Holi fever

Holi may have come and gone but our serial wallahs aren't yet out of the festive mood. The Jeete Hai Hai Jiske Liye episode to be aired on March 7 is dedicated to the festival of colours. Renuka Shahane who was not much into Holi played the festival with fervour on the sets of the show. "I have started playing Holi with my two children and Ranaji (Asutosh Rana). But playing Holi on the sets of Jeete hai Jiske Liye has been a very good experience. We never felt like we were shooting for the episode," she smiles. Her co-star Ayub says, "We actors celebrate each festival so many times in the serials that when the actual festivals come, we are very weary of celebrations. But this time while shooting for Holi I had much fun with the gang."

Get the holistic picture?

(Posted on 9 March 2007)

Is there an unwritten rule that makes it mandatory for each soap to incorporate the festival on hand into its track? Is there a penalty in case of failure to do so? Or will ignoring a festival show that it's not in sync with the times?

Whatever the source of the paranoia, the fact was that you had to be subjected to different dimensions of Holi (only the playing with colours part, not the ritualistic bonfire) whichever channel you cared to flick to. Apart from predictable Balaji soaps like Kyunki... that must mark whichever festival happens to be round the corner, the entire Wadhwa clan played Rang Panchami in Kumkum, where the family has just been told that the maid Santo is none other than the ever loving-n-sacrificing Kumkum.

On Sony's Ek Ladki Anjaani Si, the story needed the backdrop of Holi to get some goons to beat Anuradha unconscious. The rest of the cast was drenched in colours in Nikhil's house. On Sahara One's Solhah Singarr, the Chaturvedi family is out spraying colours on each other, as Menaka and Sumer confront Shagun. Over again on Sony's Jeete Hain Jiske Liye, Renuka Shahane got to smile at the camera for a change, as she exchanged colours with screen hubby Ayub Khan.

Shaleen might enter Jeete Hain!

Shaleen Bhanaut is petrified of playing of negative roles. Yet, we continue to see him as Karan, the wife-beater in Zee's Saat Phere, and Agni in Sony's Kulvaddhu.

And now the buzz goes that Shaleen has been offered a role in Jeeta Hai n Jiske Liye.

Confirming the news, the actor says, "Yes, I have been offered a role in Jeete Hain? but I am not exactly aware of the character." This is because Shaleen is hard put for time, as he reveals, "Now that Kulvaddhu is winding up, we have been shooting round the clock for it. I was to meet the producers, Tony and Deeya Singh, today, but I got a call from Maverick to report for shooting. So, I am busy with that for now."

In Kulvaddhu, he is essaying the part of Agni, who limps like Sanjay Dutt in Saajan but has negative shades to it. One thing that Shaleen is clear about is, "The role in any other serial that I take up should be as good as if not better than Agni. In fact I would like to do something bigger and interesting and difficult as Agni." As Agni, though he had less dialogues to deliver, he displayed emotions through his facial expressions, which received a lot of appreciation from the audience."

Another interesting fact that Shaleen revealed to us is that he's a businessman cum actor. He is into importing printing machineries and also has a family business of publishing.

Well, way to go!

'We broke up on a good note'

Pooja Ghai on parting ways with husband Neeraj Rawal and being a single parent to son Raaj

'Jeete Hai Jiske Liye'
Talking about her experience of playing Avni in 'Jeete Hai Jiske Liye' (Sony) Pooja Ghai says, "The experience is beautiful. I have worked with producers Deeya and Tony Singh in quite a few projects and it has always been comfortable working with them." She goes on to say, "It is complete madness on the sets. It is absolutely fun. I am close to everybody. I get along well with everyone especially Renuka Shane."

Marriage and motherhood
For someone who has done it all-modelling, acting, marriage and motherhood Pooja says, "Motherhood has definitely been the most challenging phase for me. I have enjoyed it the most too."

