I t seems that ever since Smriti Iraani saw the promos of Renuka Shahane's show Jeete Hain Jiske Liye, she has been impressed with the latter's post-motherhood look. Apparently, Iraani has called up Shahane for some dietary tips. The matriarch of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is pulling out allthe stops to make her Sony show Virrudh stand apart from the current fare on television. Virrudh's promos show Iraani in a glamorous look– a far cry from her grey hair and wrinkled avatar as Tulsi Viraani.

Will there be a face off between Smriti and Renuka?

Though the actors may not really come to blows in real life, both will be competing for TRPs. Renuka Shahane's comeback serial Jeete Hain Jiske liye on Sony is slated for the same time slot as Smriti Irani's Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi bahu Thi. While Kyunki has been topping the TRP ratings for many years now, Renuka's serial has begun its run only a few days back. Will Renuka's smile do the magic for her this time around or will Smriti's tears wipe away the TRPs. Only time will tell...

Renuka Shahane is back

Mumbai(UNI):Noted actress Renuka Shahane makes a comeback on the small screen after a gap of five years, saying she is more comfortable with Television than films. Talking to reporters at the pre-launch press conference here today, Renuka, star of television serials like 'Circus', 'Sailab', 'Kora Kagaz' and 'Surabhi' said she could not have thought of a good comeback vehicle than that of her character Anjali in 'Jeete Hai Jiske Liye', who goes through an emotional upheaval after she is denied the right of motherhood by the family she loves.

Replying to questions, the actress said, ''Films cannot give me the variety and depth of roles television has to offer''. Stating that she took a little time to adjust to the grind of a daily soap, which she is doing for the first time in her 20 year career on television, Renuka said the small screen had changed a lot in the last five years. I have signed a contract and also seen my hoardings on the streets, which has never happened before.

Renuka, who is married to actor Ashutosh Rana and is a mother of four year old Shourya and two year old Satyen, said she never missed the limelight in the last five years where television characters grew to a larger than life image because she was never ambitious.''During my five year hiatus away from the limelight, I completed writing a film script about a mother-child relationship. It is a pyschological thriller. I plan to direct the film myself provided I get a good producer,'' she added.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Creative Director of Sony Television, Sandeep Sickand said apart ''from Jeete Hai Jiske Liye'', to be beamed from February 5 at 2230 hrs, the channel is also launching ''Durgesh Nandini'' at 2200 hrs. Responding to a question on whether Sony was planning a KBC like programme like the 'Chappar Phad Ke'' game show hosted by Govinda few years ago, CEO of Sony Television Kunal Dasgupta said no such programme was on the anvil.

Kunal said the channel was all set to regain its No 2 position in 2007 as it had slipped to the third position in 2006. ''But, 'Jhalak Dikhla ja' and 'Big Boss' have created a buzz around Sony and we are ready to regain our lost position,'' he said and denied that a heavy dose of non-fiction programming resulted in the loss of its rating position among viewers.

Mumbai Mirror looking'07 ahead

Small screen, big EXPECTATIONS

Couch potatoes can get set to aim their remote control at…

Kaun Banega Crorepati

Will the 'King Khan' brand emerge victorious once again because of KBC? If the current on-air promos are anything to go by, the show might just be bigger and better than the previous version. Against all apprehensions, that the new version's ratings will not match those of the previous versions hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, the sponsors are keeping their fingers crossed for the biggest telly event of 2007. With the biggest stars of Bollywood- Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan being at loggerheads, this is just the opportunity for SRK to prove that he can step into Big B's shoes, as he proved in the remake of Don.

The Biggest Loser

After Amitabh Bachchan and SRK, it's the time for macho man, Suniel Shetty to make his television debut. The Biggest Loser is an adaptation of the popular American reality show of the same name. Suniel Shetty will be anchoring the show which will deal with health, fitness and motivation. The actor is the obvious choice, thanks to his bulging biceps and wittiness quotient. The contestants in the show will be overweight people who lose flab under the guidance of a celebrity trainer to get a healthy body and hefty prize money.

Kis Rishtey Se…

After all the overdose of 'K' factor with Kahaani.., Kyunki…, Kasamh Se and others, here comes another K…. The show is Kis Rishtey Se. Rumoured to be based on a popular novel; the script will be penned by Bollywood biggies. The new soap has Shabbir Ahluwalia and Karan Wahi as male leads and Ronit Roy in a cameo. The story revolves around two stepsisters and the turmoil in their life. The female lead is yet to be finalised. The show will be targetted at urban audiences.

