Last things first - when Jyoti saw Uday applying sindur on Sudha's head, she was shocked, and her first words to them was one of criticism, not support. So your last statement is inaccurate - Jyoti did scold them at first, and when Uday was thinking of leaving w/o going home, she scolded him again. Regardless of what you think of Jyoti, it's wrong to say that she supported their eloping. Yeah, she did sympathize w/ Uday for being miserable @ his impending marriage, but she was fully supportive of that marriage, since it had already been fixed. The only reason Uday called Jyoti in the first place was that Sudha refused to marry w/o the blessings of elders, so Uday picked the person Sudha most worshipped, and asked her to be there. Otherwise, he'd have been perfectly happy to execute this alone. Of course, once they're married, there isn't much she can do other than bless them. When someone goes through sacred rituals and has the blessings of the gods, it's useless and mean to curse them
Second - Uday was not the one who asked Jyoti to bat for him. Padma was the one who went forward and slapped Sudha, and that was Jyoti's to handle. When Jyoti was getting abused by cm, Uday did intervene and tell her that the faults in question were all his, and cm shut him up, told him that their relationship was over, and stormed out of the room. How can you say that he expected Jyoti to argue his case, particularly when he knew how much she's hated by CM.
Also, did you watch the wedding episode? The first half was Sudha refusing to marry him, and insisting that he return - nowhere was she in favor of this. It was only after he told her that if she didn't say yes, he'd just end his life that she started moving his way. Even then, she wanted to wait for an elder to come and bless them, and only went ahead b'cos the pundits insisted that the auspicious moments were all passing. Once that started, it was sorta automatic, and Sudha was married before she even realized it.
And Padma as an example to Sudha? Don't make me laugh!!! She would have done better to refuse to marry KK, instead of treating her 2 neices as dirt, and pampering her son and daughter. I do blame KK for pressurizing Padma into marrying him - that's one thing he did wrong, and boy, is he paying the price. From today, it's all Padma's household - none of Lata's kids are there any more. Padma always hated both Jyoti & Sudha from the bottom of her heart, and resents it whenever she has to be nice to them. Otherwise, when Sudha passed her exams, Padma was the lone voice suggesting that Sudha be given away in marriage and gotten rid of. Well, now Sudha is married and gotten rid of and no longer a burden, so what's her problem?
Also, let's look at this from Sudha's POV. She's been abused all her life, and only after Uday actively entered it has it been looking brighter for her, w/ him giving her bike lessons, taking her to the library, being the lone person who tends to her when she visits his place, et al. Also, how can she ever forget that he saved her from being raped - that alone would have earned him the right to her. Also, had Sudha married someone else, but kept turning into Devika and going back to a married Uday, how would that have been a healthy situation?
And let's look at it from Uday's POV as well. He's been dating Devika, started having doubts about her, and started liking Sudha. Already, his family and Sudha's family have a marital bridge b/w them in the form of Pankaj & Jyoti. He admires Jyoti for marrying Pankaj despite his handicap, and resolves that he can return the same favor to Sudha. How is this anything but generousity, aside from his love for her? Which other family, knowing Sudha's condition (and they would, since she was in the news) would accept her? Uday didn't even dishonor either family this way, and had it not been for CM's ego and Minal pimping her bro to keep her egotistical FIL happy, this would not even have been an issue. Both KK and Dadi admired Uday, and thought that he'd be a fine suitor for Sudha; the only reason they opposed it recently was b'cos of what they discovered about CM. Similarly, in Uday's family, Pankaj was in favor of it, and MN&G both liked Sudha, and gave her refuge when her own family refused to take her back.
The point here for Uday wouldn't have been sacrificing his love for his family, but allowing himself to be pimped by his sister for that asshold FIL of hers. That's by no means admirable. And Sudha wasn't even guilty of anything - she went there to end things w/ Uday.
As for Jyoti's marriage to Pankaj, that she did b'cos she was at the time vulnerable - otherwise, she never found out anything about his family, and ran into CM when it was too late. If anything, I'd say that Jyoti's marriage to Pankaj, or even Jyoti's marriage in the first place, has been a mistake, as she's always obsessed over Sushma and getting her away from Brij, and at the same time, not telling her in-laws about her.
Finally, Sushma. Given how she stole Brij from Jyoti, it would normally have been surprising that she didn't target Uday, but then again, there isn't much you can do when you're pregnant. But I'm glad that she did what she did, b'cos otherwise, Sudha would have just let Uday go, Uday would have gone, and Sudha would have relapsed and probably died very quickly.
