CHAPTER 6:

Jodha stares furiously at Jalal's retreating back. She calls her dasi to help her get ready and tells her to pick out any one of the new dresses. The servants got her ready while Jodha is in a state of shock over the conversation that just took place. She has no idea how she is going to be able to allow him to kiss her. She is repulsed by the mere thought of him doing that to her, but is also thankful that he is only asking for that and not anything more.

Jodha is lead by her guard to Jalal's apartments. He sees her dressed in her finery and is fixated on her beauty. He cannot believe that this woman is his; she is the most beautiful woman he has ever laid eyes upon. Jalal takes her hand, noticing that she flinches when he touches her. Biting back a sharp retort he takes her to see the artist.

Jalal is irritated at her flinching away from him. She took his hand, but he can't help but feel cheated at the thought that she truly is disgusted by him and doesn't want to be near him. He hopes that if he gives her some space and if they spend the next few weeks in each other's company that she will slowly thaw her hard feelings for him and eventually melt in his arms. Jalal does not want an unfeeling woman in his bed, and after listening to Khan Baba's advice, knows that he must try to be gentle with her, even when it goes against his immediate reaction.

After visiting with the murti artist, they head to the market. Jodha is about to mount her own horse, when Jalal comes to her and lifts her up onto his horse. She yells out in surprise, but he mounts behind her and off they go. Jodha sees that there are no servants within earshot, so doesn't feel she needs to hold back her anger.

Jodha "Now I can't ride my own horse. What is the meaning of this? I have no desire to ride astride with you. What do you think you are doing?

Jalal – My dear Sherni, If you noticed I didn't ask for your opinion. It is my wish for you to ride with me, so I can have you close. Have you thought that maybe I desire to take my kiss that you owe me now instead of waiting.

Jodha gulps – "right now? No, I forbid it. We are not alone and the servants are far too close for my comfort. "

Jalal – "when you challenge me like that, I have every desire to go against whatever it is you wish. Do you really think I care whether the servants see me kissing my wife. I am the Shenshah, no one dares to challenge or question me about what I do whether in public or private. Jodha….you seem to like challenging me, and that only stirs my need to conquer, to make you submit and to make you realize that I am your lord and master. And with that said , before she can resist, he holds her waist from behind, pushes her against his body and kisses the side of her neck…lingering, tasting, inhaling everything about Jodha, feeling every second of the physical bond that they share in that moment. .

Jodha – gets lost in the moment, but then comes to her senses and starts wiggling her body. STOP Jalal.

Jalal – Hearing his name on her lips makes him stop and he abruptly stops his horse. What did you just call me? Say it again?

Jodha – she doesn't know whether he is upset that she used his name or what she should do now. She looks down at the ground, feeling very uncomfortable and doesn't speak.

Jalal – lifts her chin so that she is staring at him, "That is the first time that you have called me anything. You seem to avoid it, not really calling me anything, but just speaking to me as if I'm insignificant. Let me remind you Jodha that I am your husband. I will do everything in my power to ensure you do not forget that. And I have no issue with you calling me by my name if you wish, but only when we are in private.

Jodha – you seem to have a habit of always issuing orders. What I call you will be my decision, but from the stories I have heard you are aptly named…the Rajputs call you Jallad…..

Jalal gets angry at hearing that name. He has been told before that that is what some people have called him, however until today it never had any effect on him.

He grabs Jodha – "say it again. I dare you to call me that again my dear Sherni?"

Jodha – never one to know when to stop, or to hear the veiled anger in Jalal's voice, she says it again, "Jallad, Jallad, Jallad. I have noticed nothing from you to warrant them calling you anything different. The way you married me forcefully and now treat me like a prisoner within the palace, and now forcing your attentions on me and making me ride with you. You show me no respect and yet expect me to respect you in return."

Jalal reacts aggressively " I have shown YOU no respect. Well if I'm going to be judged regardless of what I do, then maybe I should act disrespectfully Jodha. Maybe I should show you what it truly means to be treated as you accuse me of."

With that said, Jalal stops and dismounts. Before he can grab Jodha she quickly dismounts on the other side and starts to run towards the lake nearby. She doesn't know what he's going to do but her first instinct is to flee. She doesn't trust him and has no desire to be near him right now. Jalal motions to his guard to maintain their position and not to follow. Jalal catches up to her and pins her against a tree. They are both breathing heavily and Jodha is struggling against Jalal's painful grip on her arms.

Jodha – "I hate you…what don't you understand about this. I may be your wife but I have no desire to speak with or be near you. Go to one of your mistresses, use whomever you want but don't come near me. Let me go….."

"I hate you and your filthy conditions. Do you really think that by forcing me to be by your side that that is going to help build a relationship between us. We are married because you forced me, I would have rather died than gone through with the marriage, but I am not selfish like you. I had others to think about, whom I care about. But you….you care about nothing. You only want to exert your control over me. What the Rajputs call you, you are even worse than that. I HATE you!" Jodha glares at Jalal. Anger flashes in her eyes. "You want to own me, possess me…..then take it. I can't do anything to stop you. Do whatever it is you want with me, but leave me in peace afterwards so that I do not have to endure your presence afterwards. If you think you can break my will then you are wrong. I will survive, because that is what a Rajputani Rajkumari does….she endures and survives. But be assured you will not break me, control me or rule over me. I will stand stronger and prouder than before regardless of what you do."

Jalal is furious. No one has ever spoken to him so disrespectfully. She has provoked him and provoked him and right now he can't think clearly. His instinct and desire is to show her that her insolence and disrespect will not go unpunished. Passions on both sides are running high.

Jalal – You foolish woman. You seem to have no sense of when it would be best to shut that mouth of yours. You want to battle at every turn and are acting like a spoiled brat. What did you think it was going to accomplish by running away from me like that? Where were you planning on going? You have not only shown me that you are foolish, but that you have no sense on how I want my Malika to act. If I have to teach and instruct you at every turn be assured that I will take payment in kind. You seem to want to prove that I am the Janvir that you think I am? Well if janvir is what I am to you, then Janvir is what I will be. " Jalal goes to grab the front of Jodha's gown……..

Jodha hears what he says and realizes that she has pushed him beyond reason. How stupid can she be to push this man so far…..now what can she possibly do to bring him back to sanity? A tear falls down just as Jalal grabs the front of her gown. He feels the wetness and looks up …….

No sound can be heard, time is frozen for a moment. Jalal's hand on Jodha's gown, Jodha's tears flowing freely now, her eyes shut, her back ramrod straight. What will Jalal do…..how will Jodha' get herself out of this predicament………
