Lets Talk,

While watching the episode yesterday and reading the reactions here, I was numb for a moment. Plagued by self-doubt about my own abilities at perceiving things , I watched and re-watched the whole episode couple of times. But sadly nothing helped , because all I could see every single time and for the past few days is bullying/harassment of Nandini by someone who is in Power , known to her and has the authority to manipulate her behaviour.

The word that kept flashing in my head was not , Nandini the fighter, nor Nandini the lover but just Nandini- The victim.

She is a victim of bullying , harassment at work . From a 3rd eye perspective, you and I can see that playing , we see her being manipulated by a teacher who fought for her place in the college, who refers to her Ams as his Guru and who is obsessed at making her The best. She has become his muse and he is trying to control her environment using his position and authority to alter her perception and instill a sense of fear. In almost all the cases of harassment and bullying Victim is usually the last person to see it coming. This is why the word -"victim" is used .

Yet look at our own reactions because unlike the character ,we have the 360 degree view of the story , we tend to judge her. She is called dumb, stupid, unreasonable etc just because we as an audience "expect" her to be better, superhuman , unbreakable and even though we see all the manipulations , the act - we still find faults in the "victim" because we don't want to see her fail. It is uncomfortable for us as a viewer not because we sympathize with her situation but because we don't get "why" she is not reacting.
Blame the victim for falling for this harassment - thats what we all are doing. Or some of us will go to the extent of assuming that we would have stopped it all had we been in her place- assumptions based on zero knowledge about the nature of abuse or circumstances. Or is it that we are convincing ourselves that this act happened because it was a shortcoming of the character - not her situation, nor the perpetrator but her.
I am sure most of us have some South Asian connect , can we truly say that only "dumb", "stupid" girls fall to harassment. What about our friends or us who are intimidated, harassed on buses, work places, schools, colleges, work place. Indeed it's our gender which is dumb. We should have realized that all the blame rests with us.

We scoff at her when she says and agrees that Pandit crossed the line of a teacher , he went overboard but not as a man. Because unlike her ,we are aware of all the sides of the story. While all she saw was how she was made to feel the incompetent one when her fellow classmate declares that he was also made to sit in a smoke-filled room.

How will she convince the world and law-makers that what happened to her was bullying/harassment? The touches- firstly, none of them that she has witnessed till now are conclusive enough to be termed as "bad touch". Yes they are uncomfortable and she expresses it immediately when she moves them away but can she really explain that to police, her Principal or the world.
She is not negated what Manik is telling her. It is always there in her head, hence she is trying to find tangibles to support his version. She knows anger will not lead them anywhere they will play right at the hand of the abuser and someone like Nyo will use the circumstances again.

But like every victim she is searching for tangibility to connect with whatever she is experiencing. It's frightening, she is confused and yet she is struggling to piece it together. There is denial, slow realization and then escapism from her environment , hence she goes on about the fusion concert, because in her head, she will be away from this , with her support system-Manik and safe.

Take a moment and look at the manuals of college, schools or workplaces. You will find postulates about bullying/harassment using power tricks. Some of the behaviours that are defined as harassment are:-

exclusion or victimisation
unfair treatment
overbearing supervision
or other misuse of power or position
unwelcome sexual advances - touching, of private parts, the display of offensive materials, asking for sexual favours, making decisions on the basis of sexual advances being accepted or rejected
making threats or comments about job security without foundation
Deliberately undermining a competent worker by overloading and constant criticism
Preventing individuals progressing by intentionally blocking promotion or training opportunities.

Above are few examples how harassment is initiated. Till this point there has been no sexual advances which is why Nandini cannot call it "crossing line as a man" , because nobody will buy that. There is no tangible act to link it.
Her version of events are controlled by her abuser .So what Manik and us can see will always be different from her own perception. Similarly we are ALSO not looking at these events through her perception as a victim- we don't see her being on guard around Pandit, or being fearful whenever his name is mentioned or her doubts about herself as a capable student because of how he is controlling her behaviour.

Usually victims of harassment become frightened and de-motivated. Experience stress, loss of self-confidence and self-esteem . They become emotional, overwhelmed and cry frequently. They tend to look for support anchors or escape means to numb their harassment which is exactly what Nandini does when she goes on her Hope chant.

We very conveniently forget how her Principal sternly ordered her to not mess the concert, reminded her of what was at stake- creating further sense of suffocation in her environment and with the authorities giving full control to Pandit to do as he pleases with Nandini- is she left with any option?

Manik and her hope gives her confidence , assurance in her being which is severely being undermined by the Pandit , a man who is belittling her talent, her integrity and her life-choices. That is verbal harassment which is denting her - worse has already happened. She is already a victim even before "the so-called crossing of the line" has to happen.

Ofcourse she is the Hero because she stood against fab5 bullying, so hence we expect her to always do the same. Because she just cannot be the victim. Forgetting that she was also made a Spot or even neglected that even then her environment was controlled with Manik always keeping a back-up.

Is it really hard for us to see Nandini as a victim even though her harassment is so well defined?
Power dynamics- Check, Known person- Check again.

