Adi, Jalal (in the serial and the one Emperor himself) was an astute person, no doubt...because whatever said and done...astuteness is not something that can be taught ..the skill can be sharpened by experience..but one has to come with it naturally either way!
If you notice - all the errors of judgements he's made or will make -will be due to an emotional blindfold he has that he uses as and when the issue is to do with a loved one. I am certain, he isn't totally unaware that MA is the epitome of purity just because of the white bedsheet she drapes herself in. I am sure he is quite aware of Ruqaiyya's shortcomings. Yet, he puts up with them because HE CHOOSES TO. Similarly, he is not blind to Salima's genial nature or Jodha's inherent goodness and hence the partiality to the latter even during the times she was unkind to him.
The MC Kaand was a grieving father at his lowest!
The paralysis he went into during Tasneem was because of the sight of watching that 12 year old being wedded to a 60 year old - his self-flagellation was because he realized how Jodha must have felt entering this marriage unwillingly.
His paralysis during the Benazir track was due to the fact he simply couldn't come to terms with the fact that one woman he's fallen for doesn't love him and might never love him back.
It is these emotionally-driven moods and thus the decisions thereafter that are possibly his weakness. His sentiments and emotions are possibly the one 'beta' trait in this otherwise alpha Emperor and this is how I think it was with THE MAN too! That only makes him more 'human' if nothing else!
As for Todarmal -
Similarly, he could recognize the latent goodness in Todarmal from the very instant the horse-rider offered two strangers (who looked like they had nothing to pay) his house as shelter so they could remain safe from the dakus. The fact that Todarmal didn't permit Jalal the athithi to fight sealed his trust on the man! I am certain that very second would have done it for him.
At this point even if he came to know Todarmal Jee was the one responsible for Humayun's death - however angry - Jalal wouldn't have taken his life! He is a grateful and forgiving chap!
The soft spoken nature, the manner in which Todarmal fought the dakus and then presented the mohar while keeping the secret is all additional proof of his integrity, that's all!
Jalal-Todarmal make for the best chemistry as King-advisor - I deeply wish they dont' reduce this fellow to another Maan Singh! Such a waste of talent and possibility, if not!
