Yes orphans and fatherless kids are usually mature beyond age. They are forced to grow up because they face lot of discrimination from society and in order to survive they compromise. Also they are braver than normal kids who have mom-dad and family to fight for their rights to protect them. My school was next to an orphanage and a few kids from there were in school.

Salim has only one friend Khannum and for him her happiness matters. If he had many friends he may not have bothered may be broken friendship in anger that is what all do. But here one she is smaller than him second the only one friend he has so he wants her to remember him always in happy way. So he is just acting that he is not feeling hurt to make her happy.
