AFTER a five-year break, actor Renuka Shahane is back to pursue a career which she left for her kids. Renuka now plays the character of Anjali in the recent show 'Jeete Hain Jiske Liye' (Sony). The actor gets in a conversational mood… Break ke baad "This break from acting was spent in taking care of my children. My kids are now aged four (Shouryaman) and two (Satyendra). The role that I was offered was interesting. Sandeep Sikcand (creative head Sony) managed to convince me about it. I made this decision because my mother could take care of the kids. My husband (actor Ashutosh Rana) also persuaded me." 'Jeete Hain Jiske Liye' "I have been an instinctive actor. My acting depends on inputs from the writer, director and co-stars. It's a team effort. I have not played a char acter like Anjali before. Anjali is an orphan who has a positive attitude.
Though she does get hurt easily, she covers it up. She has a wonderful relationship with her husband and children. She allows her children to do what she couldn't as a child. Anjali is not always sweet. She has difficult shades too." Mama mia "Shouryaman and Satyendra are very fond of Anjali and love to see me on hoardings. My elder son says that he wants to act. I have been there with them 24/7, so they don't like it when I leave for the shoots." Then and now "This is the first time that I am doing a daily. One has to put in long hours.

The pattern of shooting has also changed. Short shots are taken after a scene whether the scene demands it or not. Also, directors are changed every new day. Earlier we worked with one director all through." Simple me "I have been getting offers for films but I am not interested. I am much more comfortable doing television. I have never been a glamorous person.

I am in this profession because of my love for acting. My lifestyle is simple." 'Fan'fare "During these years at home, I forgot that I am an actor. So, it's nice to know that people still love to see me on screen. I keep getting letters from fans. People come up and say that they have missed seeing me. It's good to know that I have not been forgotten." Futurescope "I never plan for the future and neither do I have any dreams. But someday I'd like to direct. My sons are too young to decide what they want to do.

They can pursue a career of their choice. Their profession should be their passion."

What our actors have planed for Holi on 4 March

Here is what our actors have planed for the years celebration of colours- Holi on 4 March. Read on...

Murli Sharma
I buy special locks every year and lock myself inside the house! It's not like I HATE Holi but I'm really allergic to the colours. Even colours in Pepsi and Fanta aggravate me so I can only drink white drinks like 7up. As a kid and even up till my college graduation I used to play like mad on Holi. The preparations would start three days in advance; buying balloons, filling them and keeping them in a bucket.

Nowadays I make plans with my niece and nephew who I love more than anything. I help them buy colours, pichkari and hundreds of balloons. We filled them up, get everything ready and hide them in the house.

On Holi itself I see which room in my house I would like to spend the day in and lock myself up. I have to watch out for friends who are out to get me. They keep making plans to throw colour on me so I allow only my decent friends to visit. They come put a tikka and leave otherwise it's strictly no entry!

Achint Kaur
I don't play Holi. Even when I was a kid it was very rare in my house to go out and play Holi. I must have played maybe 4-5 times in my life! Last year some of my friends came over and we had a get together. There is no fixed agenda for the day.

Aryan Vaid
I'll be going to Pune and celebrating with friends. We'll probably be celebrating with lots of bhang! There won't be too much colour throwing. I'm okay with the water but I can't stand colour, especially oil paints.

Last year I was hidden in my house for the whole of Holi. I woke up really late at about noon and I stayed indoors. I didn't step out till 6 in the evening.

When I was a kid, obviously Holi was a much bigger celebration. It always coincided with exams so it was the one day when we were allowed to take a break from studying. I'd fill up balloons and throw them at complete strangers! I really loved the night before Holi when the Holika would be lit. I would really look forward to that.

Renuka Shahane
This year I'll be working but last year I had a blast playing Holi below my building with my husband and kids. I actually hate Holi but it was because of my kids that I played. We used pichkaris and everything. It was a real wet Holi and it was great fun for the four of us. The reason I liked it so much was because there wasn't anyone we didn't know there. It was only family.

