CHAPTER 5

After 6 MONTHS...

Nandini Reaches Mumbai

I was very happy and the excitement to meet my parents was so much that in spite of a very hectic week I didn't sleep at all on the flight. I just wanted to reach Mumbai as soon as I can.

My first 10 days in Mumbai were spent with parents and then after they left for U.S.A. I had to focus on my work. I somewhere was hesitant in contacting Manik and also I had lost my phone and with it Manik's personal number too. While working on client site, there were a few girls gossiping about Manik Malhotra, I was curious to know about him but my active mind was telling me to focus on work.

However, my sub-conscious mind wanted to hear about him and I came to know that Manik Malhotra had finally joined the social networking site Facebook and Twitter. This gave me a hope and a way to contact Manik. I had promised him that I would surely let him know whenever I was in Mumbai.

I reached my service apartment and with a huge debate in my mind, about contacting him or not. With some hope I thought I should message him on Facebook. It was 10:30 p.m. I wrote a message for him...

"Hi Manik, I hope you are fine. I lost your number so couldn't call you. I don't know if you remember me, it's Nandini from London. I am in Mumbai and thought of messaging you. In case you get my message please call me on my India number (099...) Take care."

I left for work the very next day and was busy but still I checked my inbox in case there was any message from Manik, but there wasn't any. In fact I saw that the message was seen by him and I realised it wasn't worth as he was a star and why would he remember a normal girl whom me he met just once... 2-3 days passed by and I just thought of checking my Inbox again and my face brightened when I saw Manik had left me a message...

"Hi Miss Nandini I am busy with work. Hope you would understand, speak to you once I can find some time. Take care."

I was dam pissed off with his reply, is that all he had to say?? In fact why the hell was I even expecting anything from THE MANIK MALHOTRA'... I immediately replied back to him.

"Hi Manik I understand you are busy man. It's fine. I am sorry I bothered you in your busy schedule, well I was in Mumbai just for work and I thought of saying a Hi to you. Apologies. Bye."

I left my laptop and I don't know why I was so irked with his response, something inside told me why was I over-reacting, he must be actually busy so he can't talk. After battling within myself for good 30 minutes I rested my case that he must be busy and I shouldn't draw any conclusions, but that irritation wasn't parting my mind.

Suddenly I got a call from an unknown number...

Natasha- Hi is that Miss Nandini? I am Manik's manager Natasha.

"Hi Natasha."

Natasha -Ma'am sir is actually busy with doing 2 shifts of shooting so that he could get the weekend off. He wanted to know where were you staying and if you were comfortable and in case you need anything please do call me on this number. Sir has asked me to inform you that he would be meeting you tomorrow.

I was somewhere happy on this new found news that yes he was busy and he in deed cared for me and that's why Natasha has called up.

Natasha- Ma'am are you there??

"Yeah Natasha, I am here."

I provided her with my address and other details. A smile crept on my lips after knowing he was actually busy and with this thought I felt a bit bad as I had judged him too early. The same night I was thinking of finishing all my pending work so that I could be free to meet him the next day. But, the thought of meeting Manik the next day was overpowering my mind and I began to think what I would wear. After one hour long of debating over my attire I was too tired and wanted to sleep. Suddenly I received a message.

Manik- Hi Miss Nandini hope you are doing good, I am really sorry for messaging you so late in the night, I just got over with my second shift and while returning home I thought of dropping a line to you. If you are free tomorrow can we meet for lunch?? Do let me know in morning.

Suddenly I was like "Lunch? " A big question mark appeared in front of my eyes and I was damm confused as what to do coz I had committed my few friends in Mumbai for a lunch and I couldn't goof up with that. I sent him a message again.

"Hi Manik I am good, please don't say sorry, I can understand. Well, we can surely meet tomorrow but sorry I had already committed my friends for lunch. Can we meet in evening, if in case you are free? "

Manik- No problem, it's ok. Hhhmm just tell me where are you going for lunch and then I can pick you up from there. Is that okay?

"That sound's nice. Cool. See you tomorrow." I quickly messaged him the place. I don't know why but I was very happy after speaking to him on messages. So, he didn't break his promise that he will remember me.

Manik's world...

I was at work when I was informed by Natasha that someone called as Nandini had sent a message. She told me it was Nandini from London. I left my work and excused myself for 5 minutes to check my Facebook and finally I saw her message. I was in a hurry and told her I was busy and would call later.

