Chapter : 6

Sameera didn't know how much time had passed since they left Malwa. She was sitting in the palki with Lakshmi. It wasn't norm for the dasis to sit in the palki with royalty. But Sameera needed the support after everything that happened. Everything ... starting from her time travel to her getting married to the most ruthless king in India. It seemed so surreal to her. She was sixteen for god's sake. Few days back, her only worry had completing her math homework. Now she was thinking what she would do if Jalal forced himself on her. Kill herself or risk losing her virtue.

Sam sighed and kept her head on Lakshmi's shoulder. She was the only friend here and now her only support. Lakshmi was caressing her hair gently in a reassuring manner. It calmed her down a bit. Sam sighed again closing her eyes. She found herself dozing off into an uncomfortable sleep. She hadn't been able to sleep properly for the last two days.

Dream :

She was in her karate class. This was a special class only for her. In the whole school, she showed the most talent in karate which earned her private classes with Sensei Li, the resident karate instructor. It was only in these karate classes that Sam realized how much Sensei held back in regular classes so as not to harm the children. Stacey was complaining about her getting special treatment from Sensei. If she knew what actually happened in these classes, she wouldn't have complained as much. Sensei Li was a taskmaster. That blonde bimbo wouldn't have survived him.

Sam had just finished the five laps that Sensei had told her to do as a warm up exercise. She walked up to Sensei who was meditating.

"I'm done, Sensei." She said.

"No, you are far from done. You have a long way to go before that, you have to do what She requires of you. I am merely preparing you." He said opening his eyes. Sam had gotten used to his strange talks and riddles. So she just shrugged.

"Go do some stretching exercises. I'll be there shortly." He said. Sameera just nodded. She went and lied the mattress down on the floor and started doing some exercises. She had been pulling and stretching her sore muscles for ten minutes when Sensei finally came.

"Did you do the meditating exercises I told you to do? To clear amd calm your mind." He asked. Sam nodded. Those meditations were really helping her keep calm and keep her emotions in check.

"Good. It'll help you in the future. Today we'll step into a more advanced level." Sam was a bit apprehensive about what a more advanced level would entail. She had been doing this for five months. She had learned quite some advanced levels in this art. After completing the basics in the first month, they moved on to more advanced moves, kicks, punches, flips, playing strengths and weaknesses of body and all that. With that still in practise, Sam was made to fight holographic targets, only the targets at first, but later Sensei also joined the rank of opponents, which made it much more difficult. Then she had to do obstacle courses. At first, it took more than fifteen minutes. But now she could do it within twelve seconds.

And, of course, there was those exercises - slapping water kept in a bowl, moving bamboo stick with the back of hands, jumping from a height without any safety below. Sam had gotten many broken bones there. They didn't make sense at first. But Sam understood the need of these exercises when she broke a wooden plank by only a punch or when she could jump from 20 feet height and roll onto the floor with only the slightest injuries.

Sam was worried that she wasn't doing good enough. That is, until Sensei said that she had learned in four months what usually takes at least one year to learn. Sam knew she was very intelligent. But finding that that intelligence extended to practical field also gave her a giddy feeling.

Back to the present. "Now close your eyes, do those exercises and calm your mind." Sensei said. Sam did as instructed. She felt a pair of hands on her shoulder. But she was used to it. It wasn't unusual for Sensei to help her relax by massaging her muscles. It was strictly professional and yet soothing. She was never worried about this because she knew Sensei was a good man and would never exploit anyone in such way.

But right now the worrry came. Sensei's hands were roaming down her neck and arms, nearing her waist. Sensei had never gone there. Now that she was noticing, the hands seemed different. The hands were rough and callous instead of the long and smooth hands that Sam knew Sensei had. The hands reached her waist, still going lower, nearing the place where nobody else ever touched. Sameera's eyes flew open and she quickly grabbed the hand and twisted it while turning to face Sensei.

Only to find that it wasn't Sensei who had touched her, it was Jalaluddin Muhammad. She looked around. Instead of the karate class, she was in a big chamber decorated intricately, like a king or queen's chamber. She felt a hand around her waist and then she was pulled against a body. She looked to see the Mughal Emperor looking at her with lust.

The man brought up a hand to touch her face. When she leaned away, the man chuckled, "You can't run anywhere, little cat. You're mine to do as I wish. I'd wish you luck. But with me around, you won't have any left." And then he took Sam's hair in a brutal grip and leaned down to crash his lips with Sam's. Sam closed her eyes. He's just an inch away and she is paralyzed and she couldn't move and ...

End Dream

Sam woke up with a gasp. Her eyes flew open and she took Lakshmi's hand in a vice grip. It felt like her chest was contracting and she couldn't breathe. It was at that time that Sam realised that she was having a full blown panic attack. She started breathing unevenly and her whole body trembled.