I would hardly play Holi when I was younger. I must have played till I was 8. I hated (and still hate) all the colours. The fact that anyone and everyone comes and throws balloons and colour on you is very unappealing.

Amar Upadhyay
My building is having a party this year so I'm going to be playing there. Last year I didn't have time to celebrate as I was shooting in Gorakhpur. When I was younger I'd celebrate Holi in the building and around the area I was staying. All my Holis have been fantastic. I'd play with balloons, colours, everything! I used to play with hard colours, the type that don't wash off but now I play with light colours that come off easier.

Sai Deodhar" src="http://www.indya.com/images/sai.jpg" width=125 align=left>Sai Deodhar
Holi is a very very big festival for us. Me and Shakti love Holi and we spend the day playing with friends in the morning then hopping to other parties throughout the day. We usually wind up by around 7 in the evening.

Last year for Holi I went to the Zoom party with Shakti and then later we moved on to a friend's place. When I was a kid we would have a Holi party every year in the building. Everyone would pool in money and we'd have a lot of food to eat in addition to playing like crazy. It was great fun.

ASHWINI KALSEKAR (Addy)
You have been playing negative characters for some time now. Are you again playing a negative character in Jeete Hain Jiske Liye?
Yes, I am used to playing a negative character since I did Jigyaasa. As far as JHJL is concerned, to the viewer, this role will look a negative character, but actually it is positive as far as my character of Adira is concerned. Please elaborate.
Adira is the buwa of Dhanrajgir (Ayub Khan) who is a businessman. Somewhere in-between Dhanrajgir dies. It is then that Adira takes over the business which she expands, so much so that she builds a mansion for the family. Later, once Adira is told by her family members that she was only the caretaker, she gets enraged. From here on she looks out for methods to destabilise the family. Any one in Adira's place would have done just that, because it is a matter of one's security. Your character has an enchanting look.
Adira is very stylised on the lines of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, but I haven't followed them. Right from my rings to the earrings, everything has been so designed to rev up my character. And what about your character?
Every grey character is always given a powerful look and has to mainly emote through the eyes. The same goes with Adira. The entry of Adira is always accompanied by an ominous background score a la Gabbar Singh in Sholay. Then there are moments when Adira screams "That's all" after which no one dares to talk.

Tell us about the films you have acted in.
Besides doing serials like Shanti, CID, K3 Pali Hill, Ek Aur Mohabbat, in which I played Draupadi, and Naya Zamana, I have done films like Khakee, Musafir, Apaharan and Ankahee.I am currently doing Johny Gaddar and two films for Vikram Bhatt.

Tellywood gears up for the Holi Blast !

Holi is the festival of colours. Time to invite friends over for some thandai, bhang and of course to let your hair down and shed inhibitions.

We spoke to a few tellystars about their Holi plans this year, childhood memories and of course about all the on-screen holi sequences in their respective tv shows.

Naman Shaw :

I love Holi. Last year I couldn't play as I was shooting most of the time. But this year, I have applied for leave and I will definitely be playing with colours. As a child, I used to play holi in Calcutta wherein we used to compete with people from different buildings. One holi I remember when I happen to consume some bhang but it turned out to be fake; as I didn't get a kick.

Samiksha :

Unfortunately I will be shooting on Sunday for Zaara. For the first time, I regret the fact I am shooting round the clock. All the soaps have a holi sequence but since I am doing a Muslim social (Zaara) there is no scope for any holi sequence. Two years back, I had gone on a pool party. I drank bhang and felt I am not high yet publicly went on dancing for many hours without realizing I am high.

Renuka Shahane:

I never use to play Holi in the past. But lately, I have started playing with colours thanks to my two children and Ranaji (Ashutosh Rana). But playing Holi on the sets of Jeete hai Jiske Liye has been a very good experience. We never felt like we were shooting for the episode. Also my co-stars are very fun-loving and don't let go by any opportunity to enjoy on occasions like these.

