Hello once more all you Dev-Kaajjal fans 😃 I'm back with my next installment for my ff. It looks a lot longer here than what it did when I wrote it 😕 😆 This part is all about Dev finding a job, so hope you all enjoy it. Do leave comments and feel free to offer any suggestions. 😊

Chapter 3 - Dev's New Start

Rain came pattering down outside in thick sheets, drumming into the ground with a steady beat. The whoosh of the curtain of rain drops as it swept over the cottage made Kaajjal shudder as she gazed out of the window. On the hob the chai was beginning to bubble and its hiss seemed to be in competition with the pleting of the rain as it hit off the glass window pane. Titling her head back Kaajjal turned her eyes up to the murky sky, a canopy of steely grey clouds that hung low over the town. The branches of the trees in the courtyard were bending over as the leaves doubled under the weight of the water accumulating in their shallow hollows. Every now and again they would unleash a waterfall of torrent raindrops onto the unsuspecting goats grazing underneath. This comical sight brought a smile to Kaajjal's face and as she poured the chai she wondered why they persisted on standing under the tree when they were sure to get wet again.
When she entered the dining area Dev was engrossed in his perusal of the newspapers, intently pouring over some article on the state of the stock market. She smiled amusedly at him and placed the chai down in front of him with a small cough to alert him. He looked up with a slightly surprised expression, his eyes dilating and deepening in their shade momentarily. Seeing her grinning down at him his face creased into a tender smile and folding the paper he leaned over and kissed her on the forehead.
"You're looking very pretty today," he told her with a glint in his eyes as she sat down at the table. "Is today special?" he asked, looking worried.
"Of course today is special," she replied, rolling her eyes at him. "Come on Dev, how can you forget? You have your interview for the radio station today."
"I hadn't forgotten that," he assured her.
"Good," she answered. "But Dev, I'm worried about you going in all this rain. Your suit will get soaked through and you might catch a terrible cold."
Anxiety had her brow furrowing and she looked at him as if he were about to stake his life. Dev couldn't hold back the mirthful laughter and his eyes glittered with it as he threw his head back and chuckled away to himself. Indignant Kaajjal rose from the table and shot him a scathing look.
"Go ahead and laugh at me!" she snapped. "I apologise for being such a caring wife. Go! Go on, go and get wet and catch neumonia!"
Tossing her head in the air she went to stalk off but Dev caught her wrist and pulled her down onto his lap, wrapping his arms about her tightly. Displeased she pushed at him, insisting he let her go, but he ignored her complaints and rested his chin on her shoulder with a broad smile.
"Rooth na jaana..." he began to croon very softly.
The velvety tone of his voice melted her anger instantly and blushing she lowered her eyes, smiling coyly.
"Dev!" she sighed. "Tum bhi nah!"
"I'm sorry for laughing Kaajjal," he apologised. "Lekin kya kare? Sometimes I can't believe how lucky I was to get a wife like you."
She gave a small laugh and jumped up from his lap. Turning she smiled down at him with t
winkling eyes.
"Why thank you Mr Dev Pratap Singh," she began in a playful tone, "But right now this perfect wife has to perform her wifely duties and point out to you that you are running late."
Rising Dev collected his jacket and briefcase. Kaajjal approached him and preformed a small aarti for his success before straightening his tie and dusting down the shoulders of his jacket.
"There," she said with satisfaction. "You look perfect. Now remember to take the umbrella and avoid all the puddles on the way there. Oh, and Dev, please take care of your health."
"Kaajjal!" he laughed, "I'm only going for an interview not to some forgein country. I'll be fine and I promise, no puddles and no getting wet, okay?"
She made a sound of agreement, pursing her lips and moving her head from side to side in reluctant acquiescence. Relieved Dev gave her a smile, kissed her quickly and then left. Standing at the door she watched him disappear into the curtain of rain with an anxiously thumping heart. When he had been engulfed in the murkiness of the shower she gazed up at the sky, frowning at the darkness of the clouds, which seemed to be multiplying by the minute. Uttering a silent prayer for Dev's safety and his success she went back inside, knowing that the next few hours would drag by until his return.
Gradually the morning wore away and the rain evaporated. Around mid-day one shaft of golden sunlight fought its way through the army of purple clouds. Like a soldier struggling through the trenches it tore through the thick mass of cloud and with triumphant pride beamed down at the earth. Slowly more and more of the cloud receded and eventually a round and hazy sun was visible in the sky. The odd grey cloud floated by but patches of deep azure began to appear like missing pieces in a jigsaw puzzle. The stickness of the morning turned to sweltering heat and as Kaajjal waited on the porch for any sign of Dev down the grassy path she had to keep fanning herself with a braod leaf that had fallen to the ground during the storm.
After what felt like hours waiting impatiently she finally glimpsed a figure far down the track. Her heart did a somersault and her pulse began to race in expectation. As the person drew nearer she recognised them as Dev and with a delighted smile and shining eyes she rushed forward to meet him. She ran up to him breathlessly, shouting out his name and waving. When he spotted her his whole face broke into a wide and joyful smile and as she met him he caught her round the waits and spun her round dizzyingly, while she half-laughed, half-yelped in surprise. Placing her back on her feet he grinned down at her with wide, sparkling eyes as she waited with baited breath for him to speak.
"Well?" she demanded.
"They gave me the job!" he cried.
She shrieked and launched herself into his arms.
"Oh Dev!" she cried. "I'm so happy!"
"There were only three people who turned up for the interview," Dev explained, as she pulled back and smiled up at him. "And they told me that I was far more qualified than the others. I can't believe it Kaajjal. I'm actually going to be working again."
"I knew you could do it Dev," she told him, grasping his hands tightly in her own. "I just knew it."
"It's all thanks to you Kaajjal," he said, gazing deep into her eyes. "If you hadn't believed in me, if you weren't with me then I would never have had the courage to start again. Only you can make me strong Kaajjal. Only you."
Tears clouded her eyes as she gazed up at him and when he folded her into his arms a tear spilled silently and rolled down her cheeks. She clung to him as if should she let go he would slip away from her. Looking up at the sky she silently thanked God for being so benevolent. She knew in that one moment that no matter what happened in her life from now on everything would be okay in the end. Life was slowly coming back on track; she had gotten the home she always dreamed of, Dev was with her and now he had his job. Yes, she thought as she wrapped her arms closer round him, now everything was going to be alright.

