Chapter 3

That night Jo lay awake in bed wondering if she had made the right choice by keeping Salim away from his heritage...family ...her family and Jalal's family...her mother, father, brothers, sister ...she avoided all of them...she misses them terribly...she breaks down and begins to cry...many times she had thought of going back home...iif her family saw Salim they would immediately recognize him to be Jalal's son...her mother would have let HB know...and Jalal would know...Jo begins to wonder about Jalal ...recalls her conversation with Bakshi, she had asked Baks about him ...who quickly blew her off by saying "oh, you know him, he is his usual self...he and ruks fight all the time...he lives his own life, she does hers, they come for family gatherings once in a while ...Jalal gets drunk every time they come together...she works for Jalal's company...she travels around the world in his private jet ...buying paintings and art work for his offices around the world...she hates India ...she stays with her parents in London most of the time...Jalal also travels around the world and has no time for her, has his own string of girlfriends that he changes almost twice every week...they fight like cat and dog" Baks pauses, takes a deep breath, sighs and continues "bhaijaan became a changed man the day he married her" Jo listens quietly...does not say a word...they sit in silence then with curiosity Jo asks, how many children do they have?" "Non" she snaps back quickly ...they don't have any children...she tricked him into marrying her... Bhaijaan won't forgive her for it..."

Jo shudders recalling her fateful evening in Jalal's arms, he had treated her like she was his one night stand, left and never saw him again. She tries to plan out different strategies in her head ...what would happen if she went away, disappear without a trace from New Jersey...decides against it...Jalal had all the money in the world and if his family wanted they would find her no matter what and find the best lawyer ...prove her unfit as a mother and take full custody of Salim, she did not want to take the risk...that won't work she decides and jumps to the next train of thoughts ...what if Jalal refuses to accept Salim as his son...Jo shivers at the thought...that might work, but will hurt Salim ...she decides against it and moves to the next ...what if Jalal wants to keep Jo as his mistress...she decides she will never agree and will never stoop that low...then thinks what if he wants to marry me...she closes her eyes and thinks about it a little longer...that idea worked in her brain...a compact happy family...but will not work as Jalal is already married ...he might be going through problems but is still a married man...is she willing to accept him after the way he treated her...Jo fall asleep as many scenes go through her thoughts...

The next morning Jo gets Salim ready and they both get packed up and leave for Bak's house...Jo turns on the GPS, after spending about an hour in bumper to bumper traffic, they reach their destination. Picking Salim up Jo drags her feet climbing up the steps to Bak's mansion, an excited Baks opens the door and carries Salim...Sony beta good morning...did you eat?" she questions him...Jo was watching them bond...her eyes fill with tears..."Jodha beti" she hears a soft voice, a voice call her name, she turns around and looks into one of her favorite pair of eyes ..ammijaan's. They walk towards each other and embrace...HB's embrace was comforting to Jo...she had missed the motherly touch, warmth...it reminded her of her mom...tears begin to cloud her eyes ... "ammijaan, I missed you...I am so happy today," she says in between tears...HB embraces her tighter, lightly pats Jo's head against her shoulder, "I'm sorry we were not there for you when you need us the most, I'm sorry my son caused a lot of pain in your life" she whispers ...Jo sighs "its okay...it was my choice, I don't regret it, at that time it all seemed good, but now I see and regret all the hurt it will be causing...I did what I had to do" HB pulls away, hold Jo's hand and leads her to the sofa... "you disappeared from our lives and 3 years later show up with a grandchild we never knew existed ...where is my potaa?" ...looking around "I have been dreaming about him all night long, this was the longest night of my life" she sighs getting up...Jo gets up and calls "Sony beta..." She sees him giggling and running with a banana in his hand...Bakshi laughing loudly, chasing him..."he is a bundle of energy" Jo whispers as she grabs him to a halt, She sees awe in HB eyes as they shine with tears , ..."mommy...let go...I'm play catch" Jo picks him up bringing him to a halt... "beta I want you to meet someone very special...you dadima..." Sony looks up, jumps off her laps and claps "my daddy, my daddy, mommy sony happy ...thank you mommy" he turns around and hugs Jo...Jo, HB and Bakshi ...all shocked to the core...Salim littles eyes scans the room, Jo sees tiny disappointed eyes ... "no beta, this your dadima ...your daddy's mom" hugging him tightly...Salim slowly lifts his head and looks at HB...a little shy, initially refuses to get out of Jo's arms but slowly warms up to HB... "Salim beta...look what I have for you, a present, do you want to open this present?" HB asks...the little boy eagerly nods and jumps off Jo's lap and into HB's arms..."Dadima" he says softly...looking at her through the corner of his eyes..."wow, you are the most handsome boy I have ever seen" HB tells him hugging him...she picks him up and cradles him in her arms, kissing his head... "I am so happy to meet you..."

