Shiv Ki Gauri

Chapter 6

"5 minutes Shiv!, 5 minuets KARTE KARTE EK GHANTA HOGAYA, KITNI DER LAGTI HAI…..JALDI KARO!!!"

Prateek stands in the middle of Kapoor house corridor pounding his fists at Shiv's bedroom door.

"Kya kar rahe ho mujhe toe kuch samaj nahi ara hai… muje lakta tha ke sirf ladeekya itni deer lagatee hai…but you shiv kapoor…..!"

"Ok you can come in now" Shiv shouts from inside his room in a deadly relaxed tone like he was oblivious to the fact that his friend was going bright pink red and god knows what other colour with frustration.

Prateek walks into the room, to see Shiv standing in front of the mirror adjusting his shoal around his neck and smiling at how stressed Prateek's irritation.

Shiv: "Shaadhi meri hai, why are you getting so stressed, chill look frustration se tumara chera pink hogaya hai….Shiv looks at Prateek in the mirror who is standing behind him and smiles teasingly. "Waise it complements your suit nicely."

Shiv smirks at the mirror while fiddling with his hair.

"Shut up shiv yey...stress ki vaje na tum ho…waise bhi I think I look quite good and for your information your wife to be Gauri picked out this suit."

Prateek was wearing a bright pink magenta shirvani with a light blue shoal hanging around his neck.

Prateek: "kya mirror mein dekh rahe ho! Now come on lets go… sab niche intazaar kar rahe hoge…vaise bhi aur intazaar karaya toe tumari dadi muje mardalegi!!!!!"

Shiv: "ok ready..." Shiv turns around to face Prateek all dressed up ready looking deadly handsome in a glowing white sherwani lightly embroidered with collar, white shoal neatly wrapped round his neck and draped down. The white complemented his skin tone extremely well and added a glow to his cheeks as he smiled.

Shiv: "Let's go…"

Shiv and Prateek walk out into the corridor and head for the staircase.

Shiv: "Prateek… tume lagta hai…ke shaadhi se phele muje gauri se baat karna cahyeiye?"

Prateek: Too late now…look down there, tumhe lagta hai ke yey saab tumhe gauri se milne denge…

Shiv and Prateek were standing at the top of the staircase when Shiv looks down the stair case to see an army of people crowded around the mandap (alter) amongst them his family, and friends not to mention business associates who he didn't remember inviting. The scene from where they were standing was larger than life.

Shiv: yey saab???? Shiv looked worried… "Gauri kaha hai?" shiv's eyes start to search for gauri in the crowd. He comes across everyone but gauri, his dad who looked incredibly happy walking around greeting guests, dadaji and alok who were dancing and god knows how many other relatives who randomly happened to be there but Gauri was no where to be seen.

Prateek: "Kya dekh rahe ho…it's no use …gauri yaha nahi hai." Prateek was just about finish when dadi comes runshing up the stairs.

Dadi: "shiv acha tum agaye…Pandit ji tumhe bularahe hai chalo" dadi drags shiv away downstairs without giving him a chance to speak. "Tum yaha bhetho." She takes shiv to the mandap and sits him down in front of the havan kund.

Dadi: "yey pandit ji hai" dadi Introduced shiv to the pandit who was sitting on the left of shiv. It was obvious that dadi was extremely happy as well as extremely excited. Her smile said it all and having noticed this Shiv thought it best not worry her by asking about gauri…Prateek was right it was too late. He would just have to hope that Gauri was happy with what was happening and thinking about It there was no point…thinking about it Shiv was not going to change his mind about marrying Gauri even if she wanted otherwise…the promise he made to his dad he would fulfil it at any cost.

After confirming this with himself Shiv drops his thoughts and smiles at panditji who was endlessly smiling at Shiv, god knows why he looked like he was even happier than Shiv himself. Actually looking around Shiv noticed that everyone looked excited, big smiles on every single persons face. Shiv was happy and felt content seeing his dad and family so happy. Looking around he saw endless colour everyone was dressed up in bright colours Shiv began to think he was a little underdressed. There was an ongoing hiss of voices all around all, all either enthusiastic, over the top excited or stressed. Shiv could hear dadaji and dadi behind him:

Dada: "Dekye Krishnaji…saab kuch theek say tayar kiya hai naa…koi garbar nahi honi chahyey."

