Chapter 7 – Dev's Surprise
Dev sat outside in the small waiting area of the doctor's surgery, anxiously wringing his hands together and straining his ears for any sign of noise from within. His heart leapt at every sudden noise and whenever the sound of footsteps approaching reached his ears his head would jerk up and his eyes would be fixed in anticipation on the end of the corridor. When a nurse or a porter turned the corner and smiled at him, walking breezily along without a care in the world, his heart would sink and he would clench his hands into frustrated fists. The suspense was eating away inside him like a canker and he was restless. Every five minutes he had to get up and pace about the corridor, walking from the seats to the door of the doctor's room and back again, flopping back against the wall with a heavy sigh and pulling a hand through his hair. Time seemed to be ticking by at an excruciatingly slow pace; he felt as if he had been waiting for hours, though in reality it could only have been about half an hour.
When the door opened finally he jumped to his feet and grabbed the doctor's arm, peering apprehensively into his face.
"Doctor Saab, meri patni kya hua?" he asked him breathlessly. "Is she okay? Can I see her?"
The doctor smiled benevolently at him and placed a hand on his shoulder, his thin and wizened lips curving into a crooked smile.
"She is absolutely fine," he assured Dev. "There is nothing to worry about. I think you should go and speak to her; she is waiting inside."
There was a strange sparkle in the doctor's eyes as he patted Dev's shoulder and as he walked off he was smiling away to himself. Confused Dev watched him for a few seconds, wondering what on earth could be so amusing. His heart was still restless and his mind still held a thousand fears for Kaajjal's safety, despite all the doctor's assurances. Pushing open the door of the room he stuck his read round it and his eyes swept the room for Kaajjal. She was sitting up in the small bed, her hands folded one on top of the other on her stomach. Her eyes were focused on her hands and there was an unusually vibrant glow on her face, coupled with a bright smile which could only be described as elated. Dev's heart missed a beat as he wondered what could have happened to make both her and the doctor so happy. He had never seen such enchantment in her eyes as he did now when she looked up at him and the way her face broke into an ecstatic smile perplexed him.
"Dev, aaye," she said, her voice ringing with happiness.
Frowning slightly he walked into the room and sat down beside her on the edge of the bed. He reached out and took one of her hands, curling his fingers round it protectively. With his other hand he brushed back a strand of hair that had fallen across her face, gently tucking it behind her ear and gazing down at her with deep concern. His worried countenance amused her and she grinned up at him with shining eyes.
"Kaajjal, tum thik to hai na?" he asked her, rubbing her hand. "I was so worried when you blacked out. Kya hua? What did the doctor say?"
Kaajjal's cheeks deepened to a crimson shade and she lowered her twinkling eyes shyly for a moment, that joyous smile never leaving her lips. This odd behaviour perplexed Dev and he became more anxious, squeezing her hand tightly.
"Kaajjal, what is this?" he demanded. "Tell me, what is wrong with you?"
"Dev," she laughed softly, lifting her eyes to his. "There is nothing wrong with me."
"Then why are you here? Why did you faint?" he protested. "Kaajjal whatever it is, no matter how bad or serious an illness, you must tell me. Together we will get through it."
She didn't mean to but she laughed heartily at his grave words, her eyes dancing with mirth as she shook her head at him. Insulted Dev's frown deepened, creasing his forehead, and when she put a hand up to her mouth to try and stop her giggles he rose to his feet, leaving her hand and went storming across the room to the door.
"Dev!" she called, stopping him in his tracks.
He did not turn but he stood, one hand on the door handle, waiting for her to speak.
"Dev, come back please," she beseeched him. "I have something to tell you."
"I'm listening," he replied grumpily.
"Uff! Dev tum bhi nah? I can't tell you when you're standing like that," she rebuked him fondly. "Chalo, sit beside me again."
"Whatever you have to say you can say it now or I'm leaving," he told her, still sulking. "I have to get back to work."
So saying he began to open the door. Kaajjal panicked and shouted out, though she hadn't intended to.
"Dev, I'm pregnant!" she cried.
He froze for a moment, his hand on the door handle, as her words echoed in his ears. Slowly, as if he were in a dream, he turned his head back to her and looked over at her with a dazed look.
"Kya?" he asked breathlessly.
Kaajjal smiled brightly at him, tears of joy shimmering in her eyes.
"I'm pregnant," she repeated.
Never had Dev felt so many emotions all at once. A dart of joy rushed through his veins, breaking his lips into a wide smile. His heart missed a delerious beat and his breath caught in his throat as elation choked him. Tears of bliss welled up in his eyes and as he gazed over at Kaajjal she could see a mixture of emtions chasing one another across his face – shock, joy, amazement. His head was spinning and he couldn't quite believe this was real and not some beautiful dream. Wide eyed he took a step forward to the bed and asked,
"Really? You are really pregnant?"
"Haan Dev!" she laughed.
Then he startled her by letting out a loud whoop and jumping up in the air, punching it with his fists. He ran a hand through his hair, his eyes staring with astonishment and he gave a delighted, incredulous laugh. Kaajjal beamed up at him, the tears silently spilling over from her eyes as she watched the joy on Dev's face. He ran over to her and hugged her tightly, taking the breath from her lungs. He was breathing quickly and his heart raced as he buried his face in her hair. Smiling braodly she wrapped her arms about him and looked up at the ceiling, uttering a prayer of thanks to Gannu Bhaiya. As she did so she felt a cold drop of water at her neck and frowning she pulled back from Dev, peering anxiously at him. Tears were rolling down his cheeks and her heart missed a terrified beat at the sight of them.
"Dev, kya hua?" she asked him, running her fingers through his hair soothingly. "Why are you crying?"
"I'm just so happy Kaajjal," he told her, linking his fingers through hers. "I never thought it possible to be this happy. It's all because of you that I known what joy is. All because of you Kaajjal."
"Dev," she said softly, her tears choking her voice. "You know you are my whole world. And now we have a symbol of our love," she added, placing her free hand on her stomach.
Dev placed his hand over hers and they both smiled tenderly at one another. Leaning over he kissed her softly on the forehead. With a sense of contentment he placed his head on her shoulder and the two of them sat like that, hands entwined, sharing the sweetest moment of their lives so far.
