bad men are good!"

Balaji all set with its new soap

Submitted by Deeksha on Tue, 2006-08-29 03:33. TV

The cricketer turned actor Salil Ankola will be seen in the role of a father in Ekta Kapoor's new prime time show.

Balaji is all set to deliver its new baby 'Karam Apna Apna'. The much publicized and most awaited prime time show will be telecasted from 29 August at 9.30 pm on Star Plus.

The soap not only boasts of a well outlined story line, but also a huge star cast of talented actors combined with fresh faces. The cast comprises of Apara Mehta, Roopa Ganguly, Salil Ankola, Iqbal Khan, Geetanjli Tikekar, Sumeet Sachdev, real life couple Rajiv and Delnaaz Paul, Achint Kaur, Jaya Bhattacharya, Karan Patel and new face, Pallavi Subhash who plays the protagonist.

Gauri (Pallavi Subhash), the middle class, non ambitious Kolkatta girl will play the key role in the soap. The story will orbit around her. The theme deals with Gauri's life and the trials she faces after coming in contact with three families- the Chatterjee's - her paternal home, the Kapoor's - her future in-laws and the Tandon's - friend of the Kapoor's.

The cricketer turned actor Salil Ankola will be seen in the role of a father in Ekta Kapoor's new prime time show.

In every serial, Ekta introduces a new face and this
time luck favoured Pallavi Shubhash, who was earlier seen in ZEE TV's 'Tumhari Disha'. The elated actress said that it is a pleasure to get associated with the biggest production house. She said that she has just started taking the baby steps and is way behind Tulsi and Parvati. Pallavi is elated to bag the role of Gauri, whom she says is just like her.

Post the death of her character; Savita Virani in 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi', Apara Mehta will stage her comeback with Balaji Telefilms in 'Karam Apna Apna'. Apara feels great to be a part of Balaji again. She will be seen playing the role of Krishna Kapoor who is lovingly called dadi. Krishna is a loud and vivacious character. People are often seen saying bad things behind the back and become all goody goody when confronted in the front. However, Ksishna will be seen doing the reverse of this.

Salil Ankola will be seen for the first time in a Balaji soap and this is his maiden experience. The cricketer turned actor will be seen in the role of a father which seems to be interesting. He is penciled for the role of Mahen Kapoor, the eldest son of the family, who is very self centered. His sole aim is to earn fame, for which he can go to any length and use anyone as pawn. Money, fame and position is all that matters to him. Whereas Relationships and values are not present in his dictionary.

Geetanjali Tikekar or Aparna from 'Kasautii Zindagii Kay' will be again seen in as a selfish character. However, Maya, the character she is portraying, will have shades of grey and will not be outright vampish. Even a pinch of humour is added to her new role.

The real life couple Rajiv and Delnaaz Paul will be seen acting together for the first time. Rajiv Paul's association with Balaji goes quite long back. The negative role in 'Kahanii Ghar Ghar Kii' proved to be a launchpad for his career. In 'Karam Apna Apna', he will have a positive character. Delnaaz is extremely jubilant for getting associated with Balaji. Not only this, the other reason for her happiness is that she will get to work with her husband, which had been her dream.

Sumeet Sachdeva will play the character of Sashank, an accountant with Mahen Kapoor. Actor Karan patel will be seen playing an intense character of Vivan Kapoor. It seems that Ekta is quite impressed with him as it is his seventh serial with Balaji.

Besides Pallavi, a few other fresh faces have also found a place. In 'Karam Apna Apna'....Rahul Jagtiani (runner up of Gladrags model hunt) is zeroed in to play son to Salil Ankola. Similarly Shriya Bisht (a newcomer from the corporate world) and Karan Kapoor (who has some films to his credit) will play daughter and son of Roopa Ganguly respectively.

Phew…what a huge star cast! The soap seems quite promising and will surely fetch more praises for Balaji.

Ek baar phir...

Once again, Amit Tandon has lost his pie to Iqbal Khan. In Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai, Tandon was first supposed to do Angad's role, which eventually went to Iqbal. It has now happened in Karam Apna Apna. Says Amit, "Whatever decisions are taken by Ekta Kapoor are never wrong.

She knows television the best. Maybe she wants to establish my Manthan character in Kyunki... more, that's why I am not doing Karam Apna Apna." Amit made his first splash on television with Indian Idol

Gomzi rescued by a rickshaw-wala!

Sumeet Sachdev aka Gomzi of Kyunkii... had an unusual experience while shooting for Balaji's new soap Karam Apna Apna in Kolkata. The actor was touring Kolkata after finishing his shooting schedules.