That's it for just now. Thanks for reading and I hope you liked it.

Hello to one and all...I'm back again with my ff 😛 Well it seems quite long again 😕 and I'm not sure just how I managed it! 😆 But word of warning, I wrote this while getting my ears blasted by drills all around me as the walls of my house are being insulated today, so if there are any mistakes or it sounds really quite rubbish then that's most probably why 😕 Anyways, here you are:

Chapter 4 – The Music Festival (19/09/07)

"Dev!"
The sound of Kaajjal frantically calling his name had Dev's heart missing a trepid beat and he jumped up from where he had been sitting at the table with fear stalking over all his limbs. It was early evening and when he arrived home from his first day as one of the assisting MDs at Massoorie radio station he had found a note from Kaajjal telling him she had gone to the market to collect special ingredients for his dinner. This had not unduly worried him and though the hour had been passing by rather slowly and the first faint glimmer of sunset was appearing at the most westerly edge of the sky he had not felt it time enough to worry. Now, however, hearing the animation in her voice his mind leapt to the conclusion that something had surely happened to her while she was out. Anxiety gnawing away at him he rushed through into the hallway and nearly collided with Kaajjal as she came dashing towards the kitchen. She just managed to come to a standstill in front of him, grabbing his arm and panting vigorously. Her face was flushed a deep scarlet and she held her side with her other hand, unable to speak for a few moments through her windedness. This state of hers only alarmed him the more and taking her shoulders he peered worriedly down into her face.
"Kaajjal, kya hua?" he asked her.
She looked up at him and there was a glint of humour in her large eyes. A smile, which Dev found perplexing under the circumstances, curved her lips and she shook her head at him with a mirthful laugh.
"Kuch nahin Dev," she assured him. "Kyun? What did you think?"
"Mai...never mind; if nothing happened then why are you shouting out so frantically?" he asked her.
"I've just heard in the town that there is to be a music festival tonight," she explained. "There is going to be dancing and people playing sitar and guitar. And I was thinking, since my husband is one of the MDs at the radio station now, we should go and check it out. What do you think?"
Dev stared back at her with an incredulous expression, his eyebrows lifted in a high arch.
"Kaajjal, you can't be serious," he said with a small laugh. "You want me to go and sit with all the towns' people for some hippy festival?"
"Uff Dev, it's not a hippy festival, it's a music festival!" she corrected him. "And anyway, we haven't been out properly the whole time we have been here and I really want to go. Some of my old friends might be there and I really would like to introduce them to you. Please Dev, don't be stubborn. Please agree to go. For me?"
She pouted up at him with pleading eyes that melted his normally stern resolve. Just what magic she had he did not know, but whenever she looked at him with those wide, beseeching eyes, like a child, he always softened and gave in. Sighing he moved his head by way of agreement, bringing a delighted smile to her face.
"Thank you Dev!" she cried, throwing her arms about him. "You are the best husband in the world."
She accompanied this statement with a kiss on his cheek and then bounded away nimbly to the kitchen where she began to prepare dinner, humming away contentedly to herself. Dev watched her with an amused smile on his lips, musing that he was the lucky one to have a wife like her. From arrogant and aloof she had turned him into an agreeable and warm hearted person and there was not a day went by that he did not thank God for sending her to him.