Pooja speaks about life after parting ways with her husband Neeraj Rawal, "Yes, I am not with my husband any longer. We have parted." This would mean all the more responsibility towards her son Raaj who is barely six-years-old. "I manage to take out time for Raaj. We read books together, play video games. I also take him out shopping," says the young mother.

Raaj and me
Ask her how Raaj has taken her break up and she says on a serious note, "He is smart enough and does not crib about it. I have a healthy relationship with my son. Anyway, he is too young now to discuss our parting with." She goes on to say how she has managed to get through this difficult phase, "I am a mature girl and my decision was mature too. We broke up on a good note and are still good friends."

"My son loves to see me acting. But he hates to see some other child call me mummy. I had done this commercial where the kid called me 'Mummy'. Raaj would start hitting the television when he saw that commercial." However, she doesn't wish for Raaj to enter the field of acting.

White Leaf
The only thing on her mind other than acting and her son is her production house called White Leaf that she owns along with her partner and actor Vikas Kalantri. "I have a great partner. So he manages it well even though I am not able to take out much time due to my acting schedules," she says referring to Vikas.

She admits that in spite having done so many characters people still recognise her as Suhasi of 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' (Star Plus).

Jeete Hain Jiske Liye may not be doing well but Ashwini Kalsekar doesn't believe in TRP numbers. "I don't give any weightage to TRPs and GRPs but go by the audience's response. The show is being appreciated and I have got good response for my character," says the fiery and blunt actress who feels her look and costumes have gone down well with viewers. "I don't think Adira is outright negative. It's a grey character and definitely different from antagonists of other shows." Ashwini dismisses the talk that she is eager to work in CID, the crime thriller that she did for over four years and finally quit to do some different work.

"I wanted change and at that time I was also doing films like Khakhi, Mussafir and Kisna which required me to shoot at outdoor locations. There are only 30 days in a month and right now I am fully committed to Jeete Hain," says the grey-eyed actress who wouldn't mind a second innings with CID if time permits. "Fireworks is like my second home. I have no issues with them. In fact, whenever I am free I make it a point to visit Fireworks to meet B.P. (Singh) and Pradeep (Uppar). They are friends and the day I feel I am in a position to do CID I will join the show. But as of now my return to CID is not certain."

Q Is your role of the 'other woman' in Jeete Hain Jiske Liye a cameo?
Yes, it is. The character was planned right at the beginning but her entry happened only about ten episodes ago.

Q What's the reason behind Avni trying to seduce Aman though she is married to his younger brother Ashmit?
Avni had an affair with Aman and wanted to marry him. But he married Anjali. On a rebound she married Ashmit so that at some point of time she can rekindle the old flame. Now she is trying to win over Aman again and come close to him. Of course, since it's a TV serial actual seduction can't be shown clearly. but she will try her best to have a relationship with him. However, no matter how beautifully this relationship develops it can't succeed because he is already married to Anjali.

Q In Viraasat why does your character hover between negative and positive shades?
In Viraasat all the characters are either positive or negative whereas Anushka, which is played by me is the only character which has shades of grey. She is against her husband Rishab Lamba (Aman Verma) because he has abused her physically and mentally. Since Anushka was in love with the Kharbanda family's son, Rishab finds it hard to accept her as his wife.

Q After being shifted to Star One the TRPs of Viraasat have come down heavily. Do low TRPs make a difference to an actor?
Yes, they do. You feel disappointed because your work is not reaching the maximum audience. Though loyal viewers of the show are still watching it, low TRPs do make you feel sad.

Q You played Daksha's daughter Suhasi in Kyunki. With Ketki Dave's return as Daksha Ben in the show will you also be back as Suhasi?
I really don't know. I played Suhasi long ago and after that two generation leaps have taken place. All the characters have grown in age and become grandmothers and grandfathers.

Q And you don't want to play a grandmother…
It's the producer's call all the way. I don't know when and how Suhasi will be back, if at all they plan to get her back.