During the 5 minute break for touch-up I saw her message again which clearly showed her disappointment about my reply, I could sense it and it made me feel guilty. I quickly called up Natasha and asked her to call up Nandini. I decided to do over-time in fact do another shift so that I could take a break for the weekend to meet her.

I don't know why it was so important for me to be there for her. I spoke with the production and told I wanted to wrap up the shoot in 2^nd shift and take the weekend off as I had something very important to do. They were quite supportive and agreed to my request. I was shooting till 1:00 a.m. and it had been almost 19 hours I was working non-stop, and I realised I wasn't tired as the thought of meeting Nandini made me feel alive and energetic.

On my way after messaging her and fixing our meeting point, I was very excited and I don't why I just kept smiling like a joker. I reached my flat and after changing I just crashed on my bed with thought of finally meeting her.

THE D-DAY

I woke up with the alarm ringing on my phone showing its 9:00 a.m. I wanted to shoo it off and then I realised the day had come when I could meet Nandini.

The excitement to see her was so much that I immediately got on my feet and went to the washroom and after taking my shower I came out and was looking at my wardrobe as to what I should wear, I just couldn't decide as if I didn't dress up well, she would turn down to speak to me. That thought was enough for me to start rack sacking my wardrobe. I finally settled down to wear a white shirt and a pair of denims with a casual shoes and a pair of glasses and left them on my bed.

I heard Shanta Tai calling out to let me know that my breakfast was ready. I quickly changed to denims and a vest to eat my breakfast. It was 11:00 a.m. and I still had no clue as to what was making me so nervous and then my phone buzzed. It was a call from my dad.

Dad- Hi Manik, good morning beta, how are you?

My nervousness was reflected in voice when I spoke to my dad.

"Hi Dad, I am good, how are you? When are you and mom coming back?"

Dad could easily guess from my voice I was nervous about something.

Dad-Manik what is it? What's bothering you son?

"Dad, voh Nandini... you remember I met her in London, the girl who saved my life, she is Mumbai and I am going to meet her after lunch. Dad you know how highly I think of her and I am nervous...what if she has got married or has a boyfriend?"

What the hell, what did I just say married, boyfriend, what is wrong with me where did that come from? Why am I behaving as if I have to propose her today and now I am worried about the fact ki ladhki single hai ya nai...

My dad was surprised too with my answer and but somewhere he had guessed it long back that I had sub-consciously started to like her.

Dad-Manik what? What did you say? You are nervous because you are worried about her marital status? Why is it bothering you son hhuhhh?

My dad said that last line with a tease. I gathered myself from the confused thoughts and I gave up in front of my dad and said "Dad voh, main...ok fine, I don't know why I am nervous and I don't know why I am thinking she is single or not. All I want to do is meet her dad."

Dad-Manik, don't worry you would be fine. Now go get ready and meet Nandini and do say a hello and thanks from our side. Don't forget to take flowers with you when you meet her. She would like it.

My dad's words just calmed my nerves and I finally was a bit more relaxed. I began to get ready and then looked at the time it was 1:20 p.m. Time for me grab a small snack and then march off to meet NANDINI at 3:30 p.m.

What happened when they met on Saturday?? On Sunday, what made the ever so calm Nandini extremely angry with Manik, when he had invited her for lunch with him and FAB 5 at his flat...

Chapter 6

MANIK ON HIS WAY TO MEET NANDINI

I got ready and looked at the mirror for the last time and my dad's words helped me to put my best smile on my face. I quickly took the car keys and while going on the way I stopped to pick up flowers for her. I got a call from FAB 5 and they all wished me luck...

They knew how much I had waited for this day. I turned on the radio and then a song played which I really liked...It was Phir le aaya dil...I loved it...With every beat a smile settled on my face and I started to remember the time I had spent with her...

(I remembered how I had yelled on her that night... how much I troubled her that night...) This feeling was so pure and blissful... I just said Thanks to God for fulfilling my wish to meet her again in this life... "THANK YOU NANDINI KE BAPPA"...

(Destiny wanted us to meet... Yes, my heart skipped a beat and sighed...when I heard the line woh jo ruki si chah baki hai...' I remembered how I had felt disheartened when I couldn't meet her the next time I was in London)

I don't what was it but that day all through the drive only romantic songs were being played, making me remember her more..

It was 2:50 p.m. and I reached the hotel and handed my keys for valet... Suddenly, I saw my friends there. I was stunned to see them there and I realised not again and they gave me an angry look. I was shocked by their look.

Mukti- My dearest Manik, What time you had to meet Nandini? What is wrong with you?