Jo and Salim became frequent visitors at Bakshi's residence over the next three days. Baks and HB showered him with toys and gave him so much attention that Salim refused to go home with Jo at the end of the day... Bakshi's husband was away on a business trip and not expected back for another week...Jalal was expected to be in New Jersey on Saturday ..."two more days Jo, you will have to meet and face reality" Bakshi reminds Jo...watching little Salim bonding with Baks and HB...Jo regretted keeping him away from them...she wondered how her parents would react...HB was not happy with the relation Jo had with Shafik...and made it clear to Jo "it is not nice you have another man playing the father role in Salim's life, are you in a serious relationship with with?" she questions her ...Salim frequently mentions Aunty Ali and Uncle isfi in his conversations ...mentions more of uncle isfi than ali...HB got annoyed every time Salim mentioned their names "if he has a girlfriend why is hanging around you always, you did not even give my son the opportunity to know about his child" Jo's was beginning to get a little annoyed and says "well, is your son just hanging around his wife...he does not have other women in his life?" she questions back. There was a tension building between them, they had many discussions regarding what is right and what is wrong...then finally HB says firmly "Jodha ...I'm going to call Jalal and let him know" ...Jo somehow felt this was coming...but was not prepared for it, she sucks in a deep breath ...Jo does not feel good ...she begins panicking ...feels her heart race, she could not breathe, begins sweating profusely...tears roll down her cheeks...Jo feels she is not ready for this anymore...she did not want to face Jalal...her choice was being taken away from her, and she becomes terrified, her mind begins flipping...HB embraces Jo in a light hug... "Jodha, beta, I know your intentions were good...but Salim is my blood, he is our family...he is my pota, my only grandchild...you kept him away from us for almost two years of his life...you misjudged the value of family in your life...don't teach that to your son, ...I will not allow it...I am not sure what went on between Jalal and you...Baks told me he forced himself on you...I don't want to judge you or him, I only know that I have a grandchild that needs my love, his father's love, he has to know his family, you need to reach out to your parents too, I know Jalal can be a difficult person to deal with, we'll be there to support you" Jo sits with her between her knees covering her face, listening quietly with tears flowing down her cheeks...HB's voice slowly bringing Jo to face the reality of the situation...Baks walks in, stood silently listening to the conversation...then steps in "ammijaan, please don't upset Jo, she is already under a lot of stress...let her tell bhaijaan...we owe it to her after the way he treated her...promise me Ammi...please ..." HB rolls her eyes and grudgingly argrees..."Jalal will be here on Saturday and by the end of the day if you don't tell me I will..." Jo smiles and agrees saying " thank you ammijaan...I will come her Saturday evening before dinner and will talk to him..." The day ended peacefully...everyone was happy including Salim who did not want to part from his dadima..."goodnight beta, see you tomorrow, tell you ammi to bring you here early...I will be waiting for you"...HB gives him a hug and kisses tucking him into his car seat, then looks at Jo and says "don't forget to brink shafik and Aliyah for breakfast too" Jo nods...the car barely made it past the driveway, Salim was fast asleep...

Salim was up early, he jumps into the bed with Jo "mommy get up, lets go" shaking her ...Jo wakes up it was almost 0700am...they had planned to meet for breakfast at Baks's house...they shower and quickly get dressed ...as they were walking to the care..Shafik met them ..Jo looks around and asks "where is Ali...?" Shafik shakes his head lightly and says ..."she had a bad headache and wanted to sleep in...friiday is the only day she gets to sleep in" Jo smiles ...Ali was taking a heavy load of classes for the summer session...they jump into Jo's car and head towards Baks mansion...they pull into the driveway ...

Meanwhile at Bak's house...ammijaan comes down to the kitchen to turn the coffee maker on ...and gets pleasantly surprised to see Jalal sitting and reading the financial times "you scared me Jalal" she says, he slowly gets up, walks towards her "good morning ammi, you don't look happy to see me" he says hugging her , kisses her forehead... "you were not yourself when I talked to you last night...you sounded very different...like something was bothering you...so I cancelled meeting and here I am" grinning...HB was surprised ...she did not know what to do...she looks at the clock ...0830 ...Jo will be coming soon...the tension felt by HB was beyond explainable...Baks walks in and gets a surprise of her life when she saw Jalal sitting in the kitchen talking to ammijaan...she walks in and was surprised as well..."GM Bhaijaan...we were not expecting you today...to what do we owe the pleasure of your company a day early" she asks as she tries to get her phone which was lying next to Jalal...Jalal notices an edge to her voice like she did not want him there..."well I thought I will surprise you both...sharif is away and I thought I should entertain the two most important women in my life...is that ok with you?" he asks a little annoyed ..."why are you both exchanging looks ...looks like you are not happy to see me?" he asks ..."Nothing like that beta" HB quickly cuts in...handing Jalal a cup with hot coffee...Jalal takes it and walks up to the large window..."It's a such a beautiful day...and the view from the kitchen is gorgeous...the trees, the mountains...I never get to enjoy nature" ...he whispers completely awed by the scenery when his eyes catch a glimpse of a car pulling into the driveway...he see a girl get out of the car...he recognizes her immediately, his Jo...he checks her out , in almost 3 years she has not changed a much ...she seems a little fuller in her chest and butt...gotten more curvy...his desires fires up again... He recalls her lying in his bed looking innocent, a little scared, unbelievingly beautiful and desirable ...he remembers the overwhelming lust and urge to take her, the way she responded when he made her his...something was undeniably attracting him to her...he gets excited was about to call Baks when he sees a guy get out of the car and help her...why is she with a guy ...Jalal begins to feels a pang of jealousy and rage was slowly creeping in his mind, when he sees Jo helping a little boy out of the car ...now Jalal was furious...she is married and moved on...she has moved on...he throws the coffee cup against the wall...