Q You have fond memories of doing Siddhant. Why is the show still dear to you?
It was a beautiful show, quite popular and did very well. I loved it because of the way it was shot and the way the story and characters moved.

Q You have started your production banner. What kind of shows are you planning to make?
White Leaf Entertainment is a production as well as event management company. We did a Sansui product launch some time ago and our next event is the hunt for a new face to play the lead in Nayee Padosan 2 by way of contests and auditions. We are conducting auditions in major cities and soon the film's lead actress would be announced. As for television production I have pitched in a few scripts and ZeeNext has accepted our proposal for an international travel show called Festivals of the World.

Q Are you looking at anchoring it?
No, I will look after the production since this is my first show as producer. I will take care of all the creative aspects of the show.

Q There is lot of speculation about your relationship with Vikaas Kalantari who is your partner in White Leaf Entertainment.
He is just very good friend. With some friends you tend to be hyper but that does not mean there is anything more to it .

As Gudi as it gets!
By: Tushar Joshi
March 20, 2007
Riteish Deshmukh

Every year, we celebrate Gudi Padwa by enjoying a sumptuous lunch at home.

The spread consists of traditional Maharashtrian delicacies like puran poli. Unfortunately, I couldn't eat lunch at home yesterday as I was shooting for Indra Kumar's Dhamaal.

Why the celebration?

Gudi Padwa means the start of the new year for farmers. Since we come from the farming community of Latur, this festival means a lot to us.

For the farmers, it means the settling of old accounts and the beginning of new ones. In Latur, we celebrate Gudi Padwa in a big way.

Rakhi Sawant

I am down with viral fever and not feeling well, so I am not celebrating the festival this year.

However, my mother is making some sweets and they will be a pooja in my house.

Why the celebration?

Gudi Padwa signifies the beginning of the new year for Maharashtrians.
Keerti Kelkar

This year, my mother-in-law did the puja as I had an early morning shoot.

But I did manage to get some sweets! In the evening, we went to the temple.

Why the celebration?

For Maharashtrians, Gudi Padwa signifies the first day of the Hindu calendar.
Sai Deodhar

I am in Delhi, so I cannot celebrate the festival. Last year, I enjoyed erecting the gudi and doing the puja with my family.

Why the celebration?

Gudi Padwa marks the first day of the Maharashtrian calendar.

Also, it has something to do with farmers and the harvesting season. That is the reason why wheat grain is tied around the gudi.
Ishaa Koppikar

Our Gudi Padwa starts with my grandmother making a bitter paste from neem leaves that we eat before beginning any work. Eating something sweet follows this.

Why the celebration?

Gudi Padwa is a victory celebration.

It is celebrated for Ramji's successful return to Ayodhya after killing Ravana. Gudi means victory and Padwa means new year.

Ashwini Kalsekar

This is the first Gudi Padwa when my parents are not with me. They are presently in London, so I am celebrating it at home by myself.

Every year, we do a traditional puja where we bathe the gods, wear new clothes and erect the Gudi.

This year, however, I haven't been able to enjoy the traditional faral (sweets), since I am unwell.

Why the celebration?

After Holi, Gudi Padwa is a period that signifies a new beginning.
Gauri Pradhan

I celebrate Gudi Padwa every year. This year, I will do the traditional puja and cook some good Maharashtrian food before leaving for my
shoot.

Why the celebration?

Gudi Padwa is the first day of the new year according to the Hindu calendar, and also Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana on this day.
Anusha Dandekar

I don't celebrate Gudi Padwa.
Narayani Shastri

I had no idea it's Gudi Padwa. What's it about?

What's Gudi Padwa

Gudi Padwa is considered a very auspicious day. There are many legends behind the celebration of Gudi Padwa.

It is said that the universe was created by Brahma on this day and Satyug began.

It is also believed that on this day, King Vali was killed by Rama who then returned to Ayodhya victorious. Gudi Padwa is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month.
