CHAPTER 5:

Jodha wakes up in the morning and decides to get ready. She sees a wardrobe full of clothes but doesn't even give them a second glance as she refuses to wear anything that he provides for her. She has already decided that if she has to wear clothes provided for by him, then she will pick out the clothes herself. She gets ready wearing the same clothes from yesterday.

Jodha has always done her prayers first thing in the morning before her morning meal. As she gets ready she realizes she has nothing, not one single thing that she was allowed to bring with her for her morning prayers and gets very upset. This is very important to her as she has NEVER missed a day of doing her morning Puja. She wonders how she will obtain the items she needs. Then she realizes that it will make her feel much better if she sings a hymn for now and contemplates the logistics later. Singing has always brought her peace and calmness to her state of mind.

As Jodha is singing she see's Jalal enter her living area from her peripheral vision and abruptly stops in mid sentence. She wishes she could have completed her Puja before he came but there is nothing she can do. She all of a sudden starts to feel uncomfortable''but this time it's not because of anything Jalal has done but of her own behavior. She is unable to come to terms with the husband in front of her and the teachings that she has been raised with. She always thought she would marry a Hindu man and he would understand everything she needed and the lifestyle that they had been raised with. He would know about the rituals that a married woman goes through once she is married and what happens the day after marriage, and yet she doesn't want to do any of that. She doesn't even have sindoor with her to place in her Mang, but she doesn't feel the absence of it because she doesn't feel married. This man, whom she hates more than anything else on earth is her husband, and yet she cannot with her heart come to terms with this situation. All of this and more running through Jodha's mind makes her look lost in her thoughts'..

Jalal stops in front of her and sees that something is disturbing her. She appears lost in her thoughts, and he immediately gets aggravated when he sees her wearing the same clothes as yesterday. He turns to go to her wardrobe and he notices the dinner dishes next to her bed''..everything that Khan Baba said to Jalal and any guilt about yesterday desert him immediately. He is instantly furious and turns to her in anger'''.

"JODHA"''Jalal yells. She immediately comes to the present moment and sees Jalal by her bed looking daggers at her. She then realizes that she left the dinner dishes beside her bed and forgot to get a servant to pick them up this morning.

Jodha ' not wanting the soldiers to get in trouble, "Before you get mad at anyone else, let me tell you that I made the dinner myself last night."

Jalal ' still very angry that his orders were countermanded " explain." Rationale thoughts have left him for the moment, for he would be happy to know that she didn't go hungry, but in the moment all he can think is that he was defied again by this woman.

Jodha explains how she came to make her dinner last night. He is impressed with her sharp wit but refuses to let her know this. Any weakness that he shows she will surely take advantage of, after all he knows that she hates him.

Jodha is scared at what his reaction will be. It was all good in the moment to beat him at his own game, but now she's sees him looking at her and she feels uncomfortable again. He slowly starts to approach her. "Was it really worth it to defy me by not joining me for dinner and making your own food instead?"

Jodha "Yes it was worth it. I have no desire to be in your company, even right now I wish you would just leave."

Jalal "but if I left, how will you be able to obtain that which you seek most right now. I have an offer for you if you are willing to listen and suffer my company for a few more minutes."

Jodha scoffs at his offer "what could you possibly have that I would be interested in? I have no desire to obtain anything from you."

Jalal ' "If you'd rather I leave"''he turns away''

Jodha ' "Nayhe rukhiye'... I will listen to what you have to say."

Jalal ' turns around again. "here is my offer. After observing you singing this morning, I realized that I have no idea what you need for your morning prayers and the palace will not have anything either for you. Therefore I propose that we both go together to buy whatever you require for your morning Puja. I have also called a sculpture artist for you, to make your Lord Krishna Murti. You can discuss with him the details and you can convert one of your rooms for you to do your Puja in. "

Jodha looks at him with surprise. Never in a million years would she have guessed that that was what he was going to say to her. She stutters with surprise'"I don't know what to say''."

Jalal ' "A simple thank you will suffice." With a pleased look on his face

Jodha ' irritated at having to thank him for anything but knowing that to be humble in this moment might just get her what she desires '.. "Yes, thank you."

Jalal ' actually you might not want to thank me just yet. I have a few conditions on this generous offer of mine.

Jodha looks at him sarcastically'."I knew there had to be something else'.first you get me to say thank you and now you add some conditions'.what game are you playing."

Jalal ' actually I'm not asking anything new from you. Condition number 1) you will dine with me whenever, wherever I wish you to; Condition 2) you wear what I want you to wear. That means that you can pick any of the clothes that are in your wardrobe, but I choose the clothing that enter it, and 3) You do not contradict any of my orders in front of anyone. If you choose to accept these conditions then failure on your part to abide by them will cost you. As I have no desire to interfere in your religious practice and will not take anything back that I give you, your forfeit will be one kiss for every act of defiance, where and when I choose to have that kiss is up to me. Do you accept my Sherni?

Jodha is at a loss for words. This is too much but she knows that he has her backed in a corner. If she doesn't' accept then she will not get her murti and puja items''but if she agrees'.oh my god, what a dilemma.

Before she can respond, he comes right up to her'.so close she can almost feel the hair on his face brush her cheek. He whispers in her ear'."Jodha, be relieved that I am only asking this of you'.when I actually have the RIGHT to take so much more from you than just kisses. Do you accept''.?"

Jodha shivers'..he is so close to her and she feels repulsed by his proximity. BUT, she also knows that what he says is true. In fact he could have come to her room last night, and there wasn't anything that she could have done about it. This new faade of Jalal is unnerving her. She would rather deal with the angry Jalal, not this coy, cunning and sensuous Jalal.

"Yes damn you I agree to your terms. You know very well that I do not have the option of not agreeing if I want my Krishnaji's Murti. I have one revision of your term; the kisses must be redeemed the day they are earned. You cannot add days up together."

Jalal ' "that's fair. And since you agree, then you should also be aware that you are already in violation of one of the rules. What you are wearing is not out of your new wardrobe, therefore you already owe me one kiss. Be ready in 1 hour my Sherni'.until then, Adab." And with a smirk, Jalal leaves before Jodha has the opportunity to provide any retort.

I won't be able to write anything new for the next 10 days or so, so I'll say sorry in advance for the delay. My husband is off on holidays and we are getting away without the kids for a few days😃. BUT that also means no Jodha Akbar for me as well. 😭😭