Rituraj
:

I love Holi. This time while celebrating Holi on the sets of Jeete Hai.. I realized one more thing about Holi that one doesn't need to get drunk to enjoy Holi. The colours itself are intoxicating.

Anoop Soni :

The last time, I played Holi in a big way was with Ashutosh Rana some years ago. I had so much of bhaang and did so many crazy things thereafter that I decide not to indulge in bhaang ever in life.

Manini De Mishra
:

Being a delhite, Holi has always been a family affair. But since I have moved to Mumbai, Holi has only reduced to a Page 3 party with people wishing and kissing each other. I have fond memories of raw Holi that we used to play as kids. But, I don't like the touchy-feely Holi. I like putting vermillion on friends and having sweets on holi. Also, my hubby Mihir doesn't enjoy Holi that much.

Rajesh Kumar :

For many years now I have stopped playing Holi simply because I end up playing on the sets of my shows. Currently on the sets of Kulvaddhu, I have been shooting for the Holi sequence. I feel on Holi the colours should be replaced by cowdung and mud.
My most memorable Holi was in college when I drank Bhang. I went off to sleep and got up only the next day.

Jennifer Winget :

I don't play Holi as such. Last year, I played Holi on the sets of Kassauti Zindagi kay. This year too there's a holi sequence and I might even go for a Holi Party. Most memorable holi was when I used to throw balloons on people as a kid.

Rahil Azam :

I feel Holi is the best way to get your hair coloured in the most inexpensive way. I have already got my hair coloured recently (laughs) so I don't need to play Holi. Above that on the sets of Betiyaan Ya Paraya Dhan, I have already played Holi as a part of shooting sequence. If only my friends turn up up Holi I will play Holi. Every time I play Holi it becomes memorable.

Sampada Vaze
:

Post wedding this is my first holi. I am going for a private party at an imported Yacht, which a friend has hired, from an Australian couple who comes from Australia every year. Most memorable holi was few years back when I drank Bhang for the first time and felt hungry to the extent that I had Pizza, Biryani and Burger in one go. Then I slept for twenty hours at a stretch. Holi is one festival, which is for everyone.

It's party time for Anoop Soni and Ayub Khan

The cast of Sony's Jeete Hain Jiske Liye celebrated holi before hand, just in case they don't get to do it on the day due to their shooting schedule. Ayub Khan and Anoop Soni had loads of fun. Ayub says, "We actors celebrate each festival so many times with our ongoing spikes in the serials that when the actual festivals come, we are very weary of celebrations. But I am having much fun with Anoop, Vishal (Singh), Rituraj, Renuka (Shahane) and the gang." Recalling a particular holi experience, Anoop says, "The last time, I played Holi in a big way was with Ashtosh Rana some years ago. I had so much of bhaang and did so many crazy things thereafter that I decide not to indulge in bhaang ever in life."

Life comes a full circle!

News has floated that Ashwini Kalsekar. will once again revive her association with Sony's CID. On popping some memory pills, one can recall that years back, this talented actor enjoyed a sound spell on this long running hit investigative show before hitting jackpot as Jigyasa with Zee's Kasamh Se. Producer - director, BP Singh has confirmed this comeback by stating, "She will appear on my show in the not too distant future. Ashwini will be playing a senior cop and will be seen in quite a few episodes."

Kalsekar, who has bagged this year's Indian Telly Award for best actress in a negative role, was in fact invited by Singh for the recently held 10-year celebratory bash for CID. And it was at this occasion that the director offered her to join them back to which Ashwini agreed.

We are sure this Maharashtrian mulgi will again woo her audiences as her golden days are already on the roll, with Sony's Jeete Hain Jiske Liye and a-soon-to-be-unveiled project in her kitty.

