You consider Black to be Masterpiece? This was one of the worst/over the top movies I've EVER seen. Amitabh was downright aweful in the movie. He overacted like crazy. The ONLY person who acted well in the movie was that girl who played the younger version of Rani. The direction of the movie was terrible. I couldn't believe how so many peopel were praising this movie to the hilt. I thought maybe there is something I'm missing. I showed this movie to 5 non-Indians who had no knowledge of Indian movies. And all of them thought (like me) the movie was pathetic. SLB tried way too hard to make people cry at the expense of being realistic. No wonder the movie was not even considered for the Oscars. He has too high an opinion about himself. He thinks he's the greatest director ever born.
All that aside, a director is like a manager of a project. Although he is aware of and makes decisions about various aspects, he is NOT an expert in every field. For example, the movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam had great music, but that does not mean he has great knowledge of the technical aspects of music. If he was to compose he would fall flat on his face. The reason there are subject matter experts in each and every area of movie making is because the director cannot be expected to know everything. He has an overall vision about the project where the various experts help him bring that vision into reality.
You mentioned shreya Ghoshal, well he heard her on SRGMP and liked her voice and used her in a film. He didn't actually discover her. He merely recognized and appreciated her talent and then consulted with his music director who though that yes Shreya is a good singer and can be used. Do you think for a minute that if Ismail Darbar thought that Shreya could not sing well enough that Sanjay would have insisted on using her?.
Dude, I showed this movie to about 16-20 peops at my home when i had a get together (indians and non.. and all professionals), and they all loved it... honey, when somebody comes up with a negative reaction to a movie, then we'd end up looking for those flaws in that movie.. it happens all the time. when we read bad reviews of a movie, then we tend not to watch it or liek it. so if your 5 friends didn't like the movie, then they prob just shared your views!
Oh and it wasn't nominated for the Oscars is becuz it's not an original story.. there have been other films made based on Helen Keller.
look, i dont know sanjay bhansali.. .all i know is i like his movies and that he's an exceptional director. the topic he touched on in Black, and the beautiful way he directed it, how many directors do you know would actually make a non-commercial film like that and make it so beautifully? Astitva, Black, Chandni Bar, Pinjar.. they're all in a class of their own. But again, these are not just my opinions, but majority of the populations in India and all over the world. But whatever, everybody's entitled to their own opiinion.
As far as Shreya's concerned.. yeah, he saw her on sa re ga ma, but look at how many singers have come across that platform in the past 15 years? why just her? She rose to instant stardom after devdas! tomorrow if I'm on a show and one of the judges watches me and likes my performance and offers a role, the credit goes to HIM for initiating the launch and making me a superstar! She herself gives him the credit for it.
Agreed, a director doesn't have specialties in every field.. but he knows enough to know whats needed in each category. You mentined that a director may not know how to compose music.. fine, he can't.. But i've seen some awful movies with good music. That's when you say, ok, this director is only a movie director.. People like Subhash Ghai, S Bhansali, Vishal Bhardwaj, are not just movie directors.. but they know good music, good editing, good choreography, etc.. SLB is not technical like Farah, but he knows good talent. Look at him.. only 4 movies in his belt, and he is still at the top.
