Mandy, your post is heartwarming. Akbar, indeed was a rare human being.

Donjas, my boy where were you..missed you blunt comments😉..thank you for agreeing with me dear!

Even today, many extremists regard Akbar as either a brutal Muslim ruler or as an unbeliever, depending on which religion they belong to. They view Akbar through their own narrow prism, not realizing that for Akbar, religion itself was a means to an end. He said it in that famous letter to King Philip of Spain "We profit from the discourses of holy men of all faiths."

very well said and i agree word for word!..poor fellow did so much but except a few admirers he gained criticism instead,,na idher ke na udhar ke😕!

The tendency to view Akbar from the narrow prism of religion is very difficult to avoid, even for secular individuals. At India's independence, when the constituent assembly was proposing various emblems and symbols for the new India, a lot of motifs related to Ashoka were selected, but not one of Akbar. Lord Mountbatten criticized them for that.

..and i very well no why, but cannot discuss openly!

On 5th October, the RSS is organizing a historical seminar on "Hemu, the forgotten Hindu Hero". The Union minister of culture is going to take part in addition to many other luminaries. Do not be surprised, if at this occasion a lot of vitriol is thrown at Akbar.

true that but what can a common man do, other than keeping anger in heart and dealing with it helplessly!

ela, very well said! we as educated people value and appreciate what these people did for their country which no ordinary person could have done!

Lovely lines, Mandy my dear, mirroring your despair at what Akbar the Great is being reduced to onscreen. I doubt if anything dramatic by way of improvements in the script can be expected, but do not fret. Akbar's reputation is proof against such depredations, and he will remain what he was all these centuries, a greatly admired and respected historical icon.

Mandy dearest,

When you say of Lord Mountbatten, "he might not be a good soul but i guess at this point his view was most unbiased", I do not think you can really mean it. Every single British ruler in India spent half his time trying to set the Hindus against the Muslims, the Sikhs against the Hindus, North Indians against South Indians, and so on. Surely you know that. How then do you think that the last British Viceroy - who was the single biggest reason for the carnage of partition as he advised London to suddenly advance the date from June 1948 to August 15, 1947, thus setting off panic exoduses and mass killings - would be "most unbiased" on such an issue? I would not trust any British ruler under the Raj as far as I could throw a table!

As for why the Asoka symbol was chosen, do see my longish response to Ela on page 2, which also has a part addressed to you. It had NOTHING to do with any discrimination against Akbar. Surely you do not mean to say that Asoka did not deserve to have that symbol adopted as our national emblem? He was great and Akbar was great, and one should not compare one with the other and speak as if to choose Asoka was to automatically denigrate Akbar. It was no such thing. And the members of the Constituent Assembly were all learned and wise men, not like today's MPs, and they would hardly have been taken in by the kind of selective recommendations you were talking about! If they chose the Asoka symbol, it was for a perfectly valid reason which had nothing to do with Akbar, and let us not see conspiracies where none exist!

Well, let me stop before I get into trouble for something or the other!

Hey Mandy,
Great write-up.

I think Akbar, was one of the least appreciated heroes of History.

Most of the Historic texts are ambiguous on him. Many also call him as a war-monger, while it's true about pretty much every Royalty.

Though the Hindus of his time called his reign as Ram Rajya, few of his policies are only known to academics.

And our show isn't helping either, but, in a way, it has helped many of us, go back and check History and Literature to learn all that we can of the Great King and a wonderful Human Being. 😳👏