Later that evening as the sun dipped low over the earth, casting the sky into a tapestry of reds, yellows and oranges, Dev and Kaajjal found themselves entering the yard where the music festival was taking place. The evening was pleasant with a gentle, balmy breeze that wafted over everyone's heads and kept them from feeling either too cold or too warm. A small bonfire had been lit in anticipation of the impending darkness, and its small orange sparks crackled away in the background as Dev and Kaajjal took a seat on the right side of the yard, a few feet from the fire. A throng of people had gathered and their excited chatter carried on the night air, creating an audible buzz, like a horde of bees had suddenly flown by. Women in brightly coloured saris gossiped while their men stood about arguing over political issues. Some privileged children chased one another about the yard, laughing gleefully. One of them nearly crashed into Dev as he walked across to the seat where Kaajjal sat with two of her old school friends. The urge to reprimand the child was strong but when his eye caught Kaajjal's and she gave him a stern warning look he thought better of it and made his way across to her with a disgruntled look.
"I don't know why I let you drag me here," he grumbled as he handed her the drink she had asked for.
"Dev," she said sternly. "If you are going to sit here moaning all night I will leave you to it. Just enjoy the music and try not to get irritated with everything, okay?"
He sighed but she ignored him and went back to chatting with her friends. A short while later a group of men started up a rousing tune with their dhols and some of the local women began to dance about the bonfire. Kaajjal's friends grabbed her hands and pulled her up, though she laughingly protested. She had no choice in the matter and glancing over at Dev she smiled and joined in with the others. Dev watched her, mesmerised, as she swung about nimbly, laughing and enjoying herself for the first time in months. Her yellow and orange shaded sari glowed under the similar hued sky, making her seem like a flame twirling round and round. Overhead the sun had nearly sunk down into the hills; only the very tip of his golden crown was visible now. Vibrant streaks of crimson and amber shot out across the sky, blending together and providing a dazzling background to the women dancing about the bonfire. The hues of the sky seemed to be reflected in Kaajjal's eyes and when she looked across at Dev with her warm smile, his heart fluttered and he marvelled at how beautiful she was.
As the song died away she came back over and sat beside him with a tender smile. Eyes glowing with amazement he brushed his fingers through her silky hair as she stared back at him in bemusement.
"Kya hua?" she asked him with a frown.
He shook his head.
"I just realised how beautiful you really are today," he told her quietly.
"Dev!" she replied embarrassedly, lowering her eyes. "Stop it, everyone will notice."
"Let them," he told her. "I want the whole world to know that you are my wife and just how much I love you."
His words made her heart flutter and she looked up at him, gazing deep into his dark eyes, which shone as brightly as the dying rays of the sun. In them she could see reflected the flames from the bonfire, and it was as if those very flames burned in his eyes. A shiver of delight ran down her spine and when she smiled at him it was one of wonderment. His fingers still threaded through her hair, causing her nerve ends to tingle and she could feel herself sinking under the spell in his glance.
Her moment was broken, however, by the sudden loud stringing of a guitar. Looking up she saw a teenage boy sitting on the other side of the fire, idly strumming away at a guitar. His notes were not all in key and he seemed to be frustrated, frowning deeply whenever he made a mistake. Smiling Kaajjal turned back to Dev and told him she would only be a minute, then rising she walked over to the boy and stopped before him with a friendly smile.
"Hello," she greeted him. "Main hoon Kaajjal."
She held out her hand to him but he turned his head away. Undeterred she sat down beside him and smiled warmly at him.
"That's a lovely guitar," she said. "Looks like it's a top model."
"Hmm, my aunt gifted it to me," he replied, then coloured as he realised he had spoken.
"May I have a try?" she asked.