I got so scared and freaked out, so without looking at my watch said..."Guys, what? Damm don't tell me I am late and she has left again..."... Looking at me getting freaked out my friends got some mercy on me..

Dhruv- Bro, you are not late, we were just teasing you ...relax...breathe. It's 3:00 p.m. Chill.

I finally got calm and gave them my angry glare..

Aliya - AAWWW, look at him guys.. he looks cool, aur yeh iske cheeks...(she pulled my cheeks) see how red they are...God, Manik you are blushing like a newly wed bride...

Everyone started laughing at me and I too gave in with them...Knowing I would be nervous my friends had come to support me before I meet Nandini. They took me a private area they had reserved for me. And then Cabir spoke to me.

Cabir - Manik, relax... I know what you are feeling...and trust me hum sab yaha sirf tere liye aaye hai...Hum log lounge mein chill karenge when you would meet her.. OK.

I knew it. "Guys thanks, it means a lot... in fact I needed you guys..."...Well, how can Cabir and gang leave a single chance to tease me...In the last 2 months they used to tease me with a song... I knew it was coming...

All I could say back is "NANDINI"...I kept looking at her; we smiled with all our heart but couldn't speak. I don't know but I just hugged her, which made her lose her balance and then I held her so that we don't fall.

NANDINI'S POINT OF VIEW-

Manik suddenly hugged me tightly, I just didn't know how to react, and then slowly I put my hands on his back.

MANIK'S POINT OF VIEW-

All her friends stood shocked when I hugged Nandini and their eyes were popped out. My friends were also surprised, but they were too happy for me. I broke the hug and then looked around and found everyone looking at us. I was feeling a bit awkward too and so was Nandini. Thanks to my saviour CABIR.

Cabir- Hey guys so you finally met.. huhhh

All her friends looked confused. One of them asked her.

"Nandini, tum Manik, THE MANIK MALHOTRA' ko janti ho? You never told us..."

Nandini- Ya we met once in London.

Then Nandini introduced me to her friends and then one of them said that we need to leave soon. I then introduced her to FAB 5. Everyone greeted her and hugged her. Her friends bid her bye and then I found one of them coming back to us. It was Aryan.

Aryan - Nandini, you have the keys for home...

Nandini- Ohh ya I have them. Please don't make mess at home...Can you please pick up my clothes from the designer?? Please Aryan...

Aryan smiled at her and took the keys from Nandini and then he kept his hand her face.

Aryan- Hey I'll pick them up Nands, don't worry. Once you get free let me know and I'll send the driver to pick you ok. And yes get ready on time, we can't be late.

Nandini - Ya, ya I will...and i'll come on my own, don't send the driver. I'll reach home safely. Look your best tonight ok...Now go...Bye.

Aryan bid her goodbye...All this was watched by me and my friends...They saw my face which had by then became pale. Everyone gave me a smile to make feel better.

Nandini - sorry guys...I am glad I could meet the FAB 5...I really like your songs...Bethein???

Manik- ya sure...

Only I knew what was going inside my heart...We all sat down and then FAB 5 said they had to leave.

Mukti- Guys, I think you should speak, we are in the lounge area...Manik flowers...

I gave Nandini the flowers I had got for her. She smiled...

Nandini- Thanks Manik. Well, guys please I won't mind if you are with us, in fact I would love if you join us.

Nandini persuaded them to stay back and then Cabir looked at me and he understood I needed them.

Aliya- Nandini, we all want to thank you for saving Manik that day, else we would have lost him. Thanks for giving us our OLD MANIK...

Nandini- I did nothing guys, we just met because of destiny...I am glad he is with you guys now.

I saw she was hesitant in asking something...

Manik- I spoke with my parents, things are better now...In fact I now meet them every week.

NANDINI- How come you know I wanted to know this? I am so happy for you Manik.

Everyone was listening to our conversation and smiled. Then Dhruv ordered for coffee for everyone. We all chit chatted for some time. Cabir saw my face and sensed I was upset. He messaged me.

Cabir- Bro, I know what's bothering you...Why don't you ask her if she is single or not...If she likes Aryaan..Bro clear it out man..

Cabir knew me so well. I replied back..." Cabir no yaar...I can't embarrass her...I am scared...what if...Cabir I met her, that's more than enough for me." But Cabir being Cabir...

Cabir- Nandini koi function hai? I mean tum log keh rahe thy na...

Nandini- Ohh yes, one of our college friend is getting engaged tonight toh sab friends after the pooja yaha lunch ke liye aaye they and the ceremony is in night. Actually, it happened all of a sudden.

