Nandini marched out of the guest room and hit straight towards the kitchen. The open kitchen plan was the continuity of their little living cum dining room. She glanced at Manik's mother who was busy fiddling with her bag. She looked up through his half moon glasses to Nandini, who entered the room and without saying anything walked towards the Kitchen. She smiled looking at the little girl and went in the kitchen.
Nandini took out all the ingredients from the refrigerator and started washing them in the meantime. Manik's mother watched her taking out the cold meat and checking it thoroughly before putting it inside the microwave for defrosting.
"So you can cook", his mother told her as the matter of fact.
Nandini closed the microwave door with a click and set the temperature and then turned towards the snob lady. "Well aunty, yes I can cook and not only that from the past 3 years I am the one who is taking care of Manik", she walked towards her and stood right in front o her refusing to get intimidated by her, "he is my best friend and I haven't slept a single night without him. Out of respect we agreed to sleep in different rooms just because he didn't you take instant dislike on me because I am very precious to him. And now when he is sick", her voice broke, "I cannot even go to him and ask him how he is. I cannot pretend anymore aunty. If you don't like me, if you think I don't have any moral that I am sleeping with him then I cannot change your views. But all I can say", her eyes became teary, "is that we never took any advantage of living together", she swallowed the lump that formed in her throat. "We never had sex".
The silent stretched till eternity and his mother came close to her and touched her cheeks. Her smile spread across her sophisticated face. "he must be really liking you Nandini, or else he would have been fooling around with you. I know my son too well and seen that respect for you in his eyes. I have also seen that fear every time I tried to talk to you and how he was all protective about you".