My woman of substance

8th March is the red letter day for the celebration of womanhood - of liberty, equality, freedom and justice.

Lets celebrate the anniversary of this momentous day by asking some of the eminent TV personalities, who they feel is a woman of substance, a phenomena they look up to.

Renuka Shahane

I admire my mother Shanta Gokhale. She's a journalist and has balanced home and her career very efficiently, giving me and my brother the best of everything and installing the right values in us. I don't admire any public figure in particular.

Apara Mehta

I hold Mother Teresa in high esteem. The kind of work she has done is unbelievable and no one could second her. It would have been a dream come true to meet her if she was alive. She lived a selfless life, has been a real mother to the needy. She truly symbolizes a woman.

Manasi Joshi Roy

I basically admire all women who manage home and work with perfect ease. I myself am doing so. Talking about someone in particular, it's my mom Usha Joshi who is a perfect woman for me. She has brought us very well, has managed home and career perfectly and that is quite an achievement. It is not easy to manage everything simultaneously for any woman. I am a reflection of my mom and trying to manage all areas of life, personal as well as professional, with precision and create a balance.

Shwetta Kawaatra

My mother Mrs. Vinita Kawaatra is someone whom I admire the most. She is strong minded and independent. She is also a director of a company called Oriflame. I have got the values from her. I can't relate to people I don't know so no question of taking anyone else's name.

Moulli Ganguly

I admire my grandmother for all what she did for her daughter (my mother) and granddaughter (that's me). She was an all rounder. It was difficult in those times to manage home and career for a woman. In those days the concept of helpers like today didn't exist. I also admire Kiran Bedi for setting a trend in a new field which opened so many opportunities for women. She believed in her dreams and executed them, not everyone can do that. I also admire Sonia Gandhi. I liked her even before she entered politics as she lived a life of dignity. She has survived everything calmly. I would love to live a life like these women.

Shonali Malhotra Sonii

It's Rakhi Sawant for her guts and honesty. She is very straight forward and honest. I like the way she conducts herself. I have met her at my gym and we share the same trainer. I also admire Angilina Joe, not for looks but for her attitude and responsibility towards adopting children. Sushmita Sen too is in the list for making giving Reenee a beautiful life and facing the society with ease. I would love to do something like that in future and for that I have to be self-sufficient in every sense of the word.

No Admission!

Renuka Shahane and her co-stars of Jeete Hain Jiske Liye were refused admission at a five-star resort at Madh Island because they were drenched in colours, after shooting a Holi sequence.

Renuka Shahane and Ayub Khan in Jeete Hain Jiske Liye

Renuka Shahane, along with her co-actors of Jeete Hain Jiske Liye, had an unpleasant experience at a restaurant recently, when they were denied entry for being covered with Holi colours. The cast had been shooting for a Holi sequence at Madh Island, and decided to go out for a five-star lunch before washing up. However, inspite of them revealing their identities as TV stars, the actors were turned away from the hotel, much to their anger and dismay. Renuka Shahane, who plays Anjali in the serial, says, "We were scheduled to shoot a Holi sequence throughout the day. We were already halfway though, when we decided to take a lunch break as the hard day's shoot had left us really hungry. We drove to a nearby resort but were surprised when the guards didn't let us enter. My co-actors like Anoop Soni, Rituraj

Rituraj Singh aka Tarun in the serial

Singh and Ayub Khan tried to explain the situation to the guards but they just wouldn't budge from their stand. At last we had to get our food packed and return to the sets."

Rituraj Singh aka Tarun recalls, "I guess the resort follows strict rules. We were all left standing outside the premises till our food was ready. "

Ajay Pardhi, the duty manager at the hotel, who was present during the incident says, "We did recognise the actors. But they wanted to go near the swimming pool. We could not allow that since our swimming pool is not open to the general public. We have to be strict with our rules and regulations to keep the place neat and clean.