Nandini's phone rang.

Nandini- Yes Aryan, hhmmm...nahi tell him to get the other dress ready too in 3 days...Aryan ask him to get the saree ready at any cost...hhmm...ya...ok...No, I am still here...Ha, I'll reach home on time and that too safely. Chalo bye.

Listening to it, my heart was sinking and I was feeling as if someone just took away something precious from me.

Nandini- Sorry guys, voh actually our friend's wedding is on this Friday... so you know how it is...

Nandini looked at me as I was turning my coffee mug and was lost.

Nandini- Are you fine Manik?

Manik- hhmm, ya...good your friend is getting married, good.

Cabir- Hey Nandini, you look quite excited haa...so tell us about yourself a bit, please don't mind if I ask you something...is Aryan your..??? You know what I mean...

That out of the blue question made me drink that hot coffee and I started to cough, I glared at Cabir and gave me "WHAT THE..." Look. I became dam nervous, as I was scared to hear her reply. I then saw Mukti and Aliya were holding my hands below the table. They realised I was nervous.

Nandini looked very uncomfortable with that question and I could see it that she didn't like it.

Nandini- What?? What kind of a question is that Cabir...

She paused and with every nanosecond the wait for her answer was killing me.

Nandini- Well, he is a nice guy and he cares for me...

In my mind I kept saying' no, no, no, please don't say it...'

Cabir- so you like him right??

Nandini- Ok...yes I do...I know him quite well...And ya he is too protective when its me...

That was it for me, I just couldn't hear more and realised she liked someone else. Before she could say something I just excused myself so that she couldn't see the tears in my eyes...I started to walk away slowly... I was so happy all this while and now...

Nandini- He is nice as he is my very good friend...in fact I am blessed to have a friend like him. So ya I like him as a friend...

I suddenly stopped and turned back FRIEND', as if someone had given my heart beat back...

Nandini- Well, I don't know why I am telling you guys about it, I don't like talking about my personal life as such...But, yes I feel good after meeting you all...

Her voice then became a bit sad.

Nandini-I can never like anyone...I can't...And ya I will marry a guy chosen by my parents... ...marriage, love...Forget it...

She composed herself back...

Nandini- So Cabir, in short I am single...happy

She smiled and then looked at me.

Nandini- All ok?

I sat back at my place...

I was very confused when she said all that. Why can't she like someone? My one side of heart was happy to know she was single and other part of my heart wanted to know the pain I felt in her voice She saw her phone and said she was getting late and told she would meet soon.

Nandini- Guys I'll get late, I need to rush...Sab marenge mujhe...Sorry...Manik, it was nice meeting you again finally...

Manik- ya, it was...Come I'll drop you home.

Nandini- thanks, but Aryan kaha manta hai, he has sent a car for me. Sorry...

Manik - It's ok.

Cabir- Nandini agar tum kal free ho toh let's meet tomorrow for lunch. I mean we should spend some time together what say?

Aliya- Yes Nandini please...

Manik- please.

She looked at me and smiled..

Nandini- Ok fine...par kaha?

Manik- My flat tomorrow...I'll send the car to pick you up.

Nandini- Ok done...It was so nice to meet you all.

We were walking towards the entrance where our cars were waiting. She was about to sit in the car and turned back.

NANDINI- Manik, you look good today, sorry pehle nahi bol saki...

She smiled with all her heart and don't know when all the worries from my heart went away and I started to blush...

Manik- Thanks, white suits you too...

She just smiled back. Her innocent eyes, the dimple on left cheek, I just couldn't take my eyes off, her hair on her face were disturbing her and her bangles made such a melodious sound...I just stepped forward and tucked the strand of her hair on her face behind her ear.

She looked at me surprised, but she stepped back a bit. I realised she felt uncomfortable.

Nandini- Bye guys...See you tomorrow.

She left...

CHAPTER 7

LUNCH!!!

I left in the car for home and something deep inside me I felt good. I never thought after such a long time I would readily open to a bunch of few people I just met and more importantly I would say a guy that he looks good. I smiled on myself for it and also recalled how Manik hugged me tight and it made my heart beat.

I reached home and then headed to take a shower as I knew Aryan would kill me if i got late for the engagement. Aryan was about to come any moment so I got busy in my final touch-up and while putting my lip gloss I got a message from Manik.

"Hi Nandini it was great meeting you today, hope you weren't annoyed by weird questions Cabir asked you...Nandini I am really sorry if you felt bad, voh Cabir toh hai hi aisa, please don't mind...Well, you enjoy the function and I look forward to see you for lunch at 1:00 p.m. Let me know if you need anything...Take care."

