Prologue

"Run Jodha. This is my order." Mainavati said as she rushed into Jodha's room and locked the door.

"But maasa I can't run. What would that jalad do with bhaisa and everyone else. I can't take that risk. And anyways, what difference would it make now we are already married." Akbar and Jodha had been married in the Islamic tradition within a day of his arrival. Jodha did not even have time to contemplate anything'to find a way out of this. She had told her father that she did not want to marry Akbar but she and everyone else knew they had no other option. So she had reluctantly agreed to marry the man she abhorred.

"Not yet. Not in the hindu tradition. And we don't accept Mughal marriages. You are not married yet Jodha. And don't worry about your bhaisa. I will send them away too if need be. But I can't see you being married off to a man you hate. I know you would never be happy at a Mughal's house being the wife of the man you hate. I don't care what you want Jodha. As your mother I am ordering you to leave right now. I have packed some necessities, and motibai will go with you as well." A glimmer of hope rose within Jodha's breast, but she could not let it rise. She knew if she hoped and it all came to nothing that she would lose her will to live.

"But where would I go. He would find me maasa."

"He may own Amer, but he does not own this whole world. You will go to Aacharya's ashram. My mother had to stay at the ashram for a while and Aacharya ji knows our family. He won't deny you. Everyone who comes to the ashram is given aid. Tell them I sent you. You can hide in a dasi's disguise there. That ashram is far away from here and you should be safe there. I will send a few trusted men with you to guard you on your journey there."

Jodha's heart bloomed with hope now'there was no stopping it. She could get out of this was her only thought. But still fear remained underneath it all. Fear that he would find her, fear of what he would do to her family.

"The repercussions can be catastrophic maasa. What will you say to that Jalad when he asks you where I am?"

"I will lie. I will tell him I left you here to change but when I got back you weren't there. I will lie to your father and everyone else if needed because I love you Jodha."

Tears freely flowed down both their cheeks as mother and daughter embraced each other for what could be the last time.

Part 1

Jodha bounced on the horse as she put distance between her and her doom. Maasa would stall them as much as she could giving Jodha time to escape. For the hundredth time, Jodha rethought her decision to run away. She couldn't help but feel like a coward afterall cowards ran away from their problems. And Rajputs were not cowards, but she was bound by her promise to maasa. She also did not want to just silently accept her nightmarish fate. She was afraid of what that Jalad would do to her brothers. But her mother had promised she would handle everything. If worse come worse she would make them escape as well. She thought about her father and how his head would be hung down because she had fleed. He would be disgraced. That thought itself was enough for her to march back to Amer and face the consequences but then she remembered that letter.

--------

Jis insan ka sar chahti thi tum, ab ushi ki save karni padegi tumhe. Hum aapke ghuror, aapke ghamand ko tod dege.

I own you now, Jodha. You are my possession, my property. And I will never let you forget that.

--------

That letter had angered her beyond all bounds. In a fit of rage she had broken half the things around her. Desperation and helplessness fueling her frustration. But she was not helpless anymore. She kept on riding because that letter would not let her turn back.

A day later she arrived at the ashram and was given shelter. She adorned herself with the clothes given to her by the Bhavti ji, Aacharya ji's wife. It was perfect because no one would suspect her to be a princess in this simple white cloth without any jewelry.

A week passed and Jodha received a sandesh (letter) from her mother's family. She did not know how they knew she was here, but was happy to hear from family. The letter had let her know that everyone was still fine at her house. Jodha breathed a sigh of relief. She had been expecting the worst. She had thought that Jalad would kill her entire family.

A couple hours later, Jodha sat near the window. It had been raining all day and the gloomy weather was taking its toll on Jodha.

"Jodha what are you staring at?" she heard Motibai.

"At the rain. I am trying to pacify myself but can't seem to. This weather is making me restless Motibai. I feel as if something is going to happen."

"But you should be happy Jodha. Everyone is fine at Amer, and we are fine here. Then why."

"I don't know Moti. It's just a feeling that I can't seem to shake."

Moti was about to say something but Jodha's ears perked as she heard something, and she shushed Moti.

"Do you hear that? What is it?" She could hear something masked behind the thunders. A roar'Jodha didn't know if she was hearing right. It seemed as if the earth itself was shaking. An alarm went off in her head.

"He's here moti." A shudder went through her, the fine hairs on her body raised, and she experienced a moment of utter terror.

"Hay Krishna. We have to run. Come Jodha."

Moments later, Jodha and moti had mounted on the horse and were fleeing.

"Ahhh," Jodha heard moti scream.

"What is it Moti."

"He's here. He's behind us."

Jodha didn't need to ask who he was. She looked back and stared at a pair of rage filled eyes. She was not scared. No, she was not scared. She kept telling herself. What could he do? Force her, kill her'.she gulped.

Before she knew it'he was in front of her and her horse reared up. Moti screamed as she held onto Jodha for dear life. And then it was over. He was in front of her on his horse looking straight at her with anger and something else she could not read.

Jodha looked around to try to find a way out of this. His eyes seemed to follow hers.

"Don't even think about it. I would catch you again. Were you to hide in the ends of this earth, I would find you and bring you back.

He got off his horse then and walked towards her. Fire seemed to burn in his eyes. Jodha's heart was pounding in her chest. Terror caught in her throat as he grabbed her waist and lifted her off the horse.

Survival instincts replaced the terror. "Let me go," she said as she fought him but his hold on her was too tight.

"Stay still Jodha before I lose the last shred of my patience."

He let go of her waist and held onto her wrist. He started dragging her away.

"Stop. I don't want to go with you. Leave me you Jalad."

He turned then. It seemed she had caused him to lose his patience.

*******
