Indi,

"star plus only cares about money"
Do you know about US show "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" show which earlier aired on Fox, and when that channel cancelled it in mid 2018, another channel NBC picked it up owing to its huge craze in youth and on internet, even though it was low on TRP (It's a lovely comedy series). The show got renewed within days by another channel and till date the cast and the crew says that it is the love of the fans for their show that it got saved and renewed. This immediately brought me memory to our very own IPKKND and the crazy things we fans did way back in 2012!
Yes, I do know that "Star Plus" is a commercial channel, thinking only about money. But why can't they just understand the love the show has and respect it? If they did good hard work on the script with such a stellar cast, wouldn't it be beneficial to them at the end? May be it is too much to ask from an Indian Hindi Soap Opera TV Channel. Let's leave it at it.

"in september 2011, four months after starting, ipk breached the high trp numbers of colors' balika badhu"
So it was in September'11 it topped the charts? I knew the show was one among the top rated shows (who could forget the frantic forum waiting for every Friday to check with TRP and also ranking in the forum, as though we were waiting for our own report cards for our exams! 😆), but I didn't know that it crossed Balika Vadhu.
So September'11 it was, the episodes where slowly the dynamics between every character was changing, some pace in the show also with respect to Shashi and Garima also shifting to Delhi, the first time "Sorry, I'm really sorry" from ASR!
But with the changing dynamics, one could also clearly see the channel interference like you said.
In October we see Khushi slowly falling for ASR, Shashi's increasing doubt on Shyam, Payal-Akash's budding love story, all handled pretty well. And in Novemer'11 we have the beautful Diwali and another dynamic change in the story, again handled decently, but towards the end of November, when we were in the middle of this "punishment" by ASR to Khushi to arrange his engagement because she declares "humein koyi farakh nahi padtha!" we suddenly go to Payal-Akash's wedding out of blue, when in reality, it was too soon for both the characters to take such a big step. May be the channel was getting antsy, wanted the wedding to take place and wanted Arnav-Khushi to fall for each other with this wedding background, because "Indian TV pe aisa hi hona chanhiye" maybe! 😕
Then we go through the heartbreak, and the wrecking has already begun to the show!

"alongside, gul was beginning to lose interest, new show qubool hai on the cards, with her favourite karan singh grover"
Sure Gul created the basic concept of the show, a "star-crossed" "Mills&Boons" type love-story, but I don't understand why she is given any credit beyond that point. To me it was the initial writers Ved Raj, Sudhir Kumar, screenplay from Gautam Hegde and the other creative team who should be given a bigger credit in beautifully crafting these amazing and real characters and making the epic initial episodes which we never saw in any Indian TV soap.
I always feel IPKKND was completely apart from the quintessential Indian soap TV we were hearing about till that date, I always felt that IPKKND was way ahead of its time and was in wrong place (Channel) to begin with. We never see the lead of any other Indian show saying "Aaj tumhare liye ye office hai, lekin kal se narak hoga, Welcome to hell Ms. Khushi Kumari Gupta" or leads staying strong with their beliefs, challenging each other at every turn and yet madly falling for each other and feeling that magnetic physical attraction towards each other all the while.
Coming back to the point, why was Gul so obsessed with Karan Singh Grover? She didn't work with him before Qubool Hai. Let's leave it at there.
During Dec'11 and Jan'12, the show was gaining huge momentum in TV and also making money, may be that is when she thought to move to another concept! She obsessively started Qubool Hai (writing, producing, and also directing), pitched to many channels, but finally closed it with Zee, while all this happened the show, IPKKND which was something completely different from other Hindi daily soaps was made into another quintessential daily soap with the horrific entry of Daadi, unnecessary re-marriage TRP pulling drama, and finally Sheetal.
We, as fans were all supposed to leave it at there, but the magic the show had on us was so intense that jaisa bhi show hai hamari show hai and can't let it go to grounds. We were so determined that Gul also gave up (also because of her increasing involvement with her favourite Qubool Hai and can't take the fuss from fans of IPKKND anymore) at the end.
But I must say it is a MIRACLE that we at least had that kind of abrupt ending to the show without further damage because look at her track record for other shows! I don't have to talk much on that! So yeah, it is a huge MIRACLE that it at least happened this way!