Before I could reply him Aryan called up.

Aryan - Hey Nandini I am downstairs, come fast.

"Hi Aryan, ya I'll be there in 2 minutes."

I quickly locked the house and went down. On the way to the venue I realised I hadn't replied to Manik. "Hi Manik sorry for replying late, was getting ready. Please, do not apologise. I'll see you tomorrow for lunch J need to head before anyone kills me lol... take care."

After that I got down from the car and went to the engagement party. It wasn't a very large gathering only a few relatives and friends. We all had a great time and Aryan dropped me home.

It was 8:00 a.m. and I was sipping my green tea when I got a call from Manik.

Manik- Hi Nandini, sorry for calling you so early.

"Hey hii good morning, don't say sorry. Tell me kya hua?

Manik- Well voh I wanted to know what do you like to eat?

"Manik good you asked me, I am a vegetarian...If you don't mind can I get Indian food to eat please...anything Indian...hhmm Punjabi - dal makhni, rice..."

Manik- Well ok, good you told me. Cool done. So how was the engagement?

"It was good, infact not much of a gathering, but ya wedding is gonna be a big affair. My friend's father is a leading builder Dalmiya's, you must have heard of them?"

Manik- What?? (He was a bit surprised..) Do you mean you are going for Akshay Dalmiya's marriage on Friday? God seriously...

"Well, yes do you know him?"

Manik- Of course, me and Akshay are college buddies. In fact poora FAB 5 would be there...Great we surely will have fun...

"Ok, Akshay never spoke about you guys, strange. Actually me and Akshay studied Masters together in London, so that's how i know him." Akshay always spoke of a friend called Manik whom he considered his confidante, but never told me his friend Manik was "MANIK MALHOTRA". Actually Manik had missed his engagement because of some urgent work.

Manik- Well, cool. Chalo I'll get going with lunch preparations and the car would be there to pick you up at 11:45 a.m.

"Cool, see you soon."

MANIK'S POINT OF VIEW-

After meeting Nandini I was feeling so good that I can't express in words. After getting back home I kept posing in the mirror and remembered what she said me ''You really look good' God, how can someone be so innocent and then ruffled my hair.

I really wanted to be a good host for Nandini and so after having a word with her instructed my cooks to make a proper vegetarian Indian cuisine with Punjabi dishes. At 12:30p.m. FAB 5 entered my home and but I was eagerly waiting for Nandini to come. Well, she came at 1:20 p.m. and apologised for being late.

Nandini- Hi sorry I am late. How are you?

Nandini looked so simple yet so elegant in her black top and denims, with her hair open on one side and no make-up .Simple, yet royal.

We all started to catch up with each other and yet again my impatient friends on the dining table asked Nandini which made her very uncomfortable.

Aliya- Hey Nandini, so London mein you have been living for for 3 years now and you are still single? I mean strange...Don't get me wrong I mean you are beautiful, intelligent and independent yet single..

Nandini was taken aback from this sudden comment and i could clearly see she wanted to ignore that question.

"Well, Aliya is it important to be in a relationship and only then it would signify that a girl is complete...I don't believe in this thought process."

It made me think again yesterday she had pain in her voice, today she was a bit cold in her reply to Aliya. I hope she was fine.

Aliya- No Nandini, I didn't mean that.

"Relax Aliya, I understand" She gave a weak smile to her.

God knows what got into my friends head that didn't understand that Nandini wasn't comfortable talking about her being single. Yet, again a question from Dhruv.

Dhruv- Toh Nandini you don't believe in relationships ya you don't believe in love?

"Ok...well neither of it Dhruv... Suddenly, her expressions changed and her innocent expressive eyes were quiet.

I sensed it and changed the topic. "Guys, let it be na...Acha Nandini so are your all friends coming on Friday? "

She drifted from her thoughts and replied.

"hhmmm...Sorry, ya Manik"

Before I could pursue the conversation further Mukti spoke.

Mukti- Nandini sorry again but how do you find Manik?

I was drinking water when Mukti out of the blue asked Nandini this question and I spilled the water. She didn't know what to answer and i looked at her from the corner of my eye.

"Well Mukti, he is a nice guy."

I knew my friends wanted a different answer from her that she liked me and their excitement to see us together didn't go unnoticed by Nandini. She looked at me and I could hardly manage to look into her eyes and just looked at my plate.

"Guys, I really don't know what kind of answer you are expecting from me. Manik is a nice human being isn't that a reason enough to be friends?"

