Beautifully done and intensely moving. The loneliness and heartache that corrode Salim's waking hours come out with such pitiless clarity. Not all his mother's love can protect him against these slights and sufferings.

What I liked best of all is that even in his bitter grief and resentment, Salim does not lose control over his emotions,and holds firmly on to his pride and self-respect. His mother has indeed brought him up to be internally as well as externally strong and very resilient emotionally, for all that it must hurt very badly inside him. Poor little boy, but an admirably brave little boy as well.
