All right thanks to you girls bringing up the topic, I spent the last three hours trying to find out how men and women of noble ranks bathed in Medieval India 🤣

Most commoners would use river Ghats (there used to be separate ghats for men/women) or step wells, canals etc...

HAVELIS
Had bathing pavilions either near their bedrooms or near the gardens... for the important people.

But (sorry girls) hamam was definitely not there in any haveli photos or any records that I came across... apart from mughal emperor having his private hamam... all other hamams were public bath houses... so yes... you'd have to strike that thought out 😆

Besides Khan Sahib is a simple man of the soil... he is not like Jalal - not going to encourage women (or men) to spend half a day filling up a pool with petals and scents... and soaking in it with a smirk as he plans his day!😆
The former is very matter-of-fact, the latter is very stylish! But, bathing pavilions could still be exquisite places 😉

I've managed to do some investigating and find some photos of how they might have looked

This bathing chamber in Hampi (Vijayanagar) is built in the Indo-Islamic style of architecture. There is no ceiling over the bath and it is open to the sky. It is also connected to an aqueduct for fresh water supply. (So, the havelis might have had something like this one for their men, and another one in the zenana for the noble-women)

This is the NON-JACUZZI styled Hamam Khana in Fatehpur Sikri... a more common occurrence in the big houses of that era... so, this is what we might expect in the havelis then 😉

I'm guessing the platforms on sides are for sitting.. the one in the centre for massage (from the paintings etc I've seen depicting this) see you even have shelves in wall for soap shampoo and all 😆

When in its full glory, it must look like picture below (this is also from fatehpur sikri but a more well-preserved part of it)

(Beautiful na )

Jacuzzi nahin tho kyaa huaa... we've got a sauna steam room for our hero heroine!😆

Dear Lashy!

Thank you for your research! To me it was very interesting. I often try to imagine how they lived once in fact. Very interesting architecture, it reminded me of sulfur baths in Tbilisi.

They are also called the baths of Tsar Rostom. The oldest - Iraklievskaya bath, for the possession of which in the XVI century, argued members of the royal family and the Georgian princes.

In the baths, natural sulfur springs, with a temperature of 37C. Treat many problems and, of course, the famous massage.
But from the 17th century was built the city baths too. On a visit the time was not limited. These baths aren't only washed, but arranged lunches, played backgammon. In general, a pleasant time. Women were the days - Tuesday and Wednesday. Women often there was carried out shows of brides.

The most beautiful bath - "Pied" (Orbeliani bath). In it was Alexander Dumas (father).

@ Zhanna... thanks for taking interest in the research..it wasn't easy to find at all.. .because life of the Emperor has been documented very well... and to an extent, even life of a commoner has been documented...
but life of the upper classes/upper middle classes is very difficult to find...

Btw, those pictures I posted are not of public hamams - they are private bathrooms -hamamkhana (Urdu) or alankarabhumi (Sanskrit)

I loved the Sanskrit name for it

The pictures you've posted are beautiful... so unique and colourful too...
Of course it's the 'I wonder how they lived' that brings all of us here, in a history forum 😊
the medicinal baths are a completely different concept, of course... there were a few in India too from the Mughal era... though India is not where the concept originated from

Dear Lashy!
The facts, that you were able to find it, I know - it is very difficult. 👏
I tried to look for a variety of information about the real life. That's why I always read with great interest your comments after chapters.
I also really liked the name in Sanskrit. The word hamam I knew since childhood, it is ordinary. 😊 Baths in Tbilisi - this is not "the medicinal baths", this is exactly a public bath, a kind of "English club". 😃 Just instead of ordinary water, natural sulfur spring. The name Tbilisi comes from the word "tbilo" - warm. The city stands on the warmth springs. And, of course, a unique massage. It turns out that parous and nulliparous women need to massage in different ways, after given birth at women, joints diverge and necessary not to do harm.

Haai, Lashy!
Sorry, and thank you.
Your Periamma was in "Swapnalog" last night🥱..She didn't know if it was in her dream she saw the poem halved to be shared by the lead pair!..How very interesting! You have hinted that how both your leads are going to share a common ideology/problem/platform!😲 Who knows? Perhaps he also had similar experience with the Emperor's men in the past...😕
Your teaser is like the Aircrew's announcement of "safety instructions" to the passengers, before the take off!😆

'A fully awake' Periamma.

Ah! gals. I'm back. 🤗 🤗
So touched by your thoughts for me. Really feels good that you enjoy my crazy rendezvous with words. It actually comes spontaneously either by reading something wondering like Lashy's or Janhu's plots or something I've read elsewhere.

Was caught up in a web of things. Now untangled myself.

Please forgive me. I will be a regular. But I need to catch up on things on the forum.

Yes, Yes, will update my story too.

But Lashy, what can I say. Your stranger has so intrigued me. I'm lost for words.
My shabdh bandaar needs to be replenished.

Will do so soon.

Until then gals.
Love to you all.
🤗