My friends were in general had a very quick understanding of people and their talk, but this time they had lost it.

Dhruv- Nandini we didn't mean that, just that we thought you both will look good together.

That was it for Nandini and she didn't say a word after that. She just excused herself and begain to call someone.

Nandini- Hi can you please book me a taxi, ya the address is...yes please as soon as possible. Thanks."

I could see how angry she was and by it everyone got tensed too. I tried to go near her..."Nandini I'll drop you home please don't call a taxi. I know you didn't feel good and your anger is justified. Please I apologise from their side." Everyone said sorry too, but Nandini left without saying a word.

Her silence killed me. I couldn't believe that the girl I would never in my wildest dream hurt was deeply hurt because of me. I left numb. My friends apologised me and were feeling bad. I just said it's ok. They all left and I didn't have the courage to clear the air with her.

It was night when I got a message from her.

"Thank you for the lunch."

I just couldn't hold back and called her up.

"Nandini I am really sorry, I really know you are hurt and I in my wildest of dreams can never think of hurting you. Please, I am sorry."

Nandini was quiet and then she spoke.

Nandini- Manik its ok ...in fact its me who needs to apoloigse for my sudden exit. Sorry.

"No Nandini,please don't say that.. Are you still mad at me?" I asked her like a baby asks if her mother was still angry. I so wished she wasn't and was holding my breath and then I heard her laugh out loud on the phone. She kept laughing for a few minutes.

Nandini- God Manik you are too cute. I think no body in this world can remain angry with you...And ya please tell your frineds I am fine.

Her laugh could have such an effect on me I didn't knew, I was smiling like a fool while she spoke to me.

Nandini- Manik, all's fine. Go sleep. Bye.

I laid down on my bed with stupid a smile which never left my face and I was recalling her sweet face, her lips , her hair and her innocence, I was too mesmerised by her. And then it came to my mind why does she get uneasy whenever someone spoke to her being single, why do I feel there is something deep in her heart there was pain which she has kept locked. I wanted her to be free of that pain and for it I would do anything. Though we met just 2-3 times yet that feeling of protecting her was very dominant inside me and I knew it this feeling can't be just for a friend...She was something else for me, but I didn't know what...

Chapter 8- Part A

It was a relief for me to know that Manik and his friends weren't upset with my behaviour. I really felt strange and amazed on how I felt as if I had known Manik for years. But, then in my heart something was still hurting and I shrugged the thought and went to sleep.

For the next couple of days I was damm busy with work and so was Manik. Finally, it was Wednesday night when I knew I could sleep till late morning as I had taken holiday for Akshay's marriage. My friends started to bug me from 8:30 a.m. and reminded me of Akshay's Haldi ceremony that was to be taken place at 11:30 a.m. I had missed out on his cocktail party due to work and I knew everyone was angry with me.

I quickly took shower and had then decided on wearing a yellow anarkali suit for haldi...Aryan had come to pick me up as always and we left for Akshay's home. Akshay's haldi ritual still had time to start till then we all friends were bugging him with our teasing session. His parents were sweethearts, none of us felt that we were meeting them for second time. They really made us feel at home.

MANIK'S POINT OF VIEW-

I got up with Natasha's call at 9:00 a.m. as I had asked her to wake me as well as my friends for Akshay's Haldi ceremony. Though I was least interested in attending such rituals, I just wanted to go because I knew Nandini would be there. I couldn't believe how restless I had been every night with the thought that I couldn't meet her for 3 days. I never knew I could get so restless and had never felt like this did for any of my ex-girlfriends.

I knew it was a morning function at his home so decided to wear a light blue shirt with beige cotton trousers and a blazer to go with. I wanted to look my best in front of her. Cabir was on his way with others to pick me up.

Cabir- Manik we are reaching in 5, come down...God, can't believe tu aise functions mein jane ke liye marr raha hai and saath mein hum sab ko bhi leke jar aha hai...like seriously man what's wrong with you... (He was pissed off with me for dragging them).

I had not told my friends the real reason for going to Akshay's place as I knew they won't leave a single chance to irritate me with their stupid song CHURA KE DIL TERA...'

We all left and reached Akshay's place. He and his family were damm surprised to see me and FAB 5 as we were tagged as not so family function attenders'. We were greeted by Akshay's mom who was extremely happy to see all of us.

Akshay's Mom Reena Aunty- Oh my God, what a pleasant surprise, Akshay ne mujhe bataya nai ki tum sab aa rahe ho...I missed you kids so much...

