'Being Jassi got claustrophobic'

Mona Singh relives her highs and lows as 'Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin' draws to a close and feels elated about its tremendous response in a chat with After Hours

You have won the ITA (Indian Television Awards) for two consecutive years. How does it feel?

Last year I was delighted to win my first award as an actor. But I was sad that I had to receive the award as Jassi and not as Mona Singh. I wanted the world to recognize that it was Mona who had successfully created Jassi and made her so believable and endearing. People were also expecting to see the real person behind Jassi but that did not happen. Nevertheless the thrill and exhilaration of being super successful made up for that. This year I was very happy to appear as myself and make my parents feel proud of me.

Don't you miss the old Jassi with braces and glasses?

I don't miss her. I feel relieved for finally being able to appear as myself. In the initial days as Jassi, it felt great. I thought of myself as a super person, who made the entire country crazy about her. But after a while it started getting claustrophobic; living somebody else's life, day in and day out. Anyone else would have simply gone mad.
Nobody else has gone through such an experience in India. I had to constantly be someone I was not.

But didn't it give you so much adulation?

As a character Jassi was a dream debut. The kind of love and adulation that Jassi got was unthinkable. But personally it was suffocating for Mona.

So you missed out doing normal things during that period?

You bet I did! I could not go out to eat at a restaurant or see a film or step out on the street. The schedules were so hectic that I hardly got time for anything else. I could only go for a late night show. But then, all through, I had to keep my mouth shut since my voice is a total give away. I sneaked out to visit close friends and was careful about even stepping into a lift.

How did you cope with the media?

The media went berserk and tried to hound me like the paparazzi. Photographers used to wait in alleys just to click me sans my Jassi get up.

Now that Jassi is being pushed off its original slot, do you feel sad?

Not really! We had a good innings for two years and it's high time for a new vibrant show to occupy prime time space. I have got an indication that Jassi will wind up soon. In fact, the original show whose format we were inspired by, ended immediately after the makeover, where the girl gets married to her boss.

How do you feel when you see so many Jassi-inspired soaps?

It feels great that the show has generated such a response and that producers are moving away from saas-bahu soaps and showing women in a more positive light. It reinforces the belief that you don't necessarily have to be glamorous to be successful or sought after.

Parmeet Sethi Actor on his career after Jassi.. .

'I don't want to run after films if I've good telly offers'

One hasn't been seeing much of you after your role as Raj in Jassi...

When I entered the show I knew that the character of Raj will do well. But then it got lost and I had to move on.

But I must say that it was a wonderful character. I did take a short break after that, but very soon I will be seen in more projects on TV.

What are the projects you are doing?
...
I'm not at liberty to talk about the project. But one thing for sure is that the project is big. I'm playing a criminal in it and have already started shooting for the show.

Till then, the viewers can watch me in Nach Baliye. Don't you want to return back to films?

I am doing BR Chopra's Babul and a few other films. But when I have been accepted with open arms on television, why should I run after films?

But as far as direction is concerned, I have three scripts ready. It's a just a matter of time before I decide to choose one.
It's surprising to know that you love dancing so much...

I always loved dancing and till date I have just done three songs in my entire film career. My first song was from DDLJ. I was made to sit down and the same happened with Kacche Dhaage.

Only in Diljale, I was allowed to move around a bit.

But even I'm surprised at myself. I have actually started thinking of dancing on stage in public. But my aim now is to make Saroj Khan give me not Rs 101, but Rs 1,001.

Armaan, Kusum chucked out

…not out of their shows but Nach Baliye

Apoorva Agnihotri and wife Shilpa Saklani might have had a ball dancing at their wedding about a year ago. But their performance last week in the wedding special episode didn't really please the junta who voted them out.

It came as a bit of a shock to the actors and the makers of the show because the couple had managed to keep their scores high. As a matter of fact, even the judges thought that they were a promising jodi. Sadly the audience didn't seem to think so.

