Much as we try and dissect it, Akbar's character here is still part of the Indian television industry and this industry primarily caters to a female audience. Unlike us, who are here to gain some interesting perspectives on history (with entertaining spins on the tale itself) - others like twists and drama - plotting against leads that the heroine unfolds and untangles!

The top 5 serials have prominent female leads taking charge of the serial - the men have little role in them, especially after the leads' SR is done and dusted with 😆
The men are hardly required after that as their role as romance-makers is done. It's then time for these male leads to hand over the reigns to the females so the usual SB saga can go on and on!

Sandhya/Bhabho are ALWAYS in the limelight - Suraj is still someone who's become backdrop material (the first year wasn't so)
Gopi bahu/Kokila are ALWAYS in the limelight - Ahem is someone in the backdrop
Akshara possibly enjoys twice the screen space and dialogues as Naithik (though Naithik-Akshara's romance is still on every now and again). Yet, all we see Naithik do is step out of the house with a briefcase in the morning and return in the evening for chai-pakoda😆
The list goes on and on...

JA has also joined this list, that's all! While Jalal's role might not become as bad as Ahem's, it definitely is no greater than a Naithik's at this stage...

Other historicals like MP and Buddha where this is not the case don't enjoy such TRPs. 😊

Ektha has famously (or infamously) said - Ladies are eye-candy in the movie industry and men are eye-candy in the TV industry!

Adi...One day, EK thought that the best way to prove feminism would be to butcher the greatest Shehehenshah -e - hind ever...
Hence she made JA, began with a bang, because she wanted to kill a male character who was every woman's secret desire.. ...,hence when JA was at its peak, she went in for the kill, by reciting:

"Itni Shiddat se maine tujhe MITAANE ki koshish ki hai; ki har zarre ne TUJHE MAARNE ki saajish ki hain".

😆

@bold: I cannot stop laughing reading this..:):)

I think right now may be they are focusing more on KB than JA. the TRPs of KB is increasing.
Also CV's do not know how to be balanced. Either we start feeling sorry for Jalal or Jodha. both characters have been butchered.

Wish they could visit this forum often as we have some wonderful writers. Another possibility is keeping the audience glued. If they purely stick on to History then we may not have enough viewers. who knows why, only EKta and her cvs will know...

@lashy - dont you think its time for change - Audience has lapped up the show Zindagi Gulzar hai on Zee's Zindagi channel - and if you have seen it, Zaroon's character has been as beautifully etched out as Kasaf's has been - and so have all the supporting characters - and the Audience has loved the interplay of both leads - one lead has not been butchered to make way for the other - and this is the trp audience that I am talking of - infact the ultimate test at the grind is the story and not the characters - and this change has come to the Indian telly audience too.

Loved watching ZGH, but you can't compare Indian shows with shows from across the border. For starters Pak shows that I have seen on Zindagi don't last that long, ZGH was what 26 episodes, even in JA CVS in the first 6 odd months did complete justice to characters. From what I have seen Pak shows are still in nascent stage, with a high entertainment value but low commercial life. Indian shows used to be like, that remember shows like Saans, it had spectacular portrayal of all the leads.

Problem with Indian telly is that there are too many shows on too many channels within the same 7:30 to 11 time slot, to make matters worst the audience is largely the same, Indian homes are still mostly 1 or 2 TV sets per house. Primary one is a shared commodity for shows which have to have a safe storyline with a generic appeal. Not to mention that revenues for these shows are largely commercial driven, and since Indian households essentially run by women sponsors are more likely to invest in shows that are women oriented.

If you look at it from CVs perspective. JA has to compete with Saathiya (woman oriented), DABH (woman oriented), Mahabharata (family oriented). JA will find it very difficult commercially to be able to address the needs of a niche discerning audience as historical conformity does not churn numbers, shows like MP and Bhuddha are testament to that.

The only hope for JA is to have a good romantic tracks with dashes of historical / political angles and opulence and grandiosity that sets it apart. And yes, CVs have proven in the past that such tracks do exist, and that they don't require injustice being done to any of the leads.