Dadi: "Aap fikar maat kijeeye saabkuch teekh hai."

Dada: "Waise mein toe aaj bohot kush hu."

Dadi: "Aur muje aapko itna khush dekh kar kushi hai."

Dada: "Kya baat hai Krishnaji….aaj toe vake he…khubsurat hone ke saath saath kush bhi ho"

Dadi: "Aap kehena kya chate ho..mein kush nahi rehti…"

Dada: "Nahi…..woh"

Shiv earwigs from the front and cant help laughing in amusement at dada dadi's conversation.

Dadi sees shiv smirking and pulls his ear from behind.

Dadi: "tum kya has rahe ho…tume bhi pata chalega..aaj ke baad tum bhi dekhna."

Luckly for Shiv panditji interrupts just in time which saves Shiv from any more embarrassment.

Pandit: "Muhrat nikla jaraha hai …kanya ko bulaye !"

Dadi: "Ji Pandit Jee"

Dadi gets up from behind shiv where she and dadaji are sitting and walks off to go and call for gauri.

Meanwhile in the Kapoor house guestroom, Gauri and Alok are in the middle of a father and daughter conversation.

Alok: gauri beta..aaj se tum meri beti hi nahi balke kapoor parivar ki bahu kelaongi. Jo shik mene tumko de hai vo hamesha yaad rakhna. Aaj se shiv tumare leiye saab kuch hai..jo saman pyaar aur puja tum roz mandir mein shiv ji ki karti ho vohi…tume tumare pati shiv ke lieye karna hai. Yey hein ab tumara parivar hai. Alok's eyes start to water he removes his hands which were cupped around gauri's cheeks to wipe his tears.

Gauri: "baba……." Gauri was just about to console her dad just as emotionally as her dad had spoken to her when dadi walks in and is overwhelmed by how beautiful Gauri looks in her bridal dress. Gauri is sitting on the bed next to her dad all ready in a heavily embroidered vibrant red suit which glowed with the brightness of Gauri, she was wearing very simplistic gold jewellery around her neck and red bangles and very little make up but this simplicity made her look even more beautiful.

Without saying a word with her eyes fixed on Gauri and an overwhelmed look dadi walks up to Alok and Gauri. As Gauri sees dadi approaching she wipes away her tears and stands up. The expression on dadi's face portrayed exactly what she was thinking, thinking how pretty her daughter inlaw looked.. alok noticed this and smiled.

Dadi and Gauri were now at talking distance….

Dadi was so overwhelmed a film of tears became visible in her eyes: "kitni pyari lag rahi hai meri batchee" Dadi brought her hand up to her face..rubbed some kajal (eyeliner) off her eye and placed a dot under gauri's chin.

Dadi:"Kisi ke nazar na lage" she smiled at Gauri, who gave a slight smile which dadi could tell was accompanied by various other feelings from nervousness to fear.

Dadi looked towards alok, "aap fikar naa kare gauri toe hamari bete hi hai aur ab toe is ghar mein ane wali hai toe…bete sai bhi bar kar hai. Vaise mein aap ko bulane ayee thi..Panditji gauri ko bula rahe hai."

Alok: "hum chale", alok looks towards gauri and gauri nods a yes.

Dadi: " Ek minuit" Alok and Gauri look towards dadi in confusion..what was wrong.

Dadi smiles, reaches her hands up to gauri head which is covered by the ghoongat of the dress and pulls it down to cover gauri's face.

Dadi: "Ab theek hai….Hum Chale….?"

On the other hand in the mandap the pandit is getting impatient.

