Is Sooraj Thapar the new Maddy in Jassi…?

If anyone has been missing the effeminate Maddy on Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, it's time to rejoice. This week, Sooraj Thapar (in a complete unrecognizable avatar - spiked blond hair, bleached cheeks et al) made his appearance as another fashion designer Charles. Thapar plays a high flying designer who steps into Jassi's new fashion house Karishma and offers to help her out.
Says Deeya Singh, the producer of the show, "Charles is now a part of Jassi's new fashion house, Karishma. He basically didn't get a chance to prove himself with Gulmohar so Jassi gives him an opportunity."
We have to be pardoned if Charles reminds you of Rajesh Khera who played the typical designer Maddy for Gulmohar. If Charles is in, what about Maddy? "I have no clue as to what is happening, I don't know anything," says Rajesh who is currently in London.

Batting, batty, battling
SHAILAJA BAJPAI
Posted online: Monday, October 31, 2005 at 0005 hours IST

It's off with the spaghetti straps and on with the shirts and jackets - although why they can't be casual and wear T-shirts, we'll never understand. This lady means business. We don't mean Mandira Bedi, who looks lovely with or without whatever she wears, but Anjum Chopra. Anjum who? Anjum Chopra, former captain of the Indian cricket team, of course. Women's team, in case you're getting awfully confused. Anjum has replaced those dainty wall flower girls as the Fourth Umpire on Doordarshan's cricket show.

Congratulations and celebrations, DD, for being bold enough to forsake girls who knew how to bat beautifully with their eyelashes for a woman who knows what it is to bat out in the middle. Not that Anjum is uneasy on the eye; on the contrary, she's very pleasing. However, the reason she's seated next to Charu Sharma is because she possesses a cricketing brain.

That's not always enough. Last Friday, to a man, DD's expert panel disagreed with Dravid's decision to bowl first after he won the toss. It was left to Arun Lal, the only one to get a feel of the pitch, to agree with the Indian captain and, as it turned out, they were right. Moral of the story? Don't always believe what you hear.

On the other hand, we would like to see what we are there to see, if you see what we mean. We are there to watch cricket not Jassi or Aamir Khan drinking a Coke "sar uthaake" - with their heads held high. When it's them we want we'll tune into J Jaisi Koi Nahin (a big mistake these days) or one of the movie channels. We want to watch the wickets fall, the runs scored. Is that asking for too much? Apparently. None of the sports channels time their commercial breaks accurately so DD Sports was still snacking on a break when Irfan took Dilshan's wicket. Do you mind? Star News doesn't mind being impolite to likely losers. On Wednesday, after its exit poll on the second round of voting in Bihar indicated thumbs firmly down for Ram Vilas Paswan, the evening anchor went for politician's jugular. Congratulations, you have ruined Laloo's game... you like to play spoiler... you are the dal in the salt (!?)... Some of the rudeness may be lost in translation but say it in a very aggressive, belligerent tone and even "namak" sounds abusive. It's like the news channel is passing judgment on Paswan; no need when the people will pronounce his verdict. NDTV 24X7 interviewed Paswan the same night. While Prannoy Roy also pointed out that the minister was playing spoilsport, he did so in a (polite) manner like he was asking Paswan to please pass him the salt! Onto sweeter subjects, then, and what else but the season of mithai, Diwali. All the news channels are binging on Diwali specials on shopping, crackers and just how many ladoos one company can make (thousands). Aaj Tak had a bizarre take on the festival: it visited a beauty parlour to find out what women want. What some women want is to become "fair" for the festival of lights (just in case it shines too brightly in their faces?). Others want a facelift - we had to watch a woman having Jello scraped off her face. Thanks very much, Aaj Tak. Clearly, the aforementioned women do not want to look like Saloni, the heroine of the latest serial on Zee - Saat Phere. The actress may actually have a complexion that resembles hot chocolate or else the producers have darkened her skin so that she looks the part of a young girl who is discriminated against because, you got it, of the colour of her skin. She will face many trials and tribulations - the going rate for marrying a dark girl is apparently Rs 25 lakh or some such nonsense.

The serial is a serious attempt to criticise Indian social norms but it would be helpful if there were a few shades thrown in so that we don't see everybody in terms of black and white. No, not skin colour, but we want characters who are neither one or the other but shades of both.

