Sid, looooove it!! 👏 👏 Great update...I love the smirkiness that comes back to Adi for just that one, tiny moment in the boardroom 😆 the idea of working alongside Mets is sad (for what reason, only you know 😉 😆 ) but at the same time irresistable 😆 😆

Excellent update....waiting on the next one 😳

omg sid i loved it!!they finally met yes!! 😳 ..very well written again 👏 ...especially this part:

There were a few more to arrive but only one more for Adi.He felt a thrum along his nerves. His eyes, deceptively lazy, scanned the entrance.
The moment she entered, as if drawn by an inexplicable force, her eyes fell on him and for a moment everything stopped.
For that one moment, everything faded.......except them.
Her eyes portrayed a million emotions in that one moment. (i love this line)
Her step faltered.....very slightly but not so much that anybody else noticed..........Except him.

plz continue soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![

My dear, you are just going from strength to strength. You are so talented and you have such a way with your words!
There is such a natural flow to the story, its all unfolding so beautifully. I am really looking forward to seeing how it all develops! Wonderful, wonderful writing as usual!

Bloody perfect,he thought to himself,a mild anger beginning inside him.
But still,he allowed a small smirk to play on his face.Anyone else would have missed it but she did not.Her chin rose slightly and she looked away.
The smirk on his face grew into a grin briefly before falling away.

So delicately written, and so perfectly capturing the small nuances off their personality's. Well done! I throughly enjoyed that bit and I felt a smile tugging at my own lips as I read on.

I look forward to reading more! Beautiful! 😊

I'm extremely for the long delay. Was busy. Also a few things werent coming out right in this chapter so I took my time in writing it.
But this is a looong chapter so I hope it makes up for it. 😳

Note:The highlighted part in between is a flashback and its more of Maithili's pov.

In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out.It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being-Albert Schweitzer

Chapter 8

Adi walked quietly through the house barely glancing around.
Suyash had just opened another one of the numerous files around him when Adi walked in the study.Suyash had been expecting him.
Adi came and sat in front of him........waiting.He knew that his grandad would not acknowlegde his presence until he had finished his work. His old habit.
Patience was not something that came easily to Adi but he had learned it through the years.
After what seemed like a long time,Suyash finally put his pen down and looked up.
Adi did not feel his gaze and continued staring at the window, absently watching the raindrops roll down. His mind was far away from the room, the study, the present.
Remembering moments.Stolen moments.......memories of which had been successfully hidden inside.Buried.Covered......just like the black sky blanketed the world at night.
"Well?", Suyash asked.
Adi blinked and his eyes were blank once more.He turned and looked at him."She did not know..........about my involvement."
Suyahs raised his eyebrow. "And that's important because?"
"Its not.I just thought she would know."
After a moment,Suyash said,"Look Adi....you can still retract if you want to."
"No......I have given my word." Suyash lifted his lips in a half smile at the stubborness in his tone.
"Well then",said, rising from his chair."Here are some papers that need your signatures.Tomorrow I'll discuss with you about the departments of our business that you will be handling from now onwards........Goodnight."
He patted Adi's shoulder and left the study.
Adi did not move from his spot, listening to the silence which kept being broken gently by the usual sounds of the night. He got a sudden urge to get up and go after his grandad telling him that he wanted to withdraw.
That he wanted to go back.
He was almost out of his chair when he realised what he was doing.
Slowly he sat back.
No,of course not.He would not withdraw.For his grandad.And.........
He recalled the look of barely contained panic in her eyes when she had seen him.His mind kept replaying that scene over and over again.
A smirk curled up the right corner of his mouth.
Of course he wouldnt go back.
**************
While she was unknowingly being pondered upon,Maithili sat in her living room at the window sill, looking down into the scalding black liquid lodged between her hands in a ceramic mug.
The mug had a quote on it.The greatest beauty lies in the greatest clarity.
Maithili scoffed mentally and looked out the window. It had stopped raining but the fog still hadnt let up.She squinted her eyes a little to make out the Aggarwal house but the fog was so thick that nothing was clear. So she simply stared.
Clarity was something that had long since disappeared from her life.Something which she had been trying to find since the last 6 years.
In the fog,in the darkness, nothing was clear.
Why did no one tell me? Her insides screamed, though outwardly she remained calm.
She had felt a presence in the library but had not given any attention to it chalking it up to her imagination. But when she had walked through the passageways, she had detected a faint scent of expensive cologne lingering in the air.His scent.
She had stopped walking then, her stomach jolting into a slight panic.
Calm down Maithili, she had thought to herself. Cant anybody else use the same cologne?
She had walked into the meeting room hanging onto that little frame only to have it spectacularly shattered as soon as her eyes had met his black and stormy ones.
Maithili turned away from the window and took a sip of her coffee, not minding the way it burned her throat.
Why did no one tell me?
Swinging her legs down, she stood up,the floor piercing her feet with its chill.
Clouded by anger, she was almost out the door to the Aggarwal house when she realized what she was doing.
What was she going to tell Parvati anyway? What was there to say? How could she explain something which she had no clarity on?
The clock, on the wall to the right of her, struck one with a gentle chime.
Turning, she walked towards her room.Making her way easily through the dark, she settled down on her bed.
Sleep would definitely not come to her tonight............It didnt matter though.
She had not slept a full night since a long time anyway.

