Chapter 5 – The Mystery Illness
Kaajjal sat at the dressing table furiously twisting her earring about in her right ear. For more than a minute she had been trying to fix it properly through her piercing but it kept veering off every time she thought she had succeeded. Anxiously glancing at the time her heart skipped a beat as she realised that she was getting behind. There were still so many things to do before she left for her first day at the school – there was the breakfast to make, Dev to see off and then she had to traverse the grassy path for most of the way into town. Ever since she had woken up that morning she had felt something was off balance. There was an unsettled feeling deep in her stomach and once or twice she had felt a wave of nausea threaten to rise up. Now she was getting ever more frustrated and her face was steadily turning crimson. Already little beads of sweat were dotted along her forehead as the heat from outside overpowered her and with an aggravated cry she threw the earring down on the dressing table and dragged her hands through her hair.
"Kaajjal, kya baat hai?"
Dev's concerned voice came from over her shoulder and turning her head she saw him advancing from the doorway, a worried frown creasing his brow. His deep brow eyes gazed solefully at her and as he gently rested a hand on her shoulder she gripped it with her own and placed her head on their joined hands, heaving a despiaring sigh. Dev raised his other hand a stroked it soothingly through her hair. He watched her earnestly as she closed her eyes with another sigh and he wondered fleetingly if perhaps it had been wrong to let her take up this job. She was always so worried for him and he knew she tried to do too much around the cottage, but never once had he seen her quite so close to falling apart under strain. He had always admired her strength, but today he felt she was lacking in her usual willpower. He let his fingers glide through her silky locks, cherishing this closeness and waiting for her to calm down before he attempted to speak to her again. Just the tenderness of his touch was gradually restoring her to her usual self and with her eyes closed she felt peace closing its balmy wings around her once more. Her lips even curved into a partial smile and lifting her head she gazed up at him with glowing eyes.
"Thank you Dev," she said to him.
"Kis liye?" he asked.
"For being there. You don't know what all troubles I have faced this morning," she sighed, turning back to the dressing table. "Just look at this!" she continued, gesturing to her earring. "Do you think I can get it to go in? And then I have so much to do before I leave and it's already half past seven."
"Bas, bas," Dev ordered her.
She opened her mouth to protest but he placed a finger over her lips to silence her. Their eyes met in the mirror: hers wide and astonished, his authoritative, his brows arched as a challenge to her to disobey him. She wrinkled her nose at him but said nothing, folding her arms in front of her chest to show her displeasure. Ignoring her huffiness Dev took the earring from the table and deftly placed it at her ear, taking care to slip it as painlessly as possible through her ear. With a proud smile he fastened and placing his arms on her shoulders leaned down so his chin rested on the top of her head and met her eyes in the mirror.
"There, what was so difficult about that?" he asked her with a grin.
"Hmm, so now we're trying to show our smartness are we?" she asked with a slight arch of her brow.
"No, just my devotion," he replied, his grin widening and a flash of glee glinting in his brown eyes.
Despite herself Kaajjal smiled and shook her head at him in amusement. Rising she ruffled his hair and walked from the room with a teasing wink that left his heart thumping. He followed her into the kitchen, gazing at her adoringly as she hurriedly prepared a breakfast, bubbling the chai and browning the toast in a matter of minutes.
"Here you go," she said as she set everything down on the table before him. "Now eat well, you have a long day in front of you and they make you work twice as hard in the small town radio stations as they do in the city."
Dev gave a chuckle at this lecture which earned him a sharp look from Kaajjal. Sitting down at the table she went to spread some honey on the toast when another wave of nausea made her freeze and a hand flew to her mouth as she began to choke.
"Kaajjal!" Dev cried, jumping to his feet and running over to her. "Kya hua?"
She coughed and swallowed hard, holding her throat and staring fixedly in front of her in an effort to dispel the sickness. In a few moments she was fine. Smiling weakly up at Dev, who held her by the shoulders and was staring anxiously at her, she waved her hand dismissively.
"I'm okay," she assured him. "It's nothing, honestly Dev. It's probably just a stomach bug. It will pass soon."
Dev was not convinced but the firm look in Kaajjal's eyes told him she would not talk about it any more and he returned to his seat quietly. He noted, however, that she didn't eat anything that morning and she took only two, very ginger sips of the chai. She was subdued and spoke little as they sat together, lost in a world of her own thoughts. He put it down to nerves about her first day and decided that by night she would be fine.
When he was ready to go she smiled brightly at him and kissed him affectionately on his cheek.
"Now remember," she told him, "Don't speak to everyone with a commanding tone, be nice to everyone and take care of yourself."
"Ji Mummy-ji," he joked.
She gave him a reprimanding hit on the arm and bundled him out the door.
"Okay, okay, I'm going," he laughed. "But first...another kiss please."
She sighed and rolled her eyes at his childish mood, placing her hands sternly on her hips and staring at him with arched eyebrows.
"Dev!" she scolded. "If you don't leave now you will be late and so will I."
"I'm going," he replied and began to walk into the courtyard.
She was just turning to go back inside when he bounded up and caught her by the upper arms. Giving out a startled cry she barely had time to register this event before he had spun her round and pushed her back against the door. Breathless and with a pounding heart she looked up at him with wide questioning eyes. He grinned playfully down at her, eyes sparkling with mirth, and leaning so close to her that when he spoke his breath fanned across her lips, making them tingle, he said,
"I can't leave without a kiss."
"Dev..." she began to protest in a quiet voice but he stopped any further words with his lips.
She closed her eyes and savoured the sweetness of the moment. When Dev pulled back his eyes were glowing with love and the depth she saw in them made her heart miss a beat. Her skin was prickling with lots of tiny electric shocks and her pulse was still jerking as he stepped back with a soft smile and mouthed goodbye to her. She walked to the door and watched him walk down the path with wistful eyes, wondering why he always ignited a fire inside her and then left her before it could spread and consume them both. Now she felt restless and it was with a heavy sigh that she turned back into the house to finish her chores before she had to leave. Just then a potent wave of nausea rushed up from her stomach and choking she dashed to the bathroom, unable this time to contain it. As she sat on the floor, resting her head against the cold porcelain of the cistern she lamented her fate that on the very day she was due to start working she fell sick. How she would pass the next few hours she had no idea.