Rajan Sahi with Mona Singh

decided to bid goodbye to the show. He will now direct the Sunjoy Wadhwa show on Zee, Saat Phere.

Rajan, who directs Miilee on Star Plus, will be directing the Zee show from this week. "Well, lt was decided at the ouset that I would do a certain phase of Jassi...and then take over Tony-Deeya's next show on Zee," says Rajan, who is very impressed with Rajshree Thakur, the actress who plays Saloni in
Saat Phere.

"Deeya was really angry with me for not doing her next show, but I have assured her I would join it midway. As far as Saat...is concerned, I liked the concept and aspirational shows have always done well on Indian television!" says Rajan.

MAHAA MELA
Sony TVs 10th Anniversary Bash can definitely be titled as the mother-of-all-parties thrown this season... The lobby of the Grand Hyatt, Mumbai, twinkled, twinkled with little stars and big stars from advertising and varied media. Shabana Azmi dressed in all black looked glorious and young as ever, while hubby Javed Akhtar looked regal in his trademark kurta-pyjama. Mr. Mohabbatein lutaunga, Indian Idol Abhijeet Sawant was there too going red in the face denying news of his engagement to a neighbourhood sweetheart. Mandira Bedi was there too, in a white sequined sari and silver bikini top! Sony big-wigs were all there; Kunal Dasgupta played perfect host while Tarun Katial walked hand-in-hand with a mysterious lady in black. Jassi aka Mona Singh was there with "friend" Karan Oberoi. Rohit and Mansi Roy, Rajiv and Delnaaz Paul made it a point to attend.

Bakhtyar Irani with his strange hairdo came all dressed up in a suit. Most stars turned up post midnight with Javed Jaffery and Negaar Z. Khan strolling in at around 1 am. Aatish Kapadia, Jamnadas Majethia and Deven Bhojani also arrived very late. The entire Kkusum gang was conspicuous by its absence, including Madame Butterfly Ekta Kapoor. Juhi Parmar made a brief appearance. Narayani Shastri walked in sans Gaurav Chopra who is out of India but she seemed well attended to by Anuj Saxena. Others at the do included Niki Aneja and hubby Sunny, Sonu Nigam, Gaurav Gera, the three musketeers Sachin Sharma, Rohit Bakshi and Sumit Sachdev, Maninee and Mihir Mishra, Sai (in a micro-mini skirt) with Shakti Anand, and Parmeet Sethi with wife Archana Puran Singh. Yash Chopra, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Randhir Kapoor appeared a bit lost in telly-land but stuck around for a while! Last but not the least, spotted having a blast were Chetan Hasraj, Divya Dutta, Pankaj Udhas, Vikas Bhalla, Sameer Soni, Shweta Salve with Rodney, Anu Malik, Tina Parakh, Nikhil Alva, Deeya Singh, and Yash Tonk! Waakai... Iss party jaissi koi nahin!

Host seat turns hot

He may be the defending champion but his daughter doesn't give him a chance. Why? He is up against Amitabh Bachchan this year.

Derek O'Brien (picture below) has been nominated in the Best Host category in the ITA (Indian Television Academy) Awards this year but to win the trophy, like he did last year for Bournvita Quiz Contest, Derek has to beat the Kaun Banega Crorepati host.

"I think it's an honour enough to be nominated alongside the big man. Come on, your name is being taken with God! I am more thrilled than last year although I know my chances are zero," Derek tells Metro.

The ITA Awards, to be shown this Saturday on STAR Plus, has Shekhar Suman (He Man) and Annu Kapoor and Pallavi Joshi (Antakshari) also vying for the Best Host honour.

A total of 46 channels will be taking part in the awards this year and there are more than 50 categories. Mona Singh is the favourite to win the Best Actress award in the drama category for Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, while Shivaji Satam is expected to bag the Best Actor trophy for CID.

Will Kituu take on Jassi?

Sudipto Chattopadhyay
Monday, November 07, 2005 20:14 IST

Scheduled to start from 14th November on the 9.30 pm slot, 'Kituu Sabb Jaantii Hai' is Sahara One's latest entertainment promise. It is the story of a prodigious girl Kituu, played by actor Ami Trivedi. Sony's 'Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin', a tale of an ordinary girl's extraordinary life-script, could well face competition with this account of a girl with intellectual prowess.