Panditji: "Kanya ko bulaye yajmaan…mahurat beeta jaraha hai"

Dadaji trys to calm the pandit: "woh lok abhi aarahe hoge pandit ji" whilst dadaji and mehen are busy Prateek takes advantage and comes to talk to shiv who has been sitting at the alter for a good 15 miniuites.

Prateek smiles at Shiv: "you ok shiv, sab kuch teek hai na" Shiv seemed fairly relaxed it seemed like everyone but him was stressed.

Shiv: "Yey im ok but… mera ek kaam karoge, "

Prateek: "yeh but nothing dogey..mein yahase tumko bhagane vala nahi hu." Prateek smiled.

Shiv: "no..no I think I've misplaced my phone" there was a sort of lost expression on Shiv's face "shayad mere room mein…"

Prateek: "phone ke saath kya karonge shiv, hoga kahi you can look for it later!" Prateek gave Shiv strange questioning looks as if to say why on earth you would need your phone whilst getting married.

Shiv: "will you just check please."

Prateek knew there was no use arguing with Shiv it would be better to do as he says: ok ok…I'll go. Just as Prateek is about to leave Gauri walks in with her dad all eyes are on Gauri so nobody notices the whispering between Prateek and Shiv.

Prateek whispers from behind shiv: "dekho don't worry..tum shaadhi pein dhayan do"

Shiv: "thanks" Prateek leaves.

Gauri walks into the mandap as instructed by the pandit and comes and sits next to Shiv. Shiv looks at Gauri as she comes and sits next to him..but the goongat although being slightly see-through red was successful In covering Gauri's face fully.

Upstairs in kapoor house Prateek walks through the corridor into shiv's bedroom while mumberling to himself while looking around the room.

"yey shiv bhi naa, Phone misplace hogaya…What's that got to do with anything ….shaadhi ho rahee hai…and god knows there are so many other problems and all he cares about is his phone."

He looks inside drawers, on shiv's desk, bedside table and even in the wash room.

"Pata nahi kaha hai" …he walks towards shiv's bed and lifts his pillows to find the phone buzzing.

Yaha hai…he picks up the phone off the bed:

The phone displays:

UNKNOWN NUMBER CALLING…

Prateek presses the red button on the phone and rejects the call when a message is displayed:

12 MISCALLS

3 NEW MESSAGES

Prateek thinks to himself "12 miscalls, maybe I should have picked up the last call, it might have been something important." Prateeks thoughts are interrupted by the loud noises coming from downstairs.

"Jo bhi hoga..shiv can sort it out after the wedding", Prateek switches off the phone and slips it into his sherwani pocket.

Downstairs Panditji was well on the way with the wedding, Shiv and gauri are both sitting beside each other in front of the lit havan kund (holy fire) having had garland each other gauri sitting under her goonghat which hid her face and meant that gauri's feelings could not be read..where as shiv was extremely relaxed and wore a content expression on his face.

pandit ji reciteing mantras:

Mangalam Bhagawaan Vishnu
Mangalam Garuda Dhwaja
Mangalam Pundari Kaaksha
Mangalaaya Tanno Hari

Prateek makes his way back into the lounge pushing his way through crowds of guests to get to the mandap which was in the centre of the room. Prateek comes and stands next to Mehen.

Mehen: tum kha gaye the beta…?

Prateek: Woh uncle kuch dhoondane… Prateek smiles at mehen. Mehen didn't ask any more questions as the wedding was more important at this point. He just smiled and carried on watching the wedding. As prateek does the same, shiv happens to make eye contact to which prateek smiles and sticks his thumb up to which shiv also responds with a smile.

After completing his mantras the pandit asks shiv to take gauri's hand into his.

Panditji: Ab shiv beta tum gauri ka haath apne haath mein lo.

Shiv places his hand out towards gauri. Gauri hesitates a little and then puts her hand within his, shiv notices how Gauri's hand trembled within his and in response he tightened his grip for support.

Panditji: "Ab jo mein khene ja raha hoon tume mere baad bolna hai…theekhai"

Shiv nods a yes

Panditji: Mein shiv kapoor is pavitra agni aur bhagvan ko shakshi mante huai tumhe gauri alok chaterjee ko apni patni swikar karta hoon.