Mona said she loves Jassi's character. ''I will love to hear being called Jassi even after 50 years. Jassi broke the norms of the saas bahu serials.'' But she could not answer why the viewership of the serial decreased after her makeover.

Mona told her fans that she modelled for two years before TV happened. ''Now, I work for more than 15 hours, and sleep for only about five hours. I manage to remain fresh by doing breathing exercises.''

Off-screen nobodies!

Shaikh Ayaz
Friday, November 25, 2005 18:44 IST

When Amarr Upadhyay was shown as dead in the popular series 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' four years ago, it created a furore - prominently because the couch potatoes were too much in love with their favourite on-screen character. They wanted him alive!

Circa 2005 and surprisingly, Ronit Roy essays Mihir Virani in the same show, with as much fame. Even more astonishing is that today there are no takers for Upadhyay, proving once again that it is the characters that make celebrities rather than vice-versa.

Agrees Nivedita Basu, deputy creative director, Balaji Telefilms, "The idea of a daily soap is to permeate into the psyche of the viewers and that's why you see characters becoming celebrities more so often."

She cites the obvious example of Mona Singh (of 'Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin' fame). "Clearly, they remember the face, not the name," she says.

This phenomenon isn't new - the epic 'Mahabharat' and 'Ramayan' in the late '80s yielded many such celebrity characters. Most of them gained God-like status. But equally proven is the fact that these actors rarely emerged out of their characters with an identity of their own.

Puneet Issar, better known all his life as Duryodhana from 'Mahabharat', offers an interesting perspective. "It is very easy to get typecast in one image. The only way out of being trapped in a particular image is to keep doing other things simultaneously. Like, I was also doing films around the time 'Mahabharat' was at its peak, which really helped."

Arun Govil from 'Ramayan' feels that television today has a short memory span. "People remembered me as Lord Ram because 'Ramayan' was an epic. More so, it was about Indian culture and a part of our religion. Modern-day television characters are vanished in a year's time. There is no substance and no recall value. Though many serials of the late '80s and early '90s are forgotten, 'Ramayan' is still watched. Ram and Sita will continue to live on - these new guys will not."

apurva wins the best actor and mona gets the best actress for sangini ita awards

The recepient of the final award was the most surprised when his name was announced as the winner of the Best Actor of the year award.
Apurva Agnihotri had finished a gruelling day's shoot at the Jassi... sets and reached the Indian Telly Awards venue, least expecting that his nomination would win him an award, that too at the hands of wife Shilpa Saklani!

Before that, Mona Singh walked away with the honour of being the best actor (female) of the year. Mona, looking smashing in a denims and blazer ensemble, looked radiant as she accepted the award from co artiste Karan Oberoi.

Among the TV critics awards, the award for best actor (male) went to Pawan Shankar for his restrained performance in Siddhanth, and the award for best actor (female) went to Juhi Parmar for Kumkum-Pyara Sa Bandhan.

Komolika Guha Thakurta, Maninee Mihir Mishra and Rakshanda Khan caught our eye with their dazzling smiles at the Indian Telly awards yesterday. Pics: Sujeet Jaiswal
Sony's Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin ruled the Indian Telly Awards night at Chitrakut ground, Andheri.

Not only did the show pick up the best daily serial award, its lead actors Mona Singh (Jassi) and Apurva Agnihotri (Armaan) got the awards for the best actors in the popular category.

Rakshanda Khan also joined her teammates in the winning list by picking up the best negative role (female) — as Mallika in a tie with Urvashi Dholakia as Komolika (in Kasautii Zindagi Kay).

Dancing divas

Among performances, it was an anticlimax as the much hyped and talked about Rajeev Khandelwal-Aamna Shariff item number proved to be a thanda affair. On the other hand, Eijaz Khan and Shama Sikander brought the house down with their energetic medley of today's hottest songs.

The award show, which will be telecast on Sony, played the fair card by awarding its rival Star Plus the best entertainment channel trophy.

Star snub?