The channel however, wishes to remain tight lipped at the moment about the new soap. It is learnt that Sanjay Jumaani, the official soothsayer of the channel, has advised them to keep everything under wraps till the auspicious day of the press conference. The extra alphabets to the title have been added to ensure it becomes a fool proof hit, said an insider.

The cast includes actors Naresh Suri, Shama Deshpande and Amit Verma. The show is being presented by Siddhant Cinevision and is produced by the veteran Manish Goswami. On being asked whether this is going to be yet another Plain Jane show, producer Manish Goswami differs.

He says, "The USP of this soap is the backdrop and the unique character of its protagonist. Kituu is the story of prodigious girl who is far more intelligent than her age. Well that certainly seems like a take off on Roald Dahl's 'Matilda'. Wait and watch!

'Yet another walkout from 'Jassi...'

Close on the heels of episode director Rakesh Sarang's quitting the soap, comes yet another peeved exit from 'Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin'. Last week creative director and screenplay writer of the show, Kamlesh Kunti Singh, staged a walkout. Singh was upset with interference from the channel.

He blamed the channel for not letting the creative team have any freedom in developing the storyline. "All they are interested in is pushing in endorsements at the drop of a hat. Consequently, the story is bound to go for a toss," he blasts.

Nevertheless, most of those who have disembarked from the 'Jassi...' boat seem to hold grudges against the producers Deeya and Tony Singh. There have been repeated reports of non-payments to artists and technicians. Actors Parmeet Sethi and Sameer Soni, livid with the high handed treatment meted out to them, have gone on record to express this. Singh however, does not hold any grudges against the producers. In fact, he is writing for them for a different channel.

The channel has chosen to distance itself from the controversy saying that it was purely a production house issue and they do not wish to be dragged into a debate concerning an individual

Behind the scenes at TV awards
By: Shaheen Parkar and Tushar Joshi

PHONE YA MIKE, JEETUJI?
(L-R) Asha Parekh, Aroona Irani, Jeetendra, Reena Roy and Maushami Chatterjee

It was a big night for small screen stars. The annual Hero Honda Indian Television awards on Monday had the who's who of tellyland as well as a sprinkling of Bollywood.

There was the usual nach-gana routine and thanksgiving speeches — there was also attitude, slip-ups and over-the-top histrionics. Star Plus will telecast the awards ceremony on November 12, at 6 pm. Here's what you may not see in the televised event….

Jeetu's faux pas

Actor Jeetendra got carried away by his yesteryear leading ladies (Reena Roy, Asha Parekh, Moushami Chatterjee and Aroona Irani), and said, "Now I hand over the phone to them," when actually it was the mike. Wifey Shobha Kapoor was spotted with an alarmed expression. "Phone," she muttered to herself.

GIRI, GIRI, GONE! Rohit Roy, Shweta Tiwari and Ronit Roy
Shweta gir padi

The Roy brothers — Ronit and Rohit — along with Shweta Tiwari danced to Kajra Re. But the talking point of the night turned out to be Shweta's unrehearsed fall in the middle of the song.

She slipped and fell flat on the ground. Ronit leaped to her rescue, lifting her up — making it look part of the show.

However, despite the pain Shweta managed to salvage the song, forgetting all about the fall. And in the finale, Ronit even lifted her in her arms.

HitList says: Elder bro Ronit grooves better that Rohit.

Angad gets a call

When Mohammed Iqbal Khan's name was announced for the Achiever award, he walked towards the stage alright — but continued talking on the phone right till he stepped onto it. Wonder who was talking to? And was it so urgent? Tch, tch, that was in real bad taste and disrespectful.

Kumud has lost it!

We mean excess weight. After a long hiatus, we spotted a slimmer Aashka Goradia at the event. We heard Rohit Roy yell out, "Aashu, this way." For the uninitiated, Rohit's wife, Manasi, and Aashka are good buddies.

Sameer bana angrez

Anchor Sameer Soni got many names wrong while calling our the nominees. So, Chaitanya Chaudhary became Chechanya Chaudhary!
Jassi makers Tony and Deeya Singh and their kids could not find a place to sit. So they stood in a corner till someone vacated their seats. When Mona Singh won an award, they could at least cheer in peace.

Armaan loses starry hopes on JJKN

Abrity Basu

Mumbai, November 15

Armaan Sir is not feeling too happy. And you cannot really blame him considering the way Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin has turned out. "It's really sad to see what the serial has become. The fresh theme with which we had started is just not there anymore. The entire track has gone for a toss," says Apurva Agnihotri, the actor behind Armaan's character.