She doesn't need your respect or your sympathy too. But she deserves a fair chance to see her side of the story, her perspective. Because by not doing that we are blaming the victim, finding excuses for the act and somewhere undermining the trauma.

I know this ended up being as preachy as her "lectures" but then lets stop for a second and read the word- Victim again. Find out our own definition of the word.
Don't look at what could have been done but concentrate on what is happening ,which is- a girl student being bullied by a teacher who has been given full rein to control her . Perhaps, then she could become relatable.

I know this is hard, watching abuse happen on screen- but thats makes it real right? There are strong women all around the world, Jolie, Oprah Winfrey who all have gone through harassment, bullying and sexual abuse .

There is no strong girl or dumb girl here but there is a victim and all she needs is us to not make it worse by pointing out her inabilities and further bullying her with the "what if".

If we cannot stop her abuse then we shouldn't also prolong in by taking over from the abuser and judging her again and hence making her question her own sense of judgement.

If we cannot support her then lets not blame the victim.

There are times when i totally felt disconnected from the characters on certain issues ,but this time, i can totally see nandini's reaction and understand her stand.Firstly she holds onto the fusion concert as a symbol for togetherness. As viewers , we feel it is stupid cos there is the guy on the other end who is already with her on the same page. But isn't nandini a girl who believed in fireflies, who took it's glowing as true love , she holds the concert similarly.Saying this, the issue runs deeper- the girl feels jinxed and scared about being left in the dark. The musicana incident and Vday incidents have done quite a number deep, she fears abandonment. The sad reality where everytime they take a closer step, they are being pulled apart.Performing together in the concert would come around as a blessing, a belief that fate wants them together. The concert also defines the music connect with these two share. So IMO nandini clinging to concert is justified and also it would do a good number on the manik , who at times takes our nandini for granted. The guy needs to be out from his shell too.

Back to the topic on focus, i would rightly call her a victim. The girl is caught unaware of the abuse she is undergoing in the name of rigorous teaching techniques.Call it clever or the astute behaviour of pandit, who has blurred the lines between abuse and vigorous training. The way he throws around the Ams reference in the right moment whenever nandini senses discomfort and his constant berating has brought down her spirit and the girl feels the heat finding herself on the wrong side. Her lack of focus being the issue, she bows down to the accusations and feels deserving of the treatment entitled upon. However when the pandit becomes physical the girl makes her inhibitions clear and stares down at him, the pandit steers away the discomfort by dropping references or resorting to belittling her.Poor girl is caught in a whirlwind finding her stand only with concert and Manik.Abuse which comes from powerplaying, abuse which is directed upon one to feel inferior, is often camaouflaged and disguised

🤗 genie, nice to see you here.
Yes Nandini is a victim. Today when Dhruv said to Nandini "I don't know why you couldn't sing with four aagarbhattis" and that really confused Nandini, as Dhruv was puzzled himself. That just told me how right Manik was, but yes Pandit is manipulating BOTH Nandini and Dhruv. He is using Dhruv as his back up and doing whatever he pleases with Nandini.
I'm shit sacred.

Agree with whatever you wrote and I must say you have a very good hand at writing.
I do not regularly post or comment here but whatever you wrote compelled me to do so.

Getting harassed may be mentally or physically is never the act of being dumbness, when the person is known, with power and has a personal connect.

Nandini in this case is going towards mental breakdown unknowingly or unknowingly and she can find a bit of peace at her home and hope 'Manik '. And nothing is wrong in that, he is always there for her.
Even the strongest of the people like Nandini require some hope, some calmness and that she finds in Manik.

We know that she is very strong and she will fight back.
Manik as a third person sees only creepy side of Pandit but Nandini sees it as a strict behavior of a teacher because of her strong belief in teacher student relationship, and its not wrong as well.
She'll surely breakdown with Pandit goes a level up, she might agree with Manik as well but that moment would a big breakdown of her beliefs, her trust and her values.
She is learning this day by day that something is wrong and yes she is right now the Victim.

Genie made a post wat. WAAAT.

Wait. I'm a little, umm, stuck here. Imma come back. Promisezz😳

btw. Just so you know. I love you. Always, forever and hamesha. Dil se😳

EDITED COZ I'M AWESOME AND I HAVEN'T HAD MY MEAL YET FOR THIS.

THIS. This is one of the main reasons why I calm myself down every time Nandini's reaction to something pisses me off. I'm out and out a Nandini fangirl and I very, very rarely feel annoyed at her, let alone get pissed or frustrated. As a biased audience, I don't want to see my girl fail coz her intuition, her sass, her kickassery are what made me fall in love with the character in the first place. So whenever she's crying way too much, or whining or getting so desperate to get back with her guy that her whole life seems to revolve around him, I feel like the writers are messing up with one of my most fav heroines of all time. It hurts me and I get super pissed.

But then I take a moment and think. We are the audience. We're always shown the "whole" picture. We know what's happening, unlike the characters, who are "living" in it. Just like I don't know what my best friend is thinking right now, or whether my Professor or my boss is giving me creepy looks or not. We're all characters of a bigger show and we're never able to get the whole picture no matter how smart or intelligent or intuitive we are.