I agree female control remote channels in houses
But that is usually till 8pm

Once men come back from work and kids from tution the mothers do not have choice to watch what they want atleast in cities. In villages i doubt people watch TV after 8pm as they sleep early

So what exactly do men and kids like may be cartoon, news and historical serials

So i disagree that females are audience at peak 8pm they are target for afteroon 1-8pm slot usually

Other times husbands, kids dominate usually

I have seen all around men and kids wanting to watch historicals like Shivaji, Mahanharat, Akbar the great, comedy nights etc and even talking about them but they have great expectations

Men and kids get bored if repeatedly the same story repeated and they switch over to computers and other mode of entertainments like news, sports, cartoons as nowadays house has more than one TV usually

But if the show has great content they definetly watch especially historical for ex an Mahabharat, an Shivaji etc

And see there is a problem with charcaters like Akbar who were moderates. Everyone loves to hate them. Liberals hate them saying they were bad before becoming great and orthodox consider that they are bad because they became great and left the orthodox path. This is issue not only with Akbar but Ashoka etc. If somone always is orthodox like Aurangzeb they get great support from all orthodox. So now matter what crap anyone shows in name of Akbar majority do not oppose or do not care.

Regading why ekta shows him badly and poorly

1) TRP
2) Female oriented
3) Ekta has no love of history usually people who make historical have pride in their history and culture or that person Ekta has no such considerations

Jokes apart, imho, the primary reason for TV serials in India starting with a bang n then going astray, is
"NO BOUND SCRIPT"

The trps clearly dictate the length of roles of characters, of tracks, of sub plots, of plots, etc...We saw a classic example most recently how TM was humiliated bec the channel wanted to fit in "Naari Shakti"...

Other reasons, for JA going wrong, according to me are:

1) mainly women watch daily teleshows, n have huge appetites for saas bahu melodramas
2) Most women audiences adore the ultra feminist, always right, always bhaashaning heroine...
3)Paridhi's discomfort for romantic scenes, which was initially the USP of the show...romance is an eyesore of late in JA...of course, even the cvs r to be blamed along with PS for this for writing rank bad scenes...
4)An emerging universal trend, which I find very disturbing...villains n negativity are being increasingly accepted by all...be it shows n films or be it video games for kids, where they root for the villain to win...a reputed actor like Salman glorified corruption in Dabangg. ...Saif lootofies insurance companies in Race 1 & 2 n both films r super hits...many more examples...see the villains thriving in JA...they command promos, as against Akbar when he was given the title...think about it...

My Q is - why are we not ready to break the norms - why are we skeptical that anything which goes against the popular norms wont work??? Why do we think that a woman oriented show has to have a weak male lead???? Why do we even think that only women oriented shows will work??? Why are we as an audience saying that other viewers are not ready for a change???? Do we have any data that proves this so - and pls trps are no data so lets not quote them - has anyone done any countrywide data collection and analysis on this???? Dont many of us on forum talk of our frnds and relatives and neighbors who have found shows that break the norms as interesting???? Why can we not have a show that has a woman as the inspiration yet treats both protagonists with justice and equality????

If a story is told well and passionately, it does make an impact on the viewers - a bigger one than blindly following the norms can ever do - the problem is that everyone wants to take the easy way out - no one is passionate about what they do anymore - This reminds me of the song 'Eye of the Tiger' from Rocky - the lyrics are so apt -

So many times it happens too fast
You trade your passion for glory
Don't lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

Adi,
Recently when Ram kapoor left BALH ,he gave a press release that he wasn't happy with the characterization was taking place and whoever were watching that serial will come to know what was happening.I think some of the actors now should start voicing their opinions then only the PH houses get an idea.

@bold: very true, the forthcoming Jodha kidnap is proof of this. The same audience who want to watch Naari Shakti will also lap up Jo being thrown around. And I feel sorry to say, to a large extent I enjoy negativity on TV - Maham exposure, much anticipated Ruk bhandaphod these were more anxiously awaited than Akbar being titled, or teerth Kar being abolished stories - correspondingly these 2 got way less promotion than the former tracks.
