I'm hardly in the mood to post what I like about this show, but obviously, there is something that keeps me not only watching it, but writing the updates as well. So let me recap, speaking for myself.

What turned me on to this show originally was the concept of a girl supporting her own family, instead of being focussed on marriage - I found it a refreshing change from the continuous refrain in all serials of girls to simply grow up & marry. Initially, this show did show that promise, and I was happy that Jyoti was just pacing herself until her family could stand on its own feet, at which point she'd marry & move on. At any rate, the likes:

  • Suday - Sudha's DID problem, how they showed it, the Devika saga and Sudha's romance w/ Uday, which was sweet to watch
  • Deepu's reformation, after he got a new job, and Dadi's improvement after Jyoti got married. I particularly admire Deepu's ability to move on beyond Panchi
  • Sushma's improvement, after she finally left Brij for good
What spoilt this otherwise idylic scene was Padma - not only did she treat Jyoti as a step daughter, but she allowed Sudha to become a basket case as well. Normally, I don't root for nice looking single girls in serials to marry - I'd much rather see them develop an independent career, but seeing the way Sudha was treated by not just Padma, but by Dadi & Deepu as well, made it look a lot more like she'd be better off in a sasural. Ironically, this idea was re-inforced by CM at the time (b4 she knew Jyoti), when seeing Sudha return her credit card @ a market, she thought that Sudha might be an ideal DIL, except for the fact that Uday was more interested in Devika. I daresay that had Jyoti never entered the family, CM would have been fine w/ Sudha marrying Uday.

If it hadn't been for Padma's step-motherly treatment, Jyoti actually would have been an ideal daughter, w/o ever having to marry. After all, this is someone who was and is incapable of leaving her maayka alone (e.g. when she insisted on filing the police case against Brij, instead of letting Deepu handle it). Had Padma not screwed w/ the rishtas, but simply asked Jyoti to stay within the family b'cos she was needed, that might have been something they could have agreed on. B'cos, as Jyoti herself once noted, she's a good daughter but an unfit wife/bahu.

The other thing I liked about it was the display of Sudha's DID problem, and how Devika opened up for her a new avenue to Uday - that was something I was really rooting for. Because in this entire serial, this is the only romance that really felt good - Brij/Jyoti was always false, Brij/Susham was abusive, Deepu/Panchi was fraudulent and mismatched and Pankaj/Jyoti was done under duress, w/o Jyoti getting a chance to really know her in-laws before agreeing to this marriage.

At the current time, the only positive thing left right now is conceivably Sandeep/Poonam's relationship & romance. I was hoping a lot from Suday, but they only show her wallowing - I wonder how much more can Uday take of this constant crying from Sudha, and constant abuse from CM.

While it's fine to list our likings, it's worth noting that almost all of them have been spoilt by other events in the serial. Sudha's opportunity for happiness, for instance, has been totally soured by CM's disillusionment w/ Jyoti - had Jyoti never entered that family, Sudha would probably have been fine. The reason CM hates Jyoti is not b'cos of her background, but rather, b'cos Jyoti has replaced her as Pankaj's first love, and also, Jyoti steals the limelight from CM in public, which the latter can't stand. CM doesn't have such an issue w/ Sudha.

The biggest spoiler in the serial was Sushma - eloping w/ Brij, and becoming a constant source for Jyoti to worry. The first time I had negative vibes about this serial was when Sushma started acquiescing to Brij, and the turning point was when she became pregnant and had an abortion. Her attitude change was also a downer. The second time was the night that Sushma & Padma revealed to Jyoti how she was hated, w/ the result that Jyoti left home and a few days later, essentially eloped w/ Pankaj, opening up her year of misery, and spoiling Sudha's future w/ Uday as well. The reason this family is so disfunctional is primarily Padma, & secondarily Jyoti.

At this point, I don't see things improving, unless at a certain point, CM is expelled from the Vashisth mansion, Pankaj regains his eyesight (or else he'll always have a complex) and Padma is divorced by KK. I do hope Poonam can make Padma see the error of her ways, but I doubt it. If at some point in this serial (and I mean soon, not 6 months later) all this happens, culminating in Jyoti's reconciliation w/ a non-blind Pankaj, Sushma re-marrying (I don't want her to be a single parent) and everybody getting to a point where they can live 'happily ever after', it will have been worth it.
At any rate, this is the last saas-bahu serial I'm watching.

Okay, I thought of something else I liked.
I liked how the serial has covered Poonam. Normally, they show the weddings w/ all the ceremony, making it look all romantic and everything. Sometimes, w/ some of these saas bahu shows, they may go directly into the persecution of the new brides. But here, I like how Poonam's character changed - from a dear girl to a blushing bride to now an inconsiderate and insensitive brat. I do however think that her character profile is atypical - most parents would refuse to marry off their daughters until they are sure that they can at least do those basic things expected of a bahu. Plus even if a person is self centered, she does not make another person in a strange house work for her, the way Poonam was willing to w/ Jyoti.
Normally, just by seeing the former - the romancing, the wedding, etc, one would think everything is hunky dory w/ the girl. But Poonam, who looked pretty normal until the wedding was complete, changed instantly the next day from the moment she asked Jyoti for her room. I like the way this contrast was shown.
I also liked the way Poonam's inadequacies were shown - like her total inability and unwillingness to cook. Normally, this is something a bahu loves to take over - remember Sudha? When guys are looking for brides, they sometimes gloss over it, as Deepu obviously has. What is surprising about this storyline, though, is how this went under the Sharma radar, and they are only now discovering Poonam's shortcomings. But aside from that, it's nice to see them highlight the contrast b/w the pretty picture before marriage, and the ugly one after.