*****************

The next evening..........

Maithili breezed out of the library.
Tea.She needed tea....right now.Only that would calm down her throbbing headache. It had started as soon as she had woken up from her measly, two hours' sleep. She felt as if two elephants were having an intense ping-pong match inside her head.
She had just been in a discussion with the librarian about some textbooks that were needed to be ordered immediatley. Not some, there were quite a lot.Now normally it is the duty of the librarian to order books but the bookshop owner was quite a difficult man to talk to.And so it was Maithili's job to order the required books.
She came across a window and stopped there. She leaned out slightly and closed her eyes, letting the cool night air calm her senses.
She felt the chill from the window ledge slowly seep into her fingers, making her wrists ache.
She pulled her hands away and wrapped them in her warm sweater.
Turning away, she started walking again, her mind far away on the work sitting in her office and not at all on the path in front her.
As she turned the corner, she walked right into him.
Stifling her gasp,she stepped back.
Adi hadnt heard any footsteps so he wasnt expecting to run into anybody......And when he did, even though he hadnt seen her face,he knew it was her when the scent of lillies hit him.

A few years back he had dined with a very beautiful CEO in London. She was quite intelligent and witty as well and he had been looking forward to a delightful evening.
Until he had caught the woman's scent............and an unbidden image of Maithili had come to him sitting quietly at a table with one hand resting under her cheek and the other writing something.
The woman had tilted her head and had asked him if he was ok.
Later, he had left her on her doorstep with a chaste kiss on her cheek, her light eyes surprised.

Memories and reality.Everything was tangling together and it left him stunned.....but only for a moment.
He stepped back.
"Maithili",he said, his face a mask of smoothness with just a hint of a smirk.
His baritone washed over her like warm velvet and her nerves flared with an overwhelming awareness.
Her face as blank as his,she responded in a clear voice, "Mr Mehra."
His head tilted at her formal use of his surname. His eyes deceptively caught the slight and rapid pulse at her throat.
His smirk grew....slightly feral.
Hunter and the hunted.
And then, just like in the meeting,it disappeared.
Hidden in the folds of her light blue dupatta,Maithili's hands clenched into fists.
Her spine razor straight, she asked "Why are you here?"
He raised his eyebrow at her.
She almost expected him to laugh at her, call her names and transport them back to years before........when they were enemies...when things were clear.
"I had some business with the Dean."
The look on her face told him that wasnt what her question meant......and he had known that before answering her.And she knew that he knew.
He continued,"I owed Parvati Maam some debts.A few.........life debts.........not just her.But to a few others too."
His eyes bored into hers.
"You dont owe me a life debt." The words were out of her mouth before she could stop them.
His eyes narrowed,now harsh.
She stepped back slightly at the look in his eyes. She didnt know what she saw in his eyes, she couldnt read them anymore....not like before. But whatever it was,it caused something inside her to tremble.
"I believe you are mistaken about that", he said, his voice and words cold as they pierced through her inner barriers.Barriers that she had put up to prevent anybody from reading her emotions..................barriers which had always proved ineffective with him.
Before she could say anything,he spoke."I apologize for running into you."
And he melted into the shadows before she even realized that he had moved around her.

************

Red,hot fury whirled around his brain as he walked at a fast pace.
Did she not know?
He paused.
Impossible!
He started walking again....slower this time, his fury replaced by contemplation.
Could she really not know?
But,if she didnt know, then why did she panic?
He stopped again.
"Bloody unbelievable",he said,so vehemantly that a cleaner, who had been wiping the floor nearby, startled and paled at his tone.
There was so much anger in it.
But of course Adi did not even realize he was there.
She did know.He could recall her expression that night with perfect accuracy.
She knew then.She knew now.
His fury rose again like a white, hot tide.......it rose higher and higher...........and then,nothing...as it was slowly replaced by coolness.
So she refused to see it.He would see for how long.

