8. Adieu KPK
Her eyes scanned the room, searching for him, when she finally spotted him sitting in the corner of the hall, trying to avoid conversations with a very drunk Bunty, or as Rohit liked to call him, 'Parvati ka double'. Sonakshi smiled as she made her way across the hall and directed Bunty towards the bar.
"You left me alone" Rohit accused. "You know I am terrible at this."
She took of her heels and slid down on the ground next to him, heaving a sigh of relief as she stretched her legs in front of her.
"I am sorry" She said teasingly, "I did not expect to be bombarded by press or colleagues or co-workers at my show's wrap up party."
"Oh so it is your show now?" Rohit raised an eyebrow. "When I criticise your show, it's writers, producers, audience's fault, suddenly it's your show huh."
"Shhhhh" she replied. "Just admit it, you are turning into a grandpa already."
Rohit chuckled as he took her hand in his and interlaced his fingers with hers. "I was a grandpa when I was eighteen, you know, always the recluse. Who would have known everyone would get this hammered? Look, even the media people are drinking. And look there, that is your onscreen sasurji twerking."
" That is a sight I never even dreamt of seeing " Sonakshi laughed.
" Sad? " He asked after they watched the said sasur hurl into a guy's shoes. " It was your show for five years after all."
"Well, it did have it's share of up and downs, and I will miss having a routine, or whatever my schedule was, but I am equally looking forward to taking a couple of months off. I am exhausted Rohit. Plus, I am glad the show ended when it ended, my character is in a good place now."
"Your character died. That is a good place?" He had been there for the shoot of her last scene. "She died and then went to heaven and inside the actual Parvati devi, turns out she was a part of the divine entity all along. That is a good place." She hadn't told him the full ending yet, waiting to watch his reaction when he saw that bit of CGI but she figured she might as well tell him now, it was an absolute treat to watch him formulate words when mulling over the stupidity of the show.
" You are kidding-you are not kidding?" He changed his sentence midway after he saw her shaking her head. "Oh my god."
"Anyways, don't tell Vimmi or aunty, oh yeah aunty watches my show regularly."
"That I know. I overheard her conversation with Vimmi some months ago about how good you look with Arjun"
"Is that bitterness I sense? Green is not a good shade on you." She said as a matter of fact.
"Anyways, now that this project has ended, I have years of Netflix to catch on and a pretty sizable income to burn through."
"I can almost see your mom on the way to her next mental breakdown."
Sonakshi sighed. That was another can of worms she had to deal with, but she figured it can wait. Currently, she was content and that was enough for her. She swayed slightly to the blues that was softly being played by the DJ, hoping to shut this rowdy party down. It was way past their closing time but nobody was ready to leave. She could see Ravi and Sunita catching up in a corner, Shankar had come earlier with his family, had dinner and left. On one corner was an unfortunate mix of drunk channel representatives and a gaggle of writers trying to pitch their next project, the whole cast, old and new, cameos and side roles were present, the cast and crew, art department, dancers, spot boys, the chai dada from the road across, all were there, to bid adieu. It hadn't failed to amaze her, when she had entered the industry and was fresh and green, the sheer size and magnitude of people and effort that went into making such a project, and it didn't fail to amaze her now.
"What are you thinking about?" He asked, his thumb rubbing circles against the back of her hand.
"This place has really turned into a second home for me, a refuge of sorts." She really had thought she was done getting sentimental, but seeing them all together in one place, the people that made her show, made her eyes well up again. "I really won't be getting a call from the set tomorrow, I won't be seeing their faces daily. We have been through so many milestones Rohit, births, deaths, marriages and divorces, birthdays and anniversaries, hell even someone's kid passing their boards was celebrated." She chuckled. Rohit squeezed her hand softly and she shot him a grateful smile.
" You know, I am also thankful to the show." He said after a while.
" Yeah? How? " She asked, confused.
" The show gave me you. I met you because of this absurd show. And for that, I am forever thankful." He said simply.
She smiled as she leaned her head against his shoulders. "Me too." Sonakshi whispered.