At first he hesitated but after running his eyes thoroughly over her face he decided she was nice enough and handed her the guitar as if it were some precious ornament. Kaajjal took it and placing it on her knee she closed her eyes and began lightly to strum at its strings. Everyone stopped to watch her, enchanted by the melodious tune she played. Dev watched her in a mixture of pride and awe. The flames of the fire flickered gently over her face, bringing out a glow of pleasure in the features of her face. When she began to sing her voice was sweet and the happiness she felt within radiated out in her song. Lost in her own world she hardly noticed that everything had fallen silent. The first she knew was when she opened her eyes and saw the faces of the towns people turned towards her. Blushing she handed the guitar back to the teenager, who now gazed at her in admiration.
"Where did you learn to play like that?" he asked her. "You're really good. Can you teach me?"
"Why thank you, but I'm not sure I deserve such praise," she replied. "But yes, I'll surely teach you. Here, hold it like this."
She showed him the correct way of positioning the guitar and helped him with his strumming, encouraging him all the time with smiles and praise. Dev was enthralled in watching her when someone came and sat next to him. It was a middle aged man, balding and with tired lines about his kindly eyes, and he greeted Dev with a bright smile.
"Isn't she wonderful?" he said. "I have never seen such natural talent before. Is she your wife?"
"Yes she is," Dev replied proudly. "Kaajjal."
"I wonder, if it's not too much of a liberty, if I could speak to you about her?" the man asked. "My name is Bharat Tejwani and I run the local school here. Tell me, Mr...?"
"Dev. Dev Pratap Singh."
"Tell me Mr Singh, would you at all mind if your wife were to work?" asked Mr Tejwani.
"No, in fact, when we lived in Mumbai she was MD of our business," Dev explained.
"Then may I ask if you could speak to her about coming to teach at our school?" Mr Tejwani enquired. "We have recently lost our music teacher and seeing your wife's natural capability assures me that no one else could fill the position as well as she."
Dev smiled and shook the man's hand, telling him he had no objections and he would speak to Kaajjal directly. Mr Tejwani's face lit up like a fairy light and amidst much gratitude and officiousness he took his leave of Dev. When Kaajjal came back over Dev stood up with a wide grin and took both her hands in his, his eyes shining with happiness. Bemused she looked up at him with a slight frown and suspicious eyes.
"Dev, have you been drinking?" she asked him.
"No, why would I do that?" he answered. "No, I have some news for you."
"Khabar? Mere liye?" she repeated.
"How would you feel about teaching music, here, in Massoorie?" he asked her.
"I hadn't ever thought about it," she admitted. "But I do like working with the children and music is one of my passions. But why?"
"Well," he said, drawing her into his arms, "I have just been asked if you would like to start teaching music at the local school."
Kaajjal gasped, her eyes flying wide open and she stared up at Dev in trembling anticipation.
"Really?" she breathed. "And...what did you say?"
"I said that as long as my wife was happy so was I," he told her.
"Oh Dev!" she cried, throwing her arms about him and hugging him tightly. "You mean, I can become a teacher?" she asked, pulling back and looking deep into his shining eyes.
Framing her face with his hands he smiled fondly at her.
"Kaajjal, you can do whatever makes you happy," he told her. "I don't mind what it is as long as you find happiness. Your happiness is my happiness."
Tears welled up in her eyes and a joyful smile spread across her lips as she stared back at him.
"Thank you Dev," she said, "For having so much faith in me."
He smiled back at her and they hugged one another closely. The flames of the fire were burning brightly now as the sky turned an inky black, dotted with vividly glittering stars. Standing beside the bonfire the silhouettes of Dev and Kaajjal seemed to be like a frozen picture in time, a sculpture of two lovers who had pledged a life together. Those on the other side of the fire could not be entirely certain that they were real and ever after that occasion people would always talk of the extraordinary vision they had seen by the bonfire; only Dev and Kaajjal knew the reality.

Hope you all enjoyed it 😃 Do leave your comments, I really enjoy seeing what people have to say and I appreciate everything you write. 😊