Sa Re Ga Ma Pa

This is one of the few music shows that has been running successfully for almost a decade. The show has strived to be a platform for budding talents through its platforms Challenge 2005 and Ek Main Aur Ek Tu. This year, music lovers will see the same show with almost the same flavour but without its director Gajendra Singh.

Jeete Hain Jiske Liye

This is one show that everyone is looking forward to. After Kora Kaagaz, Surabhi girl Renuka Shahane is making a comeback in Jeete Hain Jiske Liye. The serial has been much talked about as it is the comeback vehicle of Renuka after a decade. The show has also been in the news for the legal notice sent to Balaji alleging that the generation leap in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki is similar to the concept. The show is an adaptation of an international telenovella La Madratssa.

Viruddh

After Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Sa Aasman, here comes another soppy saga from producer Smriti Irani. Writer Kamalesh Pandey of Rang De Basanti fame is writing the script and the shooting is going to start from early February. The cast is an amalgamation of the choicest and the best talents. The new serial has big telly stars like Sushant Singh making his comeback on TV, Ashwini Kalsekar, Vikram Gokhale, Achint Kaur, Govind Namdev and Smriti irani herself.

Nach Baliye and Jhalak Dikhhla Ja

Rocking the nation big time with their dance moves and the respective winners, both Nach Baliye and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa are expected to come up with another season of popcorn entertainment. Both Sony and Star One are keen on airing the next season of the shows. If the insiders are to be believed, things are going to be bigger and better next time with big celebrities dancing to popular tunes.

Durgesh Nandini

Sony is toying with the idea of a daily soap named Durgesh Nandini, an adaptation of the celebrated Bengali novel by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee by the same name. It's a period drama which revolves around a village girl, who is named heir to a large estate, when her father (who is a businessman) passes away. She has to shift to the city to not only manage the fortunes but also deal with a family who is alien to her. The family is also hostile to her as she is the custodian to the entire business empire and has turned up in their lives out of the blue. Although the cast is yet to be finalised, it is rumoured that Tassnim Sheikh, Anupam Bhattacharya and Shubhaavi will find their way into the serial. The hunt is still on for the lead actor. The show will be produced by Shobhna Desai and it will be aired on the prime time band.

Extreme MakeOver

After playing the ugly duckling in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, followed by her winning score in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, Mona Singh is going to host the reality show Extreme Makeover. It is a formatted show, where people born with defects or who had accidents will be undergoing surgery in the show. As the actress underwent a makeover as Jassi, she is the apt choice for anchoring the show. Mona has been saying that the show will target people who are not able to lead normal lives because of the defects and who cannot afford the surgery. There will be a panel of doctors and dentists and the crew would go to the houses of participants let audiences know the 'before and after' stories and effects.

Renuka Shahane makes a comeback with "Jeete Hain Jiske Liye"
THAT FAMILIAR SMILE Renuka Shahane. Photo: V.V. Krishnan By Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty Twenty years after Surbhi, Renuka Shahane's wide, toothy smile is still etched in our memory. After doing some films and television work, Renuka got married to actor Ashutosh Rana and gradually receded from the lights-camera-action scene. And now, a mother of two, with a trimmer waistline, the talented actress is back to what she is best remembered for - the telly. She is on Sony's new daily, Jeete Hain Jiske Liye. Produced by Tony and Diya Singh, best known for serials like Banegi Apni Baat and Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, the Monday-to-Thursday (10.30 p.m.) soap will feature Renuka in the lead role of Anjali. A girl who grows up in an orphanage, meets a rich businessman, marries him and desperately wants to be a mother, till one day she gets to know that she can't become one. The half-hour saga takes viewers through many situations, and a lot depends on Renuka to keep the viewers hooked. Sony TV has tried to break into the strong weekday programming line-up of STAR Plus. Not taking on STAR's assets such as Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kaun Banega Crorepati, it is targeting Kahin to Hoga viewers with Jeete Hain... at 10.30 p.m. and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii with yet another new serial, Durgesh Nandini, at 10 p.m. Says Renuka, "I am sure viewers will like the serial. I am thankful to Sandeep Sickand of Sony TV for convincing me to return to television. With my children still quite young, I was in two minds." Television, which has undergone many changes in the last few years, says Renuka, now looks for new faces with each new story, and "so I feel I am extremely lucky to have bagged this role after a five-year sabbatical." Typecasting Appreciated for her small, but convincing role in Rajshri Productions' all-time blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Renuka will play a bahu in this serial too. A clear instance of typecasting, though the actress says she has no problem with it.

