Out of the Closet

Stars never repeat their clothes. Aditi Jaykar Kane finds out what they do with their once-worn designer ensembles

MALAIKA ARORA

For one, it's not that I don't repeat my outfits at all.😛 I'm good at the art of mixing and matching, which is what I do most often. Combine a top with a different skirt and a different belt, and the whole outfit will look different. Only if it's a designer gown, you can't really repeat it. Yes, it is sometimes a big pain and a huge expense. Luckily, my sister and I exchange clothes all the time, although she dives into my closet more than I do as her style is funky, while mine is quirky.

I clear out my cupboard regularly and pass on a lot of clothes to the church. It's something we've been doing since childhood. Otherwise, I have plenty of cousins who love using my clothes. I'd love it if the Salvation Army concept came to India; I buy things all the time from secondhand stores when I'm abroad and some of London's best stores are secondhand stores. I've got amazing boots and cargo pants from these stores.

PREETI JHANGIANI

This is one of our biggest job hazards! Once I wear a sari to an award function, I keep it and wear it after a very long time again, either to a family function, a wedding or to a non-televised event. Otherwise I just stockpile my clothes. You can't keep throwing away designer stuff you buy from expensive shops abroad. (but SS' white pants dont look to be designer😃)I love shopping in the US, anything I buy from here is usually too common. Otherwise, I often repeat my favorite clothes, which I wear to private functions.

I give away clothes that I can't wear again to members of my family. Every six months I also give away a lot of my clothes to a church I'm associated with. Sometimes, but very rarely, if you're friends with another actress, you end up exchanging clothes too.

SUSHMA REDDY

I cannot repeat any outfit once I've made a public appearance in it, and that's one of the most traumatic aspects of being a star. So, clothes keep piling up. At most sometimes I think of different ways of mixing and matching them or modifying them with accessories. Otherwise, once I've worn a dress, I just store it or wear it only when I go out with friends. Or, worse, after a while I just trash it. It's such an expensive affair. My major worry right now is that I've to get five outfits ready for the promotions of Chup Chup Ke which will begin soon. Sometimes, the problem is that I genuinely can't remember which outfit I've worn in public before!

In Hollywood, stars have their own stylists, so they're better off. They wear outfits made by their stylists and return it to them later. It would make life so much easier if we had personal stylists here.

I cannot give these outfits to my friends either as they cannot be worn in public by them too. So it's just a huge waste.

TUSSHAR KAPOOR

There is a huge pressure for both men and women to wear new outfits all the time. I do repeat my clothes on and off, perhaps not the next day or week,(yes, that's what ss does..repeats her white pants ewerytime😛) but some time later, occasionally. You can use them a few months later. 😛 I don't throw away too many clothes. I keep them as long as they're not outdated. I'm not much of a shopper so it hasn't been too much of a burden on me! If I don't plan to wear any outfit ever again, I give it away to the needy.

ARYAN VAID

I'm not a huge star, so I'm sure no one really cares whether I repeat an outfit or not. I think women find it much more difficult, as they remember outfits all the time. It's just the way they're made. I think Shah Rukh was really cool. When he entered the industry, he used to only wear denim jeans and a denim shirt. Now, that's called being yourself!

AYESHA TAKIA

Recently I saw two pictures of a top actress in the newspapers, where they booed her because she wore the same skirt at two different functions. Well, what does the media expect from us? Isn't it normal to repeat clothes, it's such a waste of money not to do so. Besides that, what if you really like a skirt or an outfit? Why can't you wear it again? I repeat my clothes all the time, except the ones that I wear to a really big affair, like my own film release or an awards function. For everyday use, I wear my favorite pairs of jeans and shoes hundreds of times.

I have only 20 pairs of shoes, so obviously I need to repeat them. I can never discard my designer dresses.

YANA GUPTA

It's really quite a problem because you end up spending so much money on clothes and they just lie there gathering dust after you've worn them once. I have a cupboard full of expensive dresses that I cannot wear again.

I think someone should start a boutique where all our outfits are put up for sale. We don't need the money, it could go to charity. Sometimes, I send my outfits to my sister who lives abroad. Sometimes I give them to my friends. Normally, I never overspend on clothes because I know I won't be able to wear them over and over again. I clear out my cupboard once in three months.