Reena Aunty was loved by all of us and we all hugged her back.

I said "Aunty hummein toh aana hi tha after all it's Akshay's wedding...Where is he??"

Reena Aunty- beta haldi ki rasam start ho gayi hai, go fast...

Without any delay we all went inside and then met Akshay first and applied haldi on him he was really happy to see us. My eyes were searching the entire living area which was full of guests, but I couldn't spot Nandini anywhere.

Then I saw her standing in one corner of the room, my restless nerves became calm and a smile came on my face. But, in the other second I saw Aryan saying something to her in her ears. My blood started to boil, I didn't like it, I knew they were only friends, but the minute he came close to Nandini all I wanted to do is smash his face.

Dhruv saw my irritation as after seeing Nadini with Aryan I just stormed out of the living area to the lobby. All my friends came behind me as they were shocked.

Dhruv- Manik kya hua tujhe? Are you fine? Baat kya hai?

Cabir- Manik, remember what Nandini said, she clearly mentioned ki Aryan uska bahut acha friend hai, why are you getting so hyper?

I was surprised how he knew I was irritated because of that Aryan.

Cabir- Dude look kya de raha hai? Dekha mene Nandini ko Aryan ke saath...Well, now I know ki tum hummein iss Haldi ki rasam mein kyun laya hai...You wanted to meet Nandini right? Well, usse mujhe yaad aaya what is Nandini doing here? Don't tell me tune use yaha bulaya hai??

I gave Cabir an anrgy look and he gave me his famous sarcastic smile.

Cabir- Bro ok fine...tell me what is she doing here..

Mukti- Ya, Manik...How come she is here?

"Guys Nandini and Akshay dono ne apni Masters ek hi university se ki hai. They both were in UK together..."

Aliya- (in her teasing tone) Ohhh so now I know why we are here...God Manik, this girl is something...Matlab Manik tu toh kabhi aise functions mein jata nai and see here you are...She really has changed you...not bad (and she winked at me.)

I ignored Aliya's comment as my focus was on how to get that Aryan away from Nandini. Then I saw both of them coming out of the living area and what I saw next just raised my anger to the next level. Aryan was trying to put haldi on Nandini's face...

Aryan- Nands how much ever you say No mein toh haldi lagake rahunga...

I continuously in mind was speaking to myself "Why the hell is he forcing to apply haldi on her face...aur yeh Nands kya hai...hhuhhh...uska namm Nandini hai, can't he call her Nandini, she has got such a beautiful name..."

Nandini- No ways, you won't...Let me go..Devika kaha hai?

While they were talking Nandini bumped into me. She didn't know I was coming too for the function.

Nandini- I am so sorry...(Then she looked at me) Manik tum yaha?

"Hi, ha voh Akhay ki Haldi thi so we all came"...

Aryan- Hey hi Manik, how are you?

"Hi, I am good" (I said that with a fake smile).

Nandini- sab aaye hai?

FAB 5 met Nandini and then finally that Aryan got a call and he left. I felt relived as now I could get some time with Nandini. I just had started to speak he came back and Nandini excused herself. I so wanted to kill him 😡as Nandini again got busy listening to Aryan.

Nandini- Hey what did Kafeel say? Why aren't you guys telling me ki hum log kaha ja rahe hai in evening?

Aryan kept his hands on her cheek. I wanted break his hand 😡, but I made sure I was hearing every word they spoke.

Aryan- Nands, everyone has decided to go out clubbing tonight. Now, please you don't say no ok. I know you don't go out much, but please yaar itne time badd sab mile hai, please don't say no...

Nandini- Aryan, its ok..I am in...You know na I don't go out if you guys are not around.

Aryan- cool toh aaj rate 9 Miles ho jaye...I will call and get the arrangements done aur ha don't worry I'll be with you.

"Clubbing, hhmmm 9 Miles..." I said to myself and then I looked at my friends and I realised they too had heard everything. They winked at me with a smile. Well, as everyone knows dost sab jante hai'...How lucky I was to have such friends.

Aryan - Acha Nands, you must be hungry let's go out for lunch and then I'll drop you and Devika to the salon.

Nandini- Cool. Give me a minute I need to say bye to FAB 5.

She came back to us with Aryan and said...

Nandini- Guys I need to leave, actually me, Devika and Aryan are going for lunch and then we need to head to salon...

Dhruv- It's ok Nandini, no problem...

She bid us bye and then left with Aryan, I couldn't even speak to her, rokna toh bahut dur ki baat hai. I was damm upset. Then she turned back and called me.