"Everyone gets trapped in it, even big actors. I am beginning to accept it," she says, flashing that popular smile. With no film offers yet, she would consider the big screen only if any good role comes her way. Says Renuka, "I would feel I have done justice to the role if people forget me and remember only my character Anjali."

Sophisticated and Westernised from the outside, but devious and manipulative by nature, that's how one can describe Adira. She is allergic to all things good, people or otherwise. She sees evil in everything. But she is classy, impeccably turned out and a woman of few words. She is suspicious by nature and her sarcasm is always sugar coated. Her personal staff includes Sylvie the make-up woman and Margarita, the hairdresser, who are daily visitors at the Dhanrajgir household. Adira never fails to belittle Anjali for her middle-class ways and according to her she is not worthy of Aman. "But there is a justification for the way Adira talks and behaves," says Ashwini Kalsekar who plays the wicked woman Adira in Jeete Hain Jiske Liye.

A divorcee who brought up her nephew Aman Dhanrajgir who lost his parents during childhood, Adira sacrificed her own happiness for Aman's sake. Though a rich and powerful woman she couldn't tolerate her business tycoon nephew marrying an orphan girl. "That's her main grudge against Anjali who she thinks doesn't deserve to be Aman's wife. But her biggest insecurity is her losing the family wealth and property if Anjali has a child. Therefore she tries her best to prevent Anjali from becoming a mother," explains Ashwini who is not new to playing an outright negative and manipulative character. Her role as Jiggyasa, in Kasamh Se, got her the Indian Telly award for best negative performance.

"I played the kitchen politics very well in Kasamh Se," laughs Ashwini. Then after a long pause she adds, "Nobody is born wicked. It's the circumstances that make a person negative and vicious."

Needless to say she finds it quite challenging to play negative characters. "Oh, I love it. But the real challenge is in playing each character differently. And that's entirely my headache. It is my responsibility to play Adira differently," she adds.

On a break from Kasamh Se where she may come back to play her wicked game again when Ekta takes the call, Ashwini is happy to be part Jeete Hain Jiske Liye. "This show is very different. Tony and Deeya Singh are really good producers to work with," she smiles.

The actress who has been around for 12 years, ever since she debuted on television in 1995 with Shanti has played the tough cop in CID for six long years. But the role she calls her best is that of ACP Nethra Menon in Siddhant. "She was a tough woman with lot of aura around her," says Ashwini who also figures in Smriti Irani's forthcoming home production Viruddh. "I really can't talk about it. But yes, it's a good role."

'I'm under no compulsions to explain my relationship with Murli'

Ashwini Kalsekar says she avoids talking about her personal life as she's paid a heavy price for being a loud mouth in the past