Shiv looks towards gauri and repeats…

"Mein shiv kapoor is pavitra agni aur bhagvan ko shakshi rakhte huai gauri alok chaterjee ko apni patni swikar karta hoon."

Panditji: ab tumari bari gauri…smiles at gauri who listens from under her goonghat

There is a small silence while everyone waits for Gauri to speak, with this pause alok and other members of the family start to worry. The panditji repeats.

Panditji: "Bolo beta"

Gauri hesitates, and then begins in a quite sweet but shaky tone "Mein gauri alok chatterjee….. is pavitra agni aur bhagvan ko shakshi mante huai aap……shhhi..."

She pauses at this point closes her eyes to ease her nervousness and then continues "shiv kapoor ko apna patee mantee hoon."

With that everyone's worries ease and smiles replace the anxious expressions on there faces.

Panditji: Dekhye aab phero ka vakt agaya hai,ab aap khade ho jaye.

Shiv and gauri both get up.

Panditji: ab aap havan kund ke saat phere lenge, jaise jaise aap phere lenge mein aapko har phere ka mahatava samjaoonga.

Shiv and Gauri begin to circle the havan kund with shiv in front and Gauri following a little slower behind as family and friends shower flower petals on shiv and gauri. Just as each phera is complete the panditji pauses his mantras and explains.

"Phele phere mein aap dono yey vachan denge ke aap hamesha ek duje ka saath denge."

"Dusre mein aap yey vachan lete hai ke, apne apne parivar ko ek maan kar jeeinge."

"Teesra vachan tum gauri, hamesha Shiv ka sanman rakongi aur saath doge."

"Cotha vachan, shiv tum har halat mein gauri ki rakhsha karonge."

On the fifth phera the pandit asks gauri to switch places with shiv.

Panditji:"Panchma vachan, gauri tum shiv ki jaga loge aur yey pran longi ke agar kaal dastak de toe tum shiv se phele apne aap ko samne karonge."

"Aur akhree ke do phere mein tum dono bhagvan se ek sukhi sansar ki prathna karonge."

The phera's are complete and the panditji asks shiv and gauri to sit down.

Panditji: "Ab aap done bhet sakte hai, ab yey shaadhi ke saabse pavitra aur khaas rasam hai jo aap dono ki shaadhi ek atoot rishte mein bhand degi

.. shiv tum gauri ko mangal sutra pheravo ge aur sindoor daan karonge" the panditji hands shiv the mangalsutra and a container of sindoor (vermillion). Shiv reaches a little towards Gauri and places the mangalsutra around her neck. He then lifts gauri's ghoongat up to see Gauri sitting with her eyes fixed to the floor an extremely nervous expression on her face. Shiv smiles at her to help ease her nervousness which she fails to see as her eyes are firmly fixed away from shiv. In that one second of lifting her ghoongat up shiv noticed how beautifully simplistic and not to mention nervous gauri looked. Prateek's words came into Shiv's mind:

"Be gentle with her shiv, she is scared of you"

Shiv kept his smile to help gauri relax. He took sindoor onto his thumb and placed it in gauri's maang (hair parting.) Shiv noticed how with his touch gauri closed her eyes to which he gave an understanding smile.

Panditji interrupts the moment to announce the completion of the wedding:

"Ab vivah sampoorn hua, aap dono pati patni ke bandan mein band gaye"

Pandit looks at gauri and a smile who is still sitting with her eyes lowered, shiv had lifted the goongat off so gauri's face could be seen but Gauri was shy and kept her self fixed in a position that meant looking at the surroundings could be avoided. Panditji notices an unusual concern within Gauri and aims his words towards her.

"vaise bhi aap ek dusre ke leyie hein bane hai, jaise mata parvati aur bhagvan shiv ki jodi,

janmo janmo se maa gauri, bhagvan shiv ki khelati hai. Tum bhi aajse…

SHIV KI GAURI kehlaaongi"