However, not a single member from Star was available at the venue to pick up the award. The category that made heads turn was Manish Goswami's Sarrkar that took home the prize for the best ensemble.

Not many expected the show to win anything last night. Will this prove to be an attempt to revive the drama that was talked about being pushed to the afternoon slot by the channel?

Suit-ably dressed:
Gaurav Gera and Mona Singh
Drawing the line

Unlike the last television award show, the Telly awards had a demarcated seating arrangement, which unfortunately kept the popular actors quite far away from their fans and the audience.

Queen bee Ekta Kapoor was spotted cheering and giggling with her close friend Mushtaq who went on stage to collect the award on behalf of Anita (former Natassha) of Kavyanjali fame for the best on screen couple along with Eijaz Khan.

Spouse's Day out

The final segment of popular awards wasn't much of a shocker when Shilpa Saklani and Karan Oberoi graced the stage to announce the winners for the best actor and actress.

Karan couldn't stop gushing about his co-star Mona Singh winning the award (the two are supposed to be dating each other). When Shilpa opened the envelope to announce the actor, it was already decided that if Karan gave Mona the award, then she would also hand it over to the love of her life.

Shilpa let her screeching and screaming express who the winner was. Husband Apurva Agnihotri seemed more in control, and like everyone else, he thanked the mentors of his show.

Overall the show wasn't a washout, but neither was it WOW.

WINNERS

Best actor popular: Apurva Agnihotri for Jassi
Best actress: Mona Singh for Jassi
Best daily: Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi

Jassi, Karan sizzle in Goa
By: Tushar Joshi
November 29, 2005

HAPPY TOGETHER:
Mona Singh and Karan Oberoi

Mona Singh has two reasons to be on Cloud Nine. Not only did the actress win the Indian Telly Award for the Best Popular Actress on Sunday, but also got to spend quality time with co-star and close friend, Karan Oberoi, during a recent schedule in Goa.

Karan wasn't needed

In the second week of November, the Jassi cast flew to Goa for a shooting schedule. Actress Shilpa Saklani (who is not part of the show) accompanied husband Apoorva Agnihotri on the outdoor; however, it was Karan's presence in Goa that created a flutter. Even though Karan (who plays Raghu in Jassi) was not needed for that schedule, he arrived in Goa as if it was the most natural thing to do.

Full-on entertainment

A unit member revealed that it was understood that Karan was there to give "special friend" Mona, company. "Both Karan and Mona have been quite open about their special friendship relationship in the last few weeks. In fact, it was quite a sight to see the two cuddle up and hang out together. Since Karan wasn't required for this shoot, he was free, and made sure he kept Mona entertained."

The unit landed in Goa in the second week of November, for a five-day jaunt. "Karan was required to shoot a few scenes in Mumbai as well. I remember him spending the first two to three days with Mona in Goa, after which he returned to the city."

Hotel move

Another source revealed that the actor wasn't keen on hanging out with the entire unit, and wanted to spend time in private with Mona. "He kept asking her to move into a different hotel; they did change locations for a day." This didn't go well with the production house, which wanted all the actors under one roof.

But an actor from the show said, "Karan was staying at the same hotel with us; he, too, is part of the show, and we are one big family. We didn't expect him to check into a separate hotel. But as soon the day's pack-up was announced, Mona and he would disappear from the group and hang out on their own."

Susegaad!

The couple took advantage of their Goa sojourn by taking leisurely walks on the beach at night, shopping and sampling the local cuisine. "It was evident that Mona wanted only Karan by her side," says the actor. "She was always in a better mood when he was around. In fact, when he left, she whined about how much she missed him."

Feelings on show

Surprisingly, when we contacted, Karan, the actor went into denial about his Goa trip, "I never went to Goa for any schedule," he said. "I was busy shooting in Mumbai." Confides a friend close to the actor, "He was thrilled to bits when he gave Mona the award on Sunday. It was hard for him to hide his feelings that night."

Mona Singh was unavailable for comment.
