What works for you in a dance performance?

Over the last couple of weeks, while discussing the performances, I noticed so many differing opinions on which act worked for whom and why. I thought it would be interesting to discuss how members here perceive this performance art form and how it plays into their like/dislike for a particular act.

For me personally, a very important quality is for the performer to be actively involved in their performance. Not just dancing, but even in the other 'forms of expression' like acting, music, etc, if a performer is passionate about their work, it will come through and strike a chord with the general audience. Doing the steps and getting movements correct is essential, but there has to be a driving force which connects the dancer to their performance. I feel it gives the act more of a purpose than someone merely performing for marks.

Technicality cannot be overlooked and the judges who score need to keep that in mind. And I enjoy seeing especially the non-dancers improving in this department over the weeks. As a viewer though, for me to enjoy an act I need to feel drawn to the performance and the performer. Hence, in addition to the choreography and dancing being of a suitable level, the above is important for me. In most dance shows, the acts I tend to skip are ones where I feel disconnected from the piece, even if the hand positions and footwork are flawless.

On that note- Discuss!

For me expressions, synchronisation and the chemistry between the partners count the most apart from choreography and dancing quality

Yeah, me too

I don't know much about technicality like you do and haven't watched much dance reality shows either

But dance either live performance on stage or competition show or in movies is enjoyable and entertaining only if it connects with the audience and for that to happen performer has to truly enjoy It
I think it cannot be taught, it has to come naturally

i guess be it a dancer or non dancer..100% dedication is a must...
u need to perform like u r enjoying nd not like completing a task...
synchronisation is again a very important factor or else it will go haywire...
nd obviously u should be capable if getting the steps right way..

For me, the music is the most important ... if I like the song, I automatically enjoy the dance much more. 😃
The involvement of the dancers, their expressions, their interactions with each other, their chemistry, the flow of the performance ... also the set up ... I love shadow dancing as it involves a lot of coordination between the partners, and if done well is most effective. The performance should be visually appealing. I'm not a trained dancer so the technicalities don't bother me much ... except in classical dance, where I notice them a lot. I like classical/Indian dance based performances more than the others ... but there I am more critical of performance, since I do know something about them.

For me personally a lot of things matter

-the contestants dedication should be seen
-expression
-audience connect
-technicality (I lose interest especially if I see the toes aren't pointed in certain dance forms)
-improvement
-chemistry between partners

I've zero knowledge on technicalities 😆
But I do know your feet should be pointed (think everyone knows this one lol) and you need a good posture (which varies in each dance form0. So that's there.
I think chemistry is VERYY important between two people and if you have that it's easier to have your dance synchronized. Also, it's an absolute treat to watch on screen when two people are just on fire. ☺️

Expressions and the right movements make it a hit for me. Sometimes unique concepts executed with perfection also works like wonders.

People really underestimate the usage of good costumes, sometimes that's a make or break situation. It could really add dimension to your act or absolutely destroy it.

I also think that involvement is extremely important. If you're not feeling what you're doing, it will come across just like that - emotionless. I love it when a person just enjoys and gives it their everything. (the same point TM pointed out)

^^YES OMG! A good song gets me hyped!

Agree with everything you have said!

For me to be interested in the performance, I must like the music or there should be an interesting concept that will make me want to watch the act. For the performance to be good, I feel there should be chemistry between the partners, appropriate facial expressions, Technicalities (and rigor of choreography), completing the steps, fluidity within the steps, grace where it's appropriate, visual appeal, and a connection made with the audience. It should make me feel involved with the act. And for any performance to deserve a "true" 10, there must be a "Wow" factor--and that usually comes with creativity in choreography and the concept of the act. I say a "true" 10 based on a contestant's individual act. Knowing myself, I know I may say that a contestant deserved 10 based on a comparative basis with other acts, but it isn't "truly" a 10 performance.

From a subjective perspective, in order for me to watch a contestant, I must like his/her personality. They should be respectful towards others. I don't really care to watch any performance of any contestants who are egoistic or a snob no matter how good they are. Luckily, in this season, I like all the contestants so far and will genuinely feel bad when any of them will go out before their time simply because they all are hard-working and it's sad to see them leave. I just wish JDJ/ colors would allow the eliminated contestants to showcase their prepared act before they bid adieu because they have put in time and efforts and deserve a chance to showcase their final act.

Nice topic Jane!
What works for me or rather what attracts me to a dance performance...

Firstly, the dance form, the song, and the theme.

The quality of dance ofcourse. The movements need to be to the point...to the beat.
If there are lifts, how effortlessly are they being executed is very important.
If there is a prop, how is tht being used in the dance sequence.
The use of the stage.

obv, the chemistry between the couple is important.
Now, this show is Dancing with the stars, so i look to see how well the choreographer brings out the best in the Star...how well he/she projects the star...yet is significant in his/her act as well.

The expressions, lip syncing to the song(for the appropriate parts ofc) are some other things that i see in a performance

A good performer, for me, brings all these things together along with showing us a variety of dance forms.
I know that most of the stars who participate arent Pros. So, being too technical isnt fair with the non-pros.
But if there is a Pro, I'd like the judges to point out the technicalities. I wish Ganesh Hegde does tht. I miss this in JDJ.

Thanks for your replies, everyone! You've all raised some very valid points and I agree with all of them.

The music point raised by a couple of you is really original though! I've never come across this as a factor. Now that I think about it, I realise how true this is. There have been times when the wrong choice of song has really taken away from the performance!

@nine2: I agree about the '10 performance'. I've really been put off by the full marks awarded in Colors' JDJ precisely for this reason. Sony's JDJ gave even a flawless act a 9 specially once the competition reached its midpoint. Really extraordinary performances got 10 and that's spoiled me I think.
And till last year they did allow the contestant to show-case their performance. In fact, there was a face-off and eliminations were conducted based on how well they performed that week. Don't know what they will do this time, hard to believe Dipika lost in a face-off with Ashish but one never knows.