****************

Maithili stood perfectly still as she heard him walk away from her.Only when she was sure that he was gone did mobility return to her body.
A few minutes later, she entered her cabin,a cup of tea in her hands and settled herself at her desk.Curling her hand around her tea,she sipped it,her mind not registering the sting of the hot liquid.
Her mind wandered back to when they had first met.

In her entire life Maithili had never been so nervous. She felt as if she would faint any second.
Her boss,Janki Devi was new in town and wanted to throw a party for all the rich and elite people of the society..........and she had given the responsibility of organizing said party to Maithili...........as a test to prove herself.
This was the first time she had been given such a big responsibility. That wasnt the only reason for her nervousness.
She herself had never been to any high society parties. She had no idea how such parties were. She had asked Pragati for a few pointers since her aunt was none other than Trishna Aggarwal, the woman who's motto was to live, eat and breathe parties. But Pragati being....well Pragati, had not been much help at all.
And on top of all that,it was supposed to have a 50's theme.
She had somehow manged to organize it with what little knowldge she did have and also with some help from her grandad.
She looked around.Well, till now things were going....fine.People seemed to be enjoying themselves and there hadnt been any major problem.....yet.
She distractedly watched the dancers fluttering gracefully about to the soft crooning of Asha Bhonsle in the song "Aaiye Meherbaan".
Madhubala had been such a vision in the song, Maithili thought. So beautiful,so graceful,so.....................Wait a minute! Why the hell am I thinking about Madhubala now????..............Oh god I've lost it,havent I ??
And with that she started getting nervous again.
Calm down, girl! She closed her eyes.Take deep breaths....that's it,just relax.Everything will be fine. She opened her eyes and saw a sight which threw whatever calmness she had achieved right out the window........well technically there was no window around but you get the point!
Trishna Aunty?!?! Oh god! Oh god! Oh god!!!!!!!!!!
There she was entering with her husband at her side and the rest of the family behind her.
Maithili quickly turned around.Ok,she told herself. This is not good, this is really...really......not good..... at all!!
She moved towards her left discreetly hiding among the dancers....which wasnt much help since all of them were dressed in white and she in black!
Somehow she managed to escape them.Though, she thought she saw Kamal Uncle look at her and then look away.Nah,must be my imagination.
Keeping her eyes on them, she turned slightly and walked ahead not looking where she was going.
BAM! She crashed into something solid........or rather someone solid.
Her slight dizziness settled down as the person she had slammed into turned around slowly.
Niiiice........she thought as she took in the chiselled looks in front of her. After watching all the stiff upper-lipped, middle aged people roaming about in the party, she was a little surprised to see this guy.He looked about her age.Must be someone's son or grandson, she thought.
Against her will, her eyes drifted down towards his chest and that's when she spotted the light pink stain on his shirt. She quickly looked up at him and noticed the anger in his eyes.
Uh-oh.
She opened her mouth to say something when he beat her to it......
"Cant watch where you're going" he said.......no snarled was more like it."Look what you have done!..........you waitress."
She sighed inwardly. That was the problem with most of the good looking guys. Its only when they open their mouths that you realize how foul they really are......Wait? What?? Did he just call me a waitress?? Why that.........
"Mind your language",she snapped at him."Im not a waitress. And even if I was,you have no right to speak to me like that." If only she had the power, she would have thrown him out of the party before he could say drink.
She caught sight of a waiter passing by and called to him "Waiter, give him a drink."
She turned back towards the foul, good looking...no!ugly guy."Enjoy your drink",she said with as much sarcasm as she could muster and flounced off failing to notice a slight smirk alongside his mouth.

A ghost of a smile crossed her lips.
Unlike their first meeting, she was quite pleased with the outcome of today's confrontation.
She took another sip of her tea.
A lot had changed between now and then.Their lives.....their fates.....themselves.
She resolutely ignored the memory of how it had felt when she had collided into him today.......for that split second when she had been in contact with him..She refused to remember the look in his eye and her reaction to it.
Denial.
It wouldnt be difficult, she told herself. She could do this. She could work with him.........without there being any sort of complication. They were adults now. They had already chosen their paths and nothing could be done now. They could surely work together.
Denial.She thrived in it.

I wonder what it would feel like to have elephants playing ping-pong in my head🤣 🤣🤣

I love the "feral" nature of this update 😳 😆 😆 absolutely and undoubtedly my favourite part of the whole ff so far 😍 😍 so alive with...desire and sexuality and ferocity - I love it, Sid 😍 the last exchange between AM reminded me of Lizzy & Darcy : the formal yet somehow uninhibited nature of their language, words spoken and words left silent 😍

More, please 😳 😆