Manik is holding onto the hope that Dhruv is still the same because he hasn't witnessed Dhruv's insecurities growing by the day, we have. We can be annoyed at Manik thinking he is a Gadha who is still putting efforts to make it upto Dhruv. Nandini is holding onto the Hope mantra (though it tires me at times😆) and the Fusion concert because she feels it's the only way she can truly make it upto Manik, since he was the one to initiate the deal in the first place. Now even if they are kind of "together", it's more like a test she wants to pass, even though she might not need to. Because it's also about proving her worth now, since it has the added pressure of the Princi (who runs a music college where only ONE student knows classical music😳) and Pandit who is an ex-student of her Ams who wants to polish her as a singer just like her Ams had polished him as one. I'm not sure anymore whether she truly likes music or not, but I understand Nandini not wanting to let him down. Its like during my college days I had a few teachers who used to be my dad's classmates, I never wanted to let them down no matter how much I hated the subjects. For Nandini, not being able to perform would not only mean letting her hope down, but also letting Panditji down, and in a way her Ams down too. And not to forget, Nandini is a girl who doesn't believe in giving up, not without a fight at least.

Coming to the harassment, Nandini has no way of knowing Pandit is harassing her ( I doubt whether Pandit himself is aware of that🤔). I've seen plenty of teachers who tend to get physical with their students and yet not all of them turn out to be a creep. Some people tend to cross the professional line and even though Nandini seems to have a slight nagging feeling at the back of her mind she can't seem to put her finger on anything in particular. She is already too preoccupied with the ManRuv conflict, with her performing together with Manik, with her being able to perform AT ALL. I can't blame her if she doesn't have the time to sit and think through this whole Pandit practice session thingies. Again as audience, we know Dhruv's room had comparatively a LOT LESS smoke than Nandini's. There's no way for Nandini to know that. Obviously, all she sees is a fair practice session which she failed to carry out. So she pushes aside that nagging feeling once more saying he hasn't crossed his line as a man because even though he was unfair to her, she doesn't know this; even though he was improper to her, no matter how subtly, she is still not aware of it. I feel these subtle harassments are as bad as the open ones, if not worse, since the one being harassed is not aware of them most of the times. I won't call Nandini the victim coz I personally have a strong disliking for that word when it comes to using it on women. And I strongly believe she won't be one either the moment she senses Pandit's subtle harassing actions.

Plus, even heroes have their days. That doesn't make them any less of a hero. Heroes are allowed to be stupid or irrational at times too - it makes them human, and I love a human hero

Very well said Genie.
Nandini is also very overwhelmed right now. She has been going through so much in such a short space of time, from the bullying at Fab5's hands to Musicana to Manik's hospitalisation to Soha to the whole V-day fiasco and now add to that Pandit and Manik's condition. The girl has not caught a breather!

Yes the condition Manik places is now rendered irrelevant but the point is that in Nandini's head it is the only thing worth fighting for.

She not only seeks strength from it but also uses it as a haven to escape.

a victim, that's exactly what she is
you know how these things go around, first the person will talk with you, get your weak point, and then gradually use them against you. not content with that they'll force you into doing things and once you start failing, you get the tag failure/incompetent/ not interested at all on you, and they use such words to intimidate you till at one point of time you really believe every word they say!

this is exactly what is happening with Nandini, she's presently at the stage where she considers herself at fault for everything wrong happening, she believes the Pandit when he says she's not being good enough, and unfortunately the stress of what the fusion concert means for her and Manik, is pushing her even more in the hole.

from her words today, i felt that Nandini was very close to a mental breakdown, and her only soothing and encouraging factor is Manik, and she's completely leaning on him. for a girl who doesnt believe in kasam and all, yet afraid of jinxing everything incase she goes against Navya's kasam, that's enough to show how close to breakdown she is, she'll believe in everything which can give her hope for herself

Pandit is very cunning, he knew he had traumatised her, so he ends up talking with Ams, and damn the words of Ams where she also said Pandit is a strict teacher, this is so not helping Nandini at all! Again she has been cornered whereby she again feels she's the one lacking in everything! and Pandit is actually feeding and using this to control her!

this is the worst case of manipulation ever, because the person clearly doesnt even know she's being manipulated and on top she trusts him as a guru, she's even finding reasons to justify his actions!
what we users and Manik is finding creepy, she's been brainwashed to think that she's at fault and Pandit is "nothing else but STRICT!"
but this in real isnt true at all, he's not strict, he's delusional because he wants to control Nandini, he's actually pushing her and controlling her as a puppet, and if Manik really wasnt here to give Nandini his strength, then kabka Nandini would have had an inferiority complex and closed herself completely from music.
from today's episode, Nandini is clearly at her limits, she doesnt know anything anymore, she wants to perform for Manik, and yet she knows she isnt good enough so she'll clearly is willing to accept whatever Pandit asks her to do! which will hurt her even more, which can really lead her to serious troubles!

Pandit likes her, but he reminds me of those villains who take humans for objects, control them, play with them and then throw them at their guise, or even own them and keep them in a museum as a doll!