She felt a hand on her shoulder and someone's voice. She tried to focus on the voice. It sounded familiar. "Sam, are you well? Look at me. Listen to my voice. Focus, Sam, I need you to focus." She felt a hand shake her shoulder. And then the same hand took her in a hug. The same voice whispered in her ear in a soothing manner. "Shh, Sam. It's okay. It's going to be okay. I'm here. I'll be with you, always, every step of the way."

Sam focused on the voice. It was Lakshmi, she recognized now. Lakshmi knew what she had to do to calm Sam down. She had panic attacks before, after her mom died. Her dad was there to help her then. With time, the attacks decreased gradually to the point that it stopped happening. But after coming here, Sam started having them again. The first one was when she found out that she really was the daughter of the Malwa King. Finding out that your parents aren't really your parents and your whole life was a lie doesn't do any good to people. She had gone to her room and sat down on the floor, breathing heavily. That's how Lakshmi found her. She had the presence of mind to sooth Sam with comforting words and rubbed soothing circles on her back. Turned out, many people in the ashram used to have panic attacks. She learned from the Hakim how to calm people down.

After that she had two more attacks, one when she found out that she had to marry the Mughal Emperor and another when said Emperor agreed to her conditions for marriage. Both the time, Lakshmi had been there for her, with her. This was her fourth panic attack. Lakshmi helped out in this one too. Sam could feel her breathing slowing down as her mind focused. The overwhelming panic faded leaving just a bitter feeling and a heaving chest. She leaned against Lakshmi with her head on Lakshmi's arm. Again, Sam was grateful that she had Lakshmi as a friend. She had no idea what she would do without her.

"Probably die from the amount of the anxiety fits you have." Lakshmi said in a mocking tone. Sam looked at Lakshmi. So she had said that aloud. She looked at Lakshmi fondly and chuckled weakly, "Probably." Sam sighed and closed her eyes. God, she had no idea what to do, especially now that she was married to a ruthless man who probably was going to force her today. But for now, she decided not to worry about that now. Now she could just lie there in the comfort of her friend's arms just a bit longer. And she did, for quite a while. But 'quite a while' wasn't long enough. Soon they came to a stop. Sam opened her eyes and looked outside the palki to see a clear field. She supposed they were going to make camp here. Ancient people lacked so much in transport. They could take days to reach the place that could be journeyed to in a few hours in a car.

A soldier neared the palki and bowed respectfully, "Begum Sahiba, we will camp here tonight." Sam nodded and the palki was set down. she gingerly stepped out of the palki and stood up. Lakshmi quickly followed. Sam stretched and worked the cramps in her neck and waist. She looked at the soldier and said, "I suppose you people are setting up tents."

The soldier nodded his head "Yes, Begum Sahiba. Your and Shahenshah's tent is being set up." THAT had Sam snapping her head up so quickly she nearly got another cramp. "What do you mean, my and Shahenshah's tent?"

The soldier looked up confusedly. "You and Shahenshah are husband and wife. It is your wedding night. So ..." He would have continued to speak if Sam hadn't cut him off. "Yes, I know that. But I don't want to stay in the same room with that mons ... man. Make another tent for me." Sam almost said 'monster'. But she knew she could not speak of him in that manner here.

She was already going to have to worry about forced sex from that man. There was no way she was going to sit in that man's tent quietly while waiting for him to rape her. Nope. Not gonna happen.

But the soldier was shaking his head. "But Wazir-E-Alia told us to ..." It seemed that the soldier needed more convincing.

"Who is the Queen here?" The soldier gestured towards her, "You, Begum Sahiba." Sam nodded her head with a smirk. She might not like being the Mughal Emperor's wife, but along with it came the title of Queen. Sam had no qualms about using that title to her advantage if necessary. And this was necessary.

"Yes, me. So do as I say. Set up a different tent for me." She said with as much authority as she could muster.

The soldier was still unconvinced, "But..." Sam didn't even need to hear that. "No buts. Do it." She said in the same tone. The soldier snapped his mouth shut and nodded his head. As he left to do as told, Sam looked to the side to see Lakshmi looking at her in awe.

"What?" Sam asked.

"Sam, you never cease to amaze me." Lakshmi replied.

Sam smirked. "I know. I am amazing." Lakshmi hit her hand lightly. Sam rubbed her hand while pretending to be hurt. They both glared at each other for a while before breaking into laughter. They both laughed like maniacs while clutching their sides. After they calmed down, they made idle conversation to pass time until the soldier came to inform them that her tent was ready. Sam had to go there alone. Apparently, Lakshmi would have to go to the servants' side of the tent. They bade goodbye to each other and Lakshmi handed Sam her satchel before parting.