P.S.: I'm gonna step out for a while now, I will be back and continue with further rants, please bear with me!

"he did, but he also wanted to do other things, who wouldn't"
Was he getting irritated with the script changes and stupid tracks by the end of April'12? Nothing wrong with him opting to take a break for a movie. It was around that time that many TV actors were picked up for movies by Bollywood, I think Sushant Singh Rajput also got into movies with a big banner which made a huge news back in the day.
Had Star Plus and 4 Lions handled it well for Barun, it would have been much easier for him also, but things got really complicated with IPKKND, I feel.
I feel Barun has been pushed over with others decisions during this time.
It was highly risky to do those many shifts for both film and the show, instead of quitting like other contemporary TV actors at that time (which was fairly normal, it's just a TV show after all) he continued with the show (may be for his love for the show, or friends he got with the show, or the kind of work he got to do with ASR, or may be because he also started making decent money, whatever the reason may be, he stayed), which is highly commendable on his part. But was all that hard work worth it at the end? Let's discuss that later.
But the show and the crew were never the same after Barun's break for movie.
Akshay was growing impatient with how Akash is being handled by the writers (he should rightly be so!đŸ„±), Sanaya got under pressure during Barun's break, Abhaas took/was given a break after Shyam's revelation instead of including him in the show passively. Daljeet was also unsatisfied from the change in the direction of show from Didi Ka Saut (which she was pitched initially like you said) to just Arnav & Khushi after Channel's excessive interference during the end of 2011. Rajesh Jais (Mamaji) left the show mid-way without proper closure. Shashi never getting treated!
A lot, lot of changes happened in May - July of 2012. The show never remained the same after this whole fiasco. The show went an ordinary daily soap route, unsatisfactory to almost everyone, both the fans and the cast. The only people who were happy was the Channel making some money out of some silly and some sweet rabba vey!

"then kicked barun... he was the most expendable after us"
Let's go back in time a bit.
Barun was not a big name when IPKKND happened to him.
Sanaya was already big or upcoming big name in the industry with two successful seasons of a youth based show on Star One, with a strong presence on the internet as well much before social networking was a norm. Sanaya and Mohit as a pair were already being loved by the audience.
Sanaya was in a way senior to Barun, both in age and in experience with the industry. I also heard that it was first Sanaya finalised for the show and they had to take a lot of auditions for the male lead to get the perfect pairing and some time later Barun got it.
Barun was just two shows old (another being a small role) by the time IPKKND happened and was not even an upcoming big name. So, may be he didn't have much experience with how the TV industry worked.
So yeah, Barun was never expected to get this huge craze, never expected by anyone in their wildest dreams including himself. I think he just came to the industry with simple goals: get better financial standards; do some good work; lead a smooth, easy and happy life with his family. But this sudden craze and unprecedented love he got from fans could not be handled well by the Channel and the production house.
I sometimes think were they jealous of his popularity and love from fans? So jealous that they effectively sabotaged his career for a while? We may never know!
But one thing was clear to me in this whole fiasco, he was pushed over by Channel and production house too many times for their own benefit. That is why may be he couldn't take it anymore and decided to step down to get out of the mess!

"oh that ticker tape blaming one actor for the end of a show"
That scroll so got me to my nerves Indi, that I just hated Star Plus for doing this with him, and never really back at them for a long long time. (I also remember telling my Mom I'm not gonna watch TV anymore after the show ended, but only to break it after a while when the gussa cooled down a bit! 😆)
Like I told you earlier about a recent interview of Barun, this scroll got even Barun on his nerves when he heard he was being blamed (later calmed by his wife he later said!😆).
He puzzled me to the core when he let bygones be bygones and came back to Star Plus with the same production house! I was like what's wrong with him? 😡 Why did he trust them again only to be let down by them again?
May be he's a person who wouldn't hold grudge for long and move on!