He visited the Victoria Memorial and the Indian Museum. However, while he was at the museum, the heavy downpour outside had led to water-logging on the roads. "When I tried to come out, the water was at least knee-deep. The torrential rains continued and I was stranded for a couple of hours. I checked out the alternative exit doors of the museum, but all the streets were water-logged," he says.

Sumeet then decided to wait at one of the gates and started shouting for help to the taxi drivers. "The roads were flooded with water at Park Street, and I was shouting from quite a distance. I guess that's why nobody could hear me. I wished for an angel to come to my rescue," he says.

Finally, a lone rickshaw-puller heard his screams. "He was the only man to hear my voice and despite the knee-deep water, he came to help me. I never thought I would board a hand-pulled rickshaw one day as I think it's inhuman. But, then I had no alternative and took the ride," says Sumeet.

The actor was surprised that the richshaw-puller was rather proud and happy about his profession. "During the drive, I interviewed him and shot a video of him on my cell phone. His name was Mohammad Anis. He was 37 years old and has been in the profession for 15 years," he adds.

At the end of the ride, Sumeet paid Anis ten times the remuneration and the latter was more than happy for it. Did the rickshaw-puller recognise the actor? "No. Maybe he had no access to TV," says Sumeet.

Miracles have occurred in in my life

There are times in all our lives, when we desire the need for divine intervention; times, when life refuses to acknowledge the seemingly obvious and decides to take refuge in a world that is far away from ours. A world that gives the body and mind the spiritual healing that it yearns for. We, at Telly Chakkar.com decided to delve deeper into the lives of our favourite stars and know a little about their lives beyond the obvious.

Achint Kaur started her acting career with Banegi Apni Baat as a drug-addict
and a product of a broken home. In real life too she comes from a broken home (her parents divorced when she was just one-and-half) but she's in no way like her on-screen character as she led a sheltered life with the support of her grandparents. Her roles in serials like Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki have established her as an actor worth reckoning. She has also acted in films like Julie and is presently being seen as the protagonist's (Iqbal Khan) mother in Balaji Telefilms' Karam Apnaa Apnaa on Star Plus.
"I even abuse God if I have to"
Yes, I believe in God but I don't follow rituals. I wish him Goodmorning and Goodnight, besides lighting the agarbatti everyday. I talk to God in my own way and tell him everything and if I am angry, I even abuse Him. I visit temples during festivals or whenever I am travelling I make it a point to visit the famous temple if there happens to be one.
"I told my Mom to have a boyfriend"
Since childhood, nothing was hidden from me about my parents' divorce. I used to tell my mother to have a boyfriend but she was this quiet, submissive type and she never re-married. But, I am very different from her and I am my own person. I only follow the diktats of my mind and conscience.
"I am a single parent"
Being a divorcee myself I am a single parent to my son Pritanjan. Despite Mohan Kapoor's presence in my life, I still call myself a single parent and all my son's needs are handled by me alone. As I never met my father till I was 25 years old, I didn't want history to repeat itself. So, I allow my son to meet his dad whenever he wants. When I was new in this industry, there were a lot of restrictions because my son was too small and I could not work beyond certain timings. It's just after he grew up a little that I could take up more serials and devote my time to my career. Since the past three months, my mom has come to stay with me permanently and that seems to be quite a relief to me.
"I have seen quite a few miracles"
Once when I was admitted in an army hospital, there was a lady with a small child on the next bed. When the child cried, she wouldn't move or attend to it and when I asked if she was alright, she said she was very weak and did not have anyone to take care of them. So, I helped her with taking care of the child.

Then after two years, when I was three months pregnant, I was admitted to a hospital. There were some complication developed and the child had to be aborted. I was administered an injection, after which I started bleeding profusely in the night. The buzzer in my room was not working and I was screaming and shouting for help but no one heard me. At midnight when the duty of nurses changed, a nurse opened my room door and entered. This was the same lady whom I had helped a couple of years back. She was shocked to see my state and immediately called the doctor and took good care of me till I recovered. She was God-send.
"I keep myself mentally active"
When I am depressed, I prefer to travel to some destination or do a womanly thing like shopping. Basically I keep myself mentally active so that I don't fall a victim to depressive moods. Whatever happens, happens for a reason. I believe what goes around, comes around!

