It's basically understood... that a prince is not going to allow one general to kill another general and his soldiers just because of some dispute over a girl (who's not even a royal) and a few lands... no way... it takes many years and a lot of investment into making powerful generals - the men who are going to lead his armies...

In the bigger picture, generals are important for a royal to maintain his power... a prince will try and avoid getting rid of a general unless there is no other way left...