RESHMA S KULKARNI

The stylish vamp of our telly-scene is back with her evil ways again! After making a huge impact through her portrayal of the wicked Jigyasa in Kasamh Se, Ashwini Kalsekar is back as Adira Dhanrajgir in Sony's Jeete Hain Jiske Liye to make life hell for protagonist Renuka Shahane. "I love unleashing my wicked side on hapless victims on screen!" squeals Ashwini, who, in a serious vein however adds, "but as much as I love doing negative roles, I also lament the fact that people seem to have forgotten that this is the same Ashwini who has played a righteous cop in CID, who had shed buckets of tears in K Street Pali Hill and who had once made the audience roll in the aisles with laughter through her comedy acts. All those roles seem to have evaporated from around me now; people seem afraid and unsure about me when it comes to other kinds of roles. I'd like to tell them loud and clear, that folks, I'm very much willing and able to do a variety of roles; why, I can also play a tearful bahu in a saas-bahu opera!" claims Ashwini, who is thankful that she at least getting realistic roles in Bollywood.
A fire brand to boot and not the kind to mince words, Ashwini however goes into a shell when quizzed about rumours linking her with actor Murli Sharma. Her take: "It's not as if I am afraid of admitting to what I am
doing in my life. In fact, at one of the prestigious awards function recently, I have publicly acknowledged Murli as a pillar of support. Hoards of people have seen me walking in with him at many events and parties. I'm certainly not denying his existence in my life but I'm under no compulsions to explain the nature of my relationship with him and that's because I have my parents and family to care for and protect. I don't want them to be hounded with barbed questions about what their daughter is doing. The moment I decide to make a commitment to anyone, I will announce it myself. Till then, I think, silence is golden." When quizzed as to why Ashwini has been taking such a cautious stance lately, she retorts, "As regards my personal life, the reasons are as I just mentioned but generally too, I have paid a heavy price for having a loud mouth. Just imagine, I haven't been able to gather a decent amount of money in 12 long years in the industry to buy a tiny house for myself ! And that's because in this industry filled with sycophants and suckers, loud-mouthedness is the biggest non-virtue you can afford to have. I think its high time I kept my mouth stitched a bit and focus on my personal priorities" remarks Ashwini. However, adding as a final word, "But you never know when the original firebrand Ashwini may resurface. I can't keep my mouth shut against atrocities for too long!"

Of Grit and Determination

Sony Entertainment Television has started beaming its new shows Durgesh Nandini and Jeete Hain Jiske Liye, that depict women of determination. A talk with Rinku Ghosh and Ashwini Kalsekar who essay important roles in the two serials...

RINKU GHOSH
What character do you play in Durgesh Nandini?
I play Durgesh Nandini- a girl who believes in certain values in life like honesty, simplicity and kindness. But she is also very contemporary in terms of her street-smart attitude. She can be brutally aggressive and yet have a soft corner for somebody who needs her help. I play an out-and-out rustic girl, with a tomboyish twist to her. In fact she closely resembles my real persona. Does being a part of a rural backdrop suit you?
I accept that most of the TV shows these days have an urban appeal, but at the same time the fact is that most of our population still reside in villages. A show like Durgesh Nandini will cater to a larger population in that sense and I am confident that with the kind of theme this show has, it will definitely go well with the audiences. After working in films, how has the television experience been?
I won't say that I am totally new to television. In the sense, I've done TV commercials for brands like Kelvinator, Rexona and Sweekar Oil. Though I agree that my forte has been films - regional cinema to be precise. I have done films like Iyyer IPS (Tamil), Dravina Chaliya (Telugu), Joy Maa Durga (Bengali), Suhaagni Banade Sajana Hamaar (Bhojpuri) and two Hindi films, Koi Hai and Wrong Number. Durgesh Nandini has close shades to some characters that I have enacted in regional films. Moreover, both films and television have similar kind of demands from an artiste. On the whole it has been a comfortable experience so far. How excited are you about the show?
I am very much thrilled about the show. I have a habit of taking up one thing at a time and concentrating on it fully. Right now my focus is on Durgesh Nandini. I feel lucky having got this kind of a role.
ASHWINI KALSEKAR
You have been playing negative characters for some time now. Are you again playing a negative character in Jeete Hain Jiske Liye?
Yes, I am used to playing a negative character since I did Jigyaasa. As far as JHJL is concerned, to the viewer, this role will look a negative character, but actually it is positive as far as my character of Adira is concerned. Please elaborate.
Adira is the buwa of Dhanrajgir (Ayub Khan) who is a businessman. Somewhere in-between Dhanrajgir dies. It is then that Adira takes over the business which she expands, so much so that she builds a mansion for the family. Later, once Adira is told by her family members that she was only the caretaker, she gets enraged. From here on she looks out for methods to destabilise the family. Any one in Adira's place would have done just that, because it is a matter of one's security. Your character has an enchanting look.
Adira is very stylised on the lines of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, but I haven't followed them. Right from my rings to the earrings, everything has been so designed to rev up my character. And what about your character?
Every grey character is always given a powerful look and has to mainly emote through the eyes. The same goes with Adira. The entry of Adira is always accompanied by an ominous background score a la Gabbar Singh in Sholay. Then there are moments when Adira screams "That's all" after which no one dares to talk. Tell us about the films you have acted in.
Besides doing serials like Shanti, CID, K3 Pali Hill, Ek Aur Mohabbat, in which I played Draupadi, and Naya Zamana, I have done films like Khakee, Musafir, Apaharan and Ankahee.I am currently doing Johny Gaddar and two films for Vikram Bhatt.

