"CHAPTER 2"
As she paced towards the voice she could see the surrounding get darker than before. Rather than scaring her, the darkness instilled calmness in her. She slowed down as she reached the first floor of the fort. The fort was not as big as the other ones of the town, it was situated on one of the hills and being at the outskirts it was not well maintained. It was rather worn out yet it had its own beauty. The acropolis where the saga of two souls was supposedly born.
Mehika could feel the air, the air of warmth, the air of faith. She had known the place, but she couldn't figure out how. She tried to look around and something in her told her there was a staircase leading to an underground tunnel. She thought she was hallucinating and knew she should return to her group as she was alone in the middle of the night, but how was her heart to be convinced to return to that place where all she had led was a miserable life. In the span of nineteen long years, she could feel love, feel a hope, a hope to live a genuine life just like everyone did. A life of emotions. She thought someone was here to understand her, feel her heart. She searched for the staircase towards her left as her heart led to that direction.
She was astonished how her assumption turned out be the reality. She ran down the stairs to find the door locked. The tune grew louder and more melodic. The harmony of flute made her desperate, desperate to enter though the tunnel. She felt she knew the words but couldn't remember. She tried to hum when she realized that the darkness surrounding was growing brighter. She went down the stairs as the dawn broke, infusing radiance inside the fort, rather the monument. She paced towards the place where she was supposed to be sleeping. She managed to get back to bed without anyone noticing her absence in the meanwhile. The next day she tried asking her history teacher about Manik and Nandini, in case the History Google, as the students call her, would know about the them. The teacher showed her some strolls that evening which said much about Nandini's identity.
Nandini Shekhawat, the youngest princess of the Shekhawat dynasty in the eighteenth century. The most elegant princess of her time, she attained her early education in the town of Srihali, the town of the Shekhawats. Royalty didn't allow her to learn craft, painting and music hence she was taught them by few arisans and a musician in a fort situated at the top of a hill in the outskirts of the town.Being smallest fort owned by the dynasty, no one other than her mother and eldest brother, Cabir Singh Shekhawat knew about her learning these art forms. Her younger brother, Rishab Singh Shekhawat, fondly known as Prince Rishi in his early years, had been has been one of the strongest rulers of the dynasty. When her brother found out about her learning arts, she was forced to get married to the Prince of Ajmer, Harshad. She killed herself with a sword which belonged to her brother on the day of her marriage for reasons unknown.
As it grew dark that night she sneaked out of her room and reached the tunnel whose door was locked. She had come with a door breaker and a stone and thus she easily could enter through it. The tunnel surprisingly was unscathed, had no grime. Though the place was gloomy, the light reached though the fine window mesh placed just above her head, even when it was pitch dark outside. She kept walking though the huge foyer when suddenly her feet paced towards a room. She didn't want to enter but her feet seemed instinctive. Unable to halt, she kept walking. Her heart raced a faster with time and finally she entered. She kept looking at the murals but she knew something else was to be found there. Not that she knew the undiscovered, but she knew something had worked as that a thrust to get her into that particular room. She looked around hastily but found nothing but paintings. As she was about to leave, something hit her right foot. As she turned to see, her eyes bugled out at the sight. It was the same sword which was sketched on the stroll, supposedly the sword with which Princess Nandini had killed herself. As she bent down to pick it up, she felt the touch of the sharp sword familiar and the first word that left her mouth was "Manik". Later when she introspected, she was unable to figure out the reason of uttering that name, that name which she heard just hours back. But all her mind to think was Manik, Manik whose identity was now the biggest question in her life among all the other questions she had asked herself within no time, holding the sword with both her hands, as heavy as a chunk of steel.
How did I know that this room had something not obvious?
How did Nandini and Manik know each other?
Why did Nandini kill herself with the sword of her brother when there were so many other ways of committing suicide?
Why did she commit suicide on the very day of her wedding?
Why did she commit suicide in this fort which is eighteen miles away from the fort where every Rajputana is married?
Why does the story seem familiar?
Why do I feel that I play a crucial role in the story of Princess who has died long back, much before my family was even born?
How does enough light enter during night when I find no lamp in the fort? Enough light to illuminate what I to see, or rather a part of me wants to perceive?
Why can my mind think nothing but Manik for the past five hours?