I'm biased towards women'
Confesses telly queen EKTAA KAPOOR as she talks to Pratim D. Gupta about everything from vibes to voids and sandesh to spirituality during a trip to the city

It is difficult to spot Ektaa Kapoor in a crowd. In a simple salwar-kurta, the only thing striking about her is the red headband keeping her tresses under control as she walks down the lobby of the Oberoi Grand on Saturday night. It's only when you look at her hand that you know that here indeed is the Balaji queen. Five rings of different colours rooted to the fingers of the right hand. Pan left and you can see a series of threads and strings of beads lining her wrist — red, black, rudraksha… you name it and it's there.

But you ask the 30-year-old Mother of the Great Indian Soap Opera about her spirituality and all she says: "I believe in vibes." Vibes that lead to running a software empire which has fetched more TRPs in the last six years than the India-Pakistan ODIs in the same period. And till the other day, Ektaa was just another adolescent girl watching TV 24/7.

"I was, am and always will be a TV ka kira," she smiles. "I became a television producer because I just love watching TV. Even today, I keep watching it all day long. Among my shows, I watch Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahin to Hoga, Kasamh Se, Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka and Kasauti Zindagi Kay. Of the others, I watch Viraasat, Mamta and Tumhari Disha."

It was during watching one of the episodes of Tumhari Disha that Ektaa found her new prime-time girl Pallavi Subhash, Karam Apna Apna's Gauri. Just like she had found her Tulsi, her Parvati, her Prerna, her Bani, her Nimmo… "I don't know how I do it," she wonders with a child-like innocence. "I just look for a smile that will light up people's homes. I do not look for a sex bomb. She should just be able to warm up my heart."

But how come in the middle of the thousands of hours of software that she has produced, Ektaa Kapoor hasn't made a male-oriented story? "I strictly believe that women rule the remote control at home," she announces. "You can say I am totally biased towards women. I have tried but I just can't make a man's story. I cannot make a Prithviraj Chauhan. If I have to work on a male-dominated subject, I would rather make a film because that's what they want to see, more than television."

Films are one area where Ektaa wants to improve her record after disastrous debacles like Kuch To Hai, Krishna Cottage and Koi Aap Sa. "After Kya Kool Hai Hum, you can say, now I am happy," she says. "I have a whole lot of movies lined up. There's Kya Kool Part 2, a romantic comedy with Neeraj Vora (Phir Hera Pheri), a film with Rohit Shetty (Golmaal), one with Abbas Mustan and even one with Sudhir Mishra. I am also co-producing Apoorva Lakhia's Shootout At Lokhandwala with Sanjay Gupta's company."

But it is the small screen where Ektaa has complete creative control, though she adds that she had very little inputs in the Kamlesh Pandey-ideated Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasman, her first co-production with friend and find Smriti Irani.

And just like the K-King of the big screen Karan Johar turned real with Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, the K-Queen of the small screen is turning real with her new show Karam Apna Apna. If many of her earlier serials had Bengali families looking very un-Bengali, this new Balaji production is actually being shot in Calcutta. "You can say there is a slant towards capturing an ambience," she says, not happy with the word "real". "See I am not here to make 'different' shows. Nobody really does. I will keep making serials where the common middle-class man can identify with the characters' problems."

So, Karam Apna Apna is "a Cinderella story going wrong". Explains Ektaa: "A famous saying goes, 'Everyone should dream because dreams come true but everyone should be careful to dream because dreams come true.' It's about this middle-class girl who is married into a big family and while that's what she wanted, she couldn't imagine the problems that come with such a wish fulfilment."

While she has made sure that her favourite Ma Durga is in the serial, Ektaa went to Kalighat on Sunday morning for a local round of divine intervention. She also promised to pick up sandesh from a sweet shop because that's one thing for which she "can give up anything".

Maybe not her vibes!

Big leap to Bollywood

By HT
Friday August 25, 03:17 PM

Wondering what Vinay Jain (Aryan) of Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin is doing these days? After Remix and Jassi and #8230; got over, life became very boring for him. As Vinay says, "I didn't know what to do." But as luck would have it, he was signed by soap queen Ekta Kapoor for her new serial Karam Apna Apna.

"I play an interesting role in Karam and #8230;but can't reveal much about it," he said. However, the talented actor has found another love in life - theatre. In town for Raell Padmasee's Two to Tango, Vinay seemed quite thrilled about his new calling. "No doubt, theatre is more challenging than acting in films as there is no scope for retakes here."

In October he'll do another play Shararat with Shweta Tiwari. So is he happy? "Of course," he says, "I'm more than happy." Reason? "My TV career is going great guns and I've got good films lined up. There is Chinni Kum with Amitabh Bachchan and Gandhi My Father with Akshaye Khanna releasing this year." Someone's career is surely on a roll.