Husband-wife duo Deeya and Tony Singh have carved a niche for themselves as ace producers in TV. After the super hit Jassi Jaise Koi Nahin, Jabb Love Hua and Left Right Left are on air now. Their third venture Jeete Hai Jiske Liye has just been launched.

Excerpts from an interview:

Q From Banegi Apni Baat to Jeete Hai Jiske Liye, every serial of yours has been different. Where do you get your creative ideas from?

I pick up ideas from life itself, from the experiences I have with near and dear ones. It is sort of autobiographical in nature so the characters are almost real. This is something like a spiritual journey where you are constantly trying to find something but never know what the end will be like.

It is very difficult to come up with something new every time but it feels great when channels appreciate us and want our projects constantly.

Q But you come up with very few projects at a time unlike Balaji?

Right now we have three shows on air. Earlier, we weren't such a big production house. Now we are settled and the two kids are growing up. I know to stay in the competition, one has to be seen more and do more shows.

Q Who is your target audience?

There is no specified target audience. When Just Mohabbat came it was a story of a 10-year-old but even parents used to watch it. So our shows are for everyone.

Q Would you ever come up with serials of the K kind?

What Balaji shows is also a part of life. As for us, if we have such a concept it would be given a particular look and treatment which would be entirely ours. The story would be narrated in our own style. Like Jeete Hai Jiske Liye has the element of motherhood but the story is not told like it is done in a K serial.

Q You have a fixation with international tele novellas. First Jassi… and now Jeete… are both adaptations.

There is nothing like fixation. Yes Jeete… and Jassi… are taken from tele novellas but we have revamped them. Jeete… is totally revamped while Jassi… was changed just a little.

Q How difficult is it to indianise such tele novellas?

It is very difficult as we have to revamp it completely. Then change parts and add some characters if needed. We have to work a lot on it.

Q Despite doing good shows you still have not been getting the kind of appreciation Balaji serials get?

Yes that is true, but it is no one's fault as it is up to the industry to decide how they look upon us. Actually we have a certain pattern of working and we don't like to create a buzz or to speak about things too much. Instead we believe in showing our talent through our work.

'My kids love to see me on hoardings'

Actor Renuka Shahane does the balancing act between home and career

After a five-year break, actor Renuka Shahane is back to pursue a career which she left for her kids. Renuka now plays the character of Anjali in the recent show 'Jeete Hain Jiske Liye' (Sony). The actor gets in a conversational mood…

Break ke baad
"This break from acting was spent in taking care of my children. My kids are now aged four (Shouryaman) and two (Satyendra). The role that I was offered was interesting. Sandeep Sikcand (creative head Sony) managed to convince me about it. I made this decision because my mother could take care of the kids. My husband (actor Ashutosh Rana) also persuaded me."

'Jeete Hain Jiske Liye'
"I have been an instinctive actor. My acting depends on inputs from the writer, director and co-stars. It's a team effort. I have not played a character like Anjali before. Anjali is an orphan who has a positive attitude. Though she does get hurt easily, she covers it up. She has a wonderful relationship with her husband and children. She allows her children to do what she couldn't as a child. Anjali is not always sweet. She has difficult shades too."

Mama mia
"Shouryaman and Satyendra are very fond of Anjali and love to see me on hoardings. My elder son says that he wants to act. I have been there with them 24/7, so they don't like it when I leave for the shoots."

Then and now
"This is the first time that I am doing a daily. One has to put in long hours. The pattern of shooting has also changed. Short shots are taken after a scene whether the scene demands it or not. Also, directors are changed every new day. Earlier we worked with one director all through."

Simple me
"I have been getting offers for films but I am not interested. I am much more comfortable doing television. I have never been a glamorous person. I am in this profession because of my love for acting. My lifestyle is simple."

'Fan'fare
"During these years at home, I forgot that I am an actor. So, it's nice to know that people still love to see me on screen. I keep getting letters from fans. People come up and say that they have missed seeing me. It's good to know that I have not been forgotten."

Futurescope
"I never plan for the future and neither do I have any dreams. But someday I'd like to direct. My sons are too young to decide what they want to do. They can pursue a career of their choice. Their profession should be their passion."