The track is not the only thing that bothers Apurva. "Armaan was such an attractive and interesting character. Now he's just a moping and pining Romeo," he says. They were not even informed in advance that Jassi and Armaan wouldn't get married after all. "It came as a shock.

After all that hoopla and a special episode being planned on the wedding, it didn't happen. We weren't told about the change till the last minute," says Apurva.

Would the falling TRPs have shown a respectable rise if the marriage had taken place? "If the marriage had taken place, the serial would have ended. That would have been the perfect time to bring the curtains down on this show. People would have been left with happy memories of Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin.

Unfortunately, now the storyline is simply dragging endlessly," Apurva quickly replies. With so much to complain about, why is Apurva still sticking on with the show? "I am a very obedient and committed person," he laughs.
"Leaving a show is easier said than done.

Also, we cannot complain too much as we are contract-bound and they are paying us at the end of the day. Ultimately, what is a simple serial for the viewers is actually our profession. You cannot quit just because your job isn't going according to plan. Therefore, as long as they are paying me and there is security, I see no reason to quit," says the actor.

Apurva says he is not the only one unhappy about his role in a daily soap. "This is bound to happen. There is no break for the team to come back with fresh creative ideas. If something goes on for too long, it will surely drag and will get to the people involved. There is no point blaming the makers only. It's the system that is wrong," he says. What would be the actor's solution? "The best thing is to adopt the system used abroad.

ApurvaOne should make a serial in seasons," he says. Apurva is busy writing a script for a film for which he hopes to find producers soon. "Direction is a creative process and I would love to try my hand at it," he says.

Amarr 'not interested' in Kyunki...

Subhash K Jha | November 15, 2005 16:16 IST

When Mihir Virani -- scion of the Virani empire in the superhit television soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi -- died in a car crash, India wept.

To this day, Amarr Upadhyay -- Mihir for his countless Kyunki fans -- can't believe he was at the centre of such adulation.

"But now Mihir is behind me. I can never go back to playing that character. It was an essential part of my growth as a human being and an actor," says Upadhyay.

Amarr seems more flabbergasted than furious by rumours that he has been angling for a place in the soap that made him a household name.

"I don't know where all this talk of my return to Kyunki... originated. If I had any desire to return, why would I have left the serial in the first place?" he asks.

"I've heard that I'm keen to return, if not as my original character then as Mihir's grandson named Mayank. Who on earth is Mayank? And where did that come from? When I read myself saying I want to play this character, I asked my wife [who follows the serial religiously] who Mayank was. I've never heard that name, so how could I say I'm going to play that character?"

"I think some of our journalists should take to writing serials. Their imagination is more fertile than the soap writers".

"Let me state once and for all that after I left I never wished to be back in Kyunki... That remains unchanged. I'm happy to be back with Ekta Kapoor's Balajee Telefilms to do two serials Kkusum and Kasauti Zindagi Kay. I'm in negotiation with another major production house for a daily soap," he informs.

In-between his efforts to make a movie career and to re-establish himself on television, Amarr did Sahara's daily Saathiya, which failed to take off, lending credence to the belief that TV stars do not get a second chance.

Didn't Parmeet Sethi, Mihir Mishra, Sudhanshu Pande and Shekhar Suman ruin their promising careers on telly in pursuit of a larger canvas?

Amarr's vehement denial of the role that made him so popular replicates the indignant responses of Aneeta Kanwar and Priya Tendulkar. Tyepcast in viewers' minds as Lajjoji in Buniyaad and Rajani in the serial Rajani, the actresses made vain efforts to consolidate their positions on the big screen.

Parmeet Sethi gave up a thriving career on television to pant after Twinkle Khanna in a walk-on role in Mela. Today he is reduced to playing second fiddle to Apoorva Agnihotri in Jassi Jaisi…Koi Nahin.

For now, Amarr Upadhyay too has to be content playing less than the main lead. Will he be second-time lucky?

"I should hope so. It isn't as though I've abandoned my career plans in movies. I just chose wrongly," he says.

He also denies that he acted pricey with movie producers. "I don't know who spread these rumours about me throwing attitude and asking for astronomical sums of money. It was the other way around. Some of my movie producers failed to pay up after agreeing to a certain price."
