Ch 1. – "A New Beginning"
The hazy rays of the sun were filtering through the slats in the window shutters, slanting across the floor of the room in horizontal lines. Strips of shadow shifted between the sunbeams on the floor, but the movement was slow and lazy, as if they were in no hurry to get anywhere. It was not far into the morning but already a heat was gathering in the sun. Walking into the room, dressed in an elegant red and gold sari, Kaajjal stepped into the sunbeams on the floor, revelling in the warmth under her feet. Smiling she advanced to the window and threw the shutters open, letting in a whole swathe of dazzling light. Leaning her elbows on the ledge she breathed in the fresh, sweet air, bringing to her the distinct scent of flowers, a fragrance which always reminded her of her childhood. Gazing up at the cobalt blue sky with its patches of fluffy white clouds she recalled many summers spent running through the hills and meadows, tumbling through the grass in joyous abandon with only the sky and the goats for company. In those days life had been so simple, so innocent. Lying on her back in the cool grass, plucking the daisies and twirling their spindly stalks between her fingers she had been truly content. Now, as she stood at her window and looked out across Mussorie she began to feel a resurrection of that peace within.
"Good morning Jaan."
The deep baritone of Dev Pratap Singh echoed in her right ear as he curled his arms about her waist and nuzzled her affectionately. Though they had been married nearly two months still whenever Dev wrapped his arms about her she blushed shyly and lowered her eyes with a coy smile. The sound of his voice had a delightful shiver running down her spine, as it had done from the very beginning. Linking her fingers through his she turned her head towards him and smiled adoringly up at him. His deep brown eyes were shining with happiness and he looked more relaxed than she had seen him for months. Gazing at him she mused that he was looking handsomer than she could ever recall. The purple kurta that he wore brought out the sparkle in his eyes. It never ceased to amaze Kaajjal how after so many months she still found Dev as irresistible as she had when she first fell in love with him.
"Ah, so you've come at last," she said to him teasingly. "I was beginning to think you had gotten lost among the goats."
"Goats?" Dev responded with a puzzled frown. "You never told me you were inviting Aditya to stay."
"Devvv!" Kaajjal cried, hitting him on the arm, but laughing despite herself.
Dev grinned broadly and his eyes danced with mirth making Kaajjal blush again. Shaking her head in despair at him she turned round in his arms and linked her hands behind his neck, staring deeply into his eyes.
"Dev," she said in a serious tone. "You don't know how relieved I am that we've finally made it here. When we first made our plan to escape to Mussorie I never knew we would have to put our lives at risk."
Kaajjal's face became pale and an anxious frown marred her brow as she looked down at the floor, thinking over all the terrible events of the last few weeks.
"Who would ever have thought that our own kin would try to murder us?" she said sadly. "I always thought Karan bhaiya was so nice, but look at the lengths he went to just for the sake of some property."
"Kaajjal, why are you worrying yourself thinking about what's in the past?" Dev asked her. "We have left all that behind now."
Kaajjal sighed and looked back up at him with solemn eyes.
"Lekin Dev, we almost never made it," she reminded him. "If Nandini Bhabhi hadn't seen Karan escape as she left the factory then we might be dead by now. It's all thanks to her that we wore those bullet proof vests when we went to the mandir, else who knows what would have happened?"
Dev shook his head at her and placed a hand to her lips to silence her. She gazed up at him in wonder, searching his eyes for any sign of his grief, but there was nothing but solemnity in his countenance. His grief was buried deep within. The very fact that he has almost lost Kaajjal was too painful for him to even contemplate and so he had pushed it all to the back of his mind.
"Kaajjal," he said gravely. "Bas karo. We are alive, that's all that matters. Karan thinks we are dead; no one except Nandini knows where we are, and we know she will take our secret to the death. It's all over Kaajjal; we are free to live the life we always dreamed of. Now it's just you and me, and this small cottage."
Dev grinned at her and arched his eyebrows impishly. Despite all her anxiety the sight of Dev cajoling her made her lips burst into a wide smile and her eyes shone once more with happiness. Running a hand through Dev's soft hair she leaned her forehead against his and sighed deeply, closing her eyes to savour the moment.
"You're right Dev," she agreed. "Now there is no one but us. We can live the rest of our lives in peace, treasuring moments such as these."
Now it was her turn to look at him with dancing eyes and a mischievous grin. Dev frowned at her, wary of the glee in her expression.
"What are you thinking Mrs Pratap Singh?" he asked her.
"Do you know Dev, when I woke up this morning I decided that I am going to make three promises to you for the rest of our lives," she told him.
"And what are they?" he asked, intrigued.
"Number one: I promise to always wear a sari because I know how much you love to see me in a sari."
Dev arched his eyebrows wickedly and nodded his head.
"True," he agreed. "Go on."
"Number two: I promise that if I ever see any goats I will come running as fast as I can to you and seek shelter in your arms."
"Ah, I like the sound of that!" Dev exclaimed.
They both laughed, their eyes glittering with delight. Wrapping her arms about his neck, Kaajjal leaned very close to Dev so that their lips were only inches apart.
"And number three," she whispered. "I promise to always love you."
For a moment Dev was choked with emotion. Tears glistened in his eyes and he gazed wondrously at her, one hand resting at the side of her head, her hair tangled about his fingers.
"And I promise to always love you Kaajjal," he told her.
They smiled at one another, love glowing on their faces, and then folded one another in a tight hug, so passionate that tears streaked their faces. This was the start of their new life and they were determined to let nothing spoil it ever again.
So there you go guys. Hope you liked it. Do let me know if I should carry on.
Anu 😊