On a side note, was his interview with Gul towards the end of the show was believable? May be he was being honest in that interview but there were so many things happening when it came out that I didn't know what or whom to believe! (I was just a teenager back then in love with a beautiful show! 😳)

"though they always tried to act cool, a bit nonchalant, i think they did"
I'm sure they did, yes they became friends for life after the show, some of them even living in the same building like Barun said in his interview on the last day shoot for the show!
But I wondered if they ever loved the show how fans like us loved it? From the position of a viewer instead of being the crew of the show. May be or may be not!
But yes, all of them felt helpless towards the end of the show, everyone! The whole cast and crew became like a family to me by the end of those 18 months, and that's why it's so heartwarming to me when I come across any of their group photographs!
Indi, I don't have much friends, I am a really very private person, always putting my thoughts to myself not sharing with others much, that is why whenever I come across their photographs, I always wonder, can friendships be really that strong? Can relationships be really that strong? May be! I don't know it for myself!

All these years reminiscing the show once in a while, coming to IF at free times to read some fan fictions, I never opened up this much in any thread of IF or with anyone else outside internet!
I am writing so much because of you and only your writings. You did not come across to me a single time as an unreasonable or high on feelings fan of the show. I know I am repeating myself but I can't help it. You were always balanced in your views and so many of my thoughts matched yours.
I don't wanna sound creepy, but I felt I finally got someone who shared similar thinking of mine to ramble all the things I had in my mind these many years without being shared with anyone. I'm kinda like getting it all out of my system finally! Thank you so much for doing on this forum whatever you were doing till date! Thank you.

" i just don't like to fight over him. ... i don't wish to have unnecessarily combative arguments over him."

You don't have to! I don't want to discuss about Barun to fight over or for him, but I want to discuss about Barun because I just want to talk to someone who is as much of a fan myself and shared my thinking. I just want talk out my feelings to a friend, if it is OK with you! 😳

By your profile pic on the forum, I'm guessing you might have loved the episode where they throw tea and coffee at each other and he grabs her by her neck to get to her!

No, I do not know all the sequences by heart or something like that, but I put Hotstar on a tab for references.
But as you can see from my posts I'm madly in love with the show and the characters. You could say that my pagalpan has reached heights as I'm writing the analysis of the show like a thesis paper for graduation! 😆

Oh kizh72, that's a great point! đŸ€Ł

But yeah on a side note Mamaji was also worried about the "ulti reethi shuru hora hai" in the house, where he was running away from his wife, but his bhanja running behind his wife! 😆 Same but still different these Mama and Bhanja are! 😆

yup, that nokjhok is trademark... too sweet and calm a relationship, and it just becomes someone else's story. also once in a way some real solid i hate you fights... their fights were oddly stirring. at least for me. they seemed to enter each other's heart and gut and consciousness even more with every fight. from the second episode's khushi's "badtameezi ki bhi had hoti hai..." and peremptory "hat jaiye hamare raaste se... hume jaane dijiye!" to his seething "badtamezi toh maine abhi shuru bhi nahin ki."

to the guest house and "aapki personal life personal life hai..." fury...

to the post marriage "i hate you" and "hum bhi aap se nafrat karte hain."

to the fight on the terrace and the bridge... and the battle of 295 where he is so damn hurtful, "haan, hua hai! yeh sab tumhari vajah se hua hai! jab se tum aai ho tabse... tum meri zindagi mein ayi hi kyun? main tumse mila hi kyun..."

to the "khushi, yeh sab hone dogi tum?" fight of 310...

and then that 318's "that i love you dammit!"

they are all so good. so specifically asr and khushi and so real (310 made me drag my husband to see it 😃).

honestly, even as i am typing, my diaphragm is in a state, my stomach is doing somersaults.

to me, their fights defined their cleaving to each other. they captured the furious attraction, its wild energy, its need to rush, to crash against each other without thinking without curbing without control. it was always an intense, cataclysmic, not too well understood but viscerally essential attraction. the sweetness, the light, the nok jhok balanced this intensity, added nuance, allowed breathing space in a "saansey ruk jaaygi" feeling.

and passage of time or not, i believe that thing could flare up any minute, sometimes even for the silliest of reasons. somewhere they need those fights as much as i want them i think 😆.

oh i totally love the tea/coffee throwing ceremonies 😃 and gosh, that man telling the batty girl, she has a "huq" over him... angrily, sexily, sweetly... how did i even breathe those days.