Nandini - Manik...

I looked at her and we all started to walk towards her.

"Ya bolo..."

Nandini- Did you guys had lunch? I mean if you guys want you can join us...

Without even waiting for a second Cair spoke.

Cabir- You are too good Nandini, how did you know we all were hungry...We all are in...Hope Aryan doesn't mind...

Cabir knew I won't be able to say anything so he took charge...Today again Cabir became my saviour...

Nandini- Aryan ko kya problem hogi, come along, kyun Aryan? (She looked at Aryan who smiled back and nodded yes). She then called her other friend Devika, yes she is the mad girl who had kissed me that day...God she is so stupid.

We all left for the parking area and then decided that Nandini, Devika, Cabir and me would sit in Cabir's car and the rest in Aryan's car. I decided to drive. Cabir purposely made Nandini sit on the seat behind the driving seat and he sat with me on the front seat. Devika then said something Nandini that left her embarrassed.

Devika- Ohh God Nandini, I still can't believe I am sitting with such hot guys...You know na I had a huge crush on Manik...

Nandini tried to look here and there.

Devika- Manik, can I call you guys by your name na ?? (She was really scared and then was looking at Nandini for help as me and Cabir were least interested in her talk. I was wearing my shades so that I could look at Nandini without her noticing me through the mirror).

Nandini- yes you can..relax Devika.

I kept looking at Nandini and smiled. She said with her eyes hinting me ki Devika aisi hi hai, Sorry...I assured her its ok...

Devika- I must confess today Manik, I have a huge crush on you... You toh know na Nandini how much i...

Nandini stared at her to be quiet and gave a look What the hell.' We were waiting on the red signal.

Devika- What yaar Nandini, you are so boring like always, even you liked him, now don't deny.

Now, that was something😃...What did she say Nandini liked me. With this statement me and Cabir both got turned back to look at Nandini. My heart stopped beating and looked at her..

Her eyes were wide open with Devika's words 😲 and after we looked at her she was embarrassed and wanted to say something, but I guess my gaze at her didn't let words out of her mouth.

Cabir and I both realised she was getting nervous and so we turned again. There was an awkward silence, but I loved it. For the first time I liked that mad girl Devika. Cabir looked at me and winked. I was smiling inside, I had butterflies in my stomach.

After a few minutes, finally she spoke.

Nandini- voh mujhe FAB 5 ke songs bahut pasand hai, I really admire your music. Devika toh kuch bhi bolti hai...

I was smiling like a fool and that made her even more conscious.

Devika- Well ya that's true...guys she is like that...hhuhhh...God, Nandini tera kya hoga...You are so innocent...

Nadini- Devika...(her tone was strict one).

Devika- Ok fine, now don't get angry or upset...and don't you dare say you aren't coming tonight...Sorry yaar...

Cabir-So Nandini, humara sirf music hi pasand tha, I mean hai ya you like something else too in us...

(Cabir was trying to see if Nandini would spill out more, he was a master player at getting secrets out.)

Nandini- no nothing like that...

Cabir- vaise Devika do you know Nandini ne Manik ko compliment diya tha, that he really looks good. (Cabir said it in a tone showing that Nandini had complimented me not just as a friend).

Devika's mouth was wide open, she looked at Nandini and then at Cabir. We knew she was shocked.

Devika- What???? Are you serious??? Nandini, THE NANDINI' said a guy he looks good...Dude I don't trust you...no ways...Nandini praises everyone, but never ever she has said any guy that he looks really good...I don't believe you Cabir...She has never said it to anyone something like this and that too the way you are telling...Dude don't fake it.

She took a pause to get a reaction from Nandini.

Cabir- Well Nandini kaha toh tha tumne...

Nandini- ha voh...I mean...voh he is a friend so bas aise hi...(words weren't coming out of her mouth)...

Nandini got more and more conscious and was constantly looking outside the window, but my eyes were fixed on her face..."So, ma'am has never praised any guy...hhmmm that's nice...aaahaaa" I said to myself and chuckled.

We then reached the hotel and Nandini didn't even looked at me once. I could sense she was feeling awkward. She was entering the restaurant when I called her.

"Nandini' She turned back and finally looked at me.

"It's ok, tumne koi crime nai kiya hai...chill" I winked at her and smiled... I could see her nerves finally relaxed.

Nandini- thanks.

We all had lunch and then it struck me if I wanna know more about her I have to bear this mad girl for some more time. I thought to myself she wasn't that bad, just a bit crazy.