Sam declined the offer of help from the servants and went to her tent. She quickly rid herself of her jeweleries except her 'mangalsutra' and a set of bangles. She contemplated getting her iPod and earphones out from her satchel, two of the few things that came to the past with her, to listen to songs. It wasn't unusual to do so for her. Many times, she fell asleep with the earphones still in her ears while the songs kept playing. But ultimately she decided against it. She was in no mood to listen to songs today.

She went to bed and lied down with blankets up to her waist. She sighed and rolled over to the side closing her eyes. Hopefully, she would be able to sleep peacefully tonight. Unknown to Sam, her hopes were dashed as Resham Khan went to tell her Mistress what the new Queen did.

Jalal POV

Jalal dismissed all the courtiers that came with him after making a few travel and security plans. Now he was getting ready to go to his tent, where no doubt his new wife was waiting for him He intended to ravish her thoroughly. His fantasies were stooped by Maham Anga barging into the the tent of holding court.

"Pardon me if I interrupted anything, Shahenshah. But you have to do something about this."

Jalal was bewildered. "Badi Ammi, what are you talking about? I have to do something about what?" Maham Anga sneered, "Your newest wife." Jalal frowned, "What do you mean?"

"Apparently, like Jodha, your new wife is not eager to be with you." And the Maham Anga told him everything - Resham had heard Begum Meera ordering a soldier to set a different tent for her, saying that she did not want to stay with 'that man'. Jalal's good mood quickly evaporated. 'That man, huh? i will show her what 'that man' is capable of.' Jalal thought as he stormed out the camp with a foreboding fury. But he missed Maham Anga's face who was smirking viciously thinking about all the torture that would be inflicted upon the Hindu Begum.

Jalal walked furiously towards the tent of the new 'Queen'. It wasn't hard to find out the tent. It was, after all, one of the extra tents, clearly not supposed to be there. All the people, the slaves and the courtiers, stayed at a distance from him. Partly because he was the Shahenshah and mostly because of the wrathful expression he wore.

Soon, he was entering the tent. His eyes went straight to the bed. The sight he saw there had his anger diminishing. The Princess of Malwa was lying on her back with the blankets up to her waist. One hand lay across her stomach while the other was beside her head which was rolled to one side. The moonlight was falling on her face through the tent window making her look ethereal. Her chest heaved up and down as she breathed evenly. Jalal wondered what she would feel like while he had her body flushed against himself and his hands roamed all over her.

His fantasies were again broken, this time by a voice. "Is standing like a statue while staring at others unabashedly a habit of yours?" Jalal looked up to see the Princess had opened her eyes and now looking at him with a mix of anger and fear. So the little wild cat was afraid. Good.

He chuckled, amused, "Maybe." he said nonchalantly.

The girl narrowed her eyes at him. "Well, it's rude. You should stop that."

Jalal looked at her in confusion. "Stop what?"

The girl smirked despite her fear. "Being rude. It's why you got slapped in the first place."

In a moment, Jalal's fury came back with a vengeance. His face twisted in anger as he strode towards the bed. Seeing the man of her nightmare walk towards her, the girl quickly got up. When Jalal got near enough, he got on the bed on his knees and continued to go towards her. The princess quickly backed up against the headboard until she couldn't go anymore. Jalal put his hands on either side of her head and leaned towards her until their faces were inches away.

"You mean why you slapped me, right?" His voice was soft yet it had many layers of menace in it. Jalaluddin didn't take insult nicely.

"Well, you were the one who grabbed me from behind. What did you think I'd give you for trying to touch me that way? A kiss?" She was defiant even when afraid.

Jalal chuckled again. "Oh you have spirit. No matter. I will break it soon enough."

The princess glared daggers at him. "I am not afraid of you or anyone else." But Jalal could hear the slight tremor in her voice.

He smirked. "Oh you don't have to be afraid of anyone else. I'll be there to protect you from outside people." Then he moved his hand and grabbed the back of her neck. He leaned his mouth against her ear and whispered, "But you will be afraid of me. Because no one will be able to save you from me." To emphasize his point, he grabbed her waist with his other hand and caressed a soft spot there.

The girl's breath hitched. "You cannot do that." She whispered

"Yes, I can. I am your husband. I can do what I want." He whispered again. "And no one will do anything. Like I said, no one will be able to save you from me, Princess Meera."

The girl trembled and closed her eyes. All her previous bravado was gone. The man felt a smug satisfaction in bringing this girl down to this state. "What? No smart quip about me not being allowed call you Meera, my beloved Begum?" But the only response he got was closed eyes.

Jalal sighed. He wanted to enjoy her, but not when she was too frightened to respond. She wanted her to fight him. It was far more fun to hunt when the prey was struggling.

"But not tonight." He retracted his hands from around her. The princess looked at him in confusion. Jalal smirked at her again. "Get some sleep, princess. You will not have enough of it in the coming days, it seems."

And then he abruptly got up from bed and left the tent leaving behind the confused princess. On the whole way to his own tent, he was smirking. This is going to be fun.
