These few lines below of yours are so insightful. I have been going over this many times to see why Jalal is so keen on bringing it again and again. He trusts her completely, understands that she is a good person, yet its beyond him to solve the dhakka puzzle. I doubt he thinks about her as leading him on now, yet he is anxious to understand the dhakaa. Jodha seems to be in no hurry to clarify till now..

And it is, to my mind pointless to debate about what hurts him more, the apparent leading on and then humiliating him, or the fact that she rejected him as a lover. It is like the proverbial chicken or egg question. It is obviously a deep hurt, a nasoor that needs to be lanced and cauterised by the truth.

For if not, Jalal will always feel, in some corner of his heart, that there is in a Jodha a wilful, capricious and cruelly insensitive woman who might resurface some time , and he will never again be able to trust her fully, without needing any proof, as he did during the false pregnancy track. And that would poison their relationship.

I think the fact that he cannot read will come out on this trip, and then the penny will drop for Jodha.

Yes, Meghana, that is it. He has now reached the stage of thinking that she is capricious, the way most men think all women are at times. Which is not good for them, whence the need to clear this up at the earliest. I thought otherwise till recently, but I have now changed my mind.

After all, did not Shakespeare say that consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds?

That you found this passage insightful does not surprise me; you are such an instinctively thoughtful person, with a remarkable ability to get under the skin of a character you are analysing.
